Chapter 588: Oddler Soldier - Reiju
Even though the situation was utterly unacceptable to her, after Sanji's repeated confirmation and persistent urging, Reiju finally relented. With a sullen expression, she reluctantly dragged herself out of bed and began changing clothes.
Sanji had excused himself long before she got up, and was now leaning against the wall outside her door. He took a long drag from his cigarette, his face betraying unmistakable impatience as he waited.
Inside the room, Reiju still couldn't process the fact that she had somehow become a Marine servant overnight. While lazily sorting through her clothes, she called out to Sanji through the door:
"Are you absolutely certain about this? I only arrived yesterday as a guest. I never agreed to join the Marines."
Sanji remained unmoved by her protests. Glancing at his watch, he continued his relentless pressure:
"Stop talking nonsense. It's 7:03 now. If you haven't reported to your assigned workplace with me by 7:20, you can forget about having breakfast or lunch today."
Reiju had just finished changing into a simple white t-shirt and trousers. Upon hearing his threat, she marched out of her room in obvious displeasure.
Seeing that his words had finally motivated her to action, Sanji merely gave her a cursory glance before turning to lead the way through the ship's complex corridors.
"This way," he said flatly, already walking ahead.
Reiju gritted her teeth and quickly hurried after him, unable to contain her frustration any longer.
"Hey, you're really taking this Marine act too far! Tell me what's actually going on here!" she demanded, struggling to keep pace with him. "After all, I'm Luffy's fiancée. Shouldn't I be lounging in bed all day enjoying the service of subordinates? Answer me, you bastard! What's the meaning of this?"
Sanji turned to look at his sister with a puzzled expression. The irritable, impatient woman before him displayed none of the grace and elegance that had always defined Princess Reiju of Germa Kingdom.
"Is this woman really my sister?" he wondered silently. "Could Judge have somehow switched her with an impostor before we left?"
Reiju met his suspicious gaze with a fierce glare, challenging him to voice his thoughts.
Taking another contemplative drag from his cigarette, Sanji temporarily set aside his doubts and began to explain the situation.
"It's quite simple. Our ship doesn't operate on principles of leisure and privilege," he stated matter-of-factly. "No matter how close your relationship with Luffy may be, everyone on board contributes according to their abilities. This rule applies to you just as it does to Luffy's other women."
"For example?" Reiju asked skeptically, her lips forming a disbelieving pout.
"For instance, take Princess Vivi. She's also royalty and has been engaged to Luffy for quite some time now," Sanji explained patiently. "Currently, she's training under Rear Admiral Ain and assists with various logistics management tasks."
The image of a blue-haired girl flashed through Reiju's mind. Learning that another princess—one who had also secured an engagement with Luffy—was required to work according to these same rules made her feel somewhat better about her situation. At least she wasn't being singled out for unfair treatment.
"Fine," Reiju conceded with a sigh. "So what exactly will I be doing? My father may have been strict, but he did grant me considerable authority in Germa for various reasons. I typically managed portions of the kingdom's administration. If you need me to handle bookkeeping or inventory, I should have no problems with that."
Reiju seemed to relax slightly, assuming her duties would align with her administrative experience. This misapprehension made Sanji laugh outright.
"I'm afraid you've misunderstood," he said, unable to suppress his amusement. "Those responsibilities have already been assigned to others. You've been specifically placed under my command, and I happen to be the head chef of this vessel. So whatever administrative skills you possess are, unfortunately, irrelevant to your current position."
Reiju froze in her tracks, her expression darkening dangerously.
By this point, she was nearly ready to commit murder. If she had been asked to handle clerical work, she might have grudgingly endured it. But Sanji was actually suggesting she should follow him and work as a cook!
Throughout her years as a Germa princess, she had expertly assassinated countless individuals—but she had never once cooked a meal! The very idea that a princess of her stature would be expected to prepare food was outrageous!
Sanji sensed the murderous aura intensifying behind him but showed no surprise. He suddenly stopped walking and slowly turned to face her.
"'The royal family cannot serve others.' You still remember that philosophy, don't you?" he asked quietly.
Sanji's unexpected words caused Reiju to halt her rising anger immediately.
Of course she remembered those words. This was the core principle their father, Judge, had instilled in them since childhood. When Sanji was young, he had been severely reprimanded by Judge for sharing food he'd cooked with a small mouse that had wandered into the castle. From that point forward, the other Vinsmoke brothers had begun tormenting Sanji relentlessly.
While Reiju was lost in these uncomfortable memories, Sanji had already turned around and resumed walking. As he moved away, his parting words reached her clearly:
"I don't know what twisted values he's implanted in you over the years," Sanji said, his voice carrying a rare edge of emotion. "I only know that on this ship, there are only brothers and sisters. No royalty, no maids, and no servants."
The words hung in the air between them, challenging everything Reiju had been raised to believe about her place in the world.
