Chapter 42: Ambushing the Roger Pirates
CP0 through CP9, even the Marines knew very little about these secret organizations directly under the World Government.
They were comprised of high-level government agents specializing in espionage, massacres, assassinations, and other unsavory tasks.
Regarding Vegapunk's research proposal, it was decided that the monsters created from Cahill's body would first deal with Roger, while Alucard would be handled by the World Government.
The Marines or the World Government interacting with a pirate hunter wasn't something to boast about, so the task was given to CP7, a group of agents specializing in covert operations.
Considering Alucard's ability to defeat pirates with bounties exceeding 200 million Berries, a considerable force was dispatched. However, with the World Government's name backing them, they assumed a mere pirate hunter wouldn't dare cause much trouble.
Almost all World Government employees wore suits as their uniforms, and many were proficient in the Rokushiki. Of course, those were the elite; most assassination and killing operations were resolved with manpower, cannons, and guns.
According to Marine investigations, Alucard was an unpredictable anomaly, especially concerning his sea routes. He often forcefully broke through Log Poses, veering into different navigation channels, making it incredibly difficult to predict his course.
Fortunately, the World Government never lacked talent. Through calculations and predictions, they confirmed Alucard was scheduled to land on an island called Asmodeus.
The commanding officer of CP7, Omar Bradley, was tasked with meeting Alucard and "inviting" him to Mariejois.
Given the danger of meeting someone like Alucard, the World Government naturally wouldn't send a bunch of incompetent agents.
Bradley and his subordinates were all considered skilled operatives. More importantly, Asmodeus, where Alucard was set to land, was extremely close to Marine Headquarters and the World Government.
If he had any sense of being a pirate hunter, he wouldn't dare stir up trouble with the Marines or the World Government in such a location.
As Bradley led over three hundred black-suited World Government employees to Asmodeus, Garp, along with his main forces, Kuzan and Sakazuki, and a colossal warship, landed at Long Ring Long Land.
Here, propelled by the Marines, the Blacklight-infected creatures, contained within glass enclosures and created from Cahill's body, were unveiled before everyone. Aside from the infected birds, which still somewhat resembled birds, it was impossible to tell what the other creatures originally were.
They were currently in a sedated state due to Vegapunk's specialized tranquilizer. However, through Vegapunk's extensive research, the effects and duration of the anesthetic had been perfectly predicted; the moment the Roger Pirates landed on Long Ring Long Land, these creatures would awaken.
"The scientific research unit has cooked up another batch of bizarre things," Garp grumbled, displeased. These grotesque creatures gave him an unsettling feeling, though they were no match for him.
"According to intelligence, conceal these creatures in the forest to the east; the Roger Pirates will berth there," Vegapunk had already laid out the ambush plan for Roger's crew. More accurately, he simply wanted to acquire valuable data about these monsters. In other words, he didn't care about the Marines or pirates; he was a mad scientist solely focused on his research findings.
The specialized glass containers holding the Blacklight-infected creatures were remotely controlled by a special device Vegapunk had developed.
Hours later, the voice of a scout crackled through a Den Den Mushi: "Pirate flag sighted! Pirate flag sighted! It's the Roger Pirates! The Roger Pirates!"
"Excellent. You are to withdraw from that position immediately!" Garp quickly ordered. Vegapunk, seizing the moment, pressed the button on his remote.
The special glass containers hidden in the coastal jungle opened. About five minutes later, these grotesque beasts began to awaken and crawl out of their containers, just in time to see the Roger Pirates mooring their ship and disembarking.
"Woohoo! This is amazing!" Red-Haired Shanks, still just a kid at this point, stretched excitedly after disembarking. "Only two more islands until Sabaody Archipelago, then Fish-Man Island and the New World, right? I can't wait!"
"Don't get too excited, Shanks... Look out!"
Rayleigh, who had been smiling and chatting with Shanks, suddenly drew his sword and blocked Shanks, swiftly slashing a half-man-sized bird-beast in two!
"What is this thing?" Shanks and the others stared at the monster Rayleigh had killed. It had wings, so it should have been a bird, but its appearance was terrifying, like a reanimated, crimson bird corpse.
"Everyone, prepare for battle! Enemies incoming," Captain Gold Roger announced. Everyone looked towards the opposite forest and saw a horde of crimson-bodied monsters rapidly approaching, their numbers exceeding that of the Roger Pirates.
