Chapter 108: One Piece: A Side Story – The Forgotten Isle (Part 109)
The darkness enveloped the crew completely, swallowing them whole as the last of the floating islands disappeared from sight. For a moment, there was no sound, no light—only an oppressive void. The familiar hum of the island's energy had gone silent, leaving them in the unnerving stillness.
Then, without warning, a sharp crack of light split the void, and the crew was thrust into a new reality.
They stood on the edge of a vast ocean, an endless expanse of water stretching as far as the eye could see. The sky was an unfamiliar shade of deep violet, swirling with clouds that glowed faintly in the darkness. The air felt thick, heavy with an almost tangible pressure, as though the world itself was holding its breath.
"What is this place?" Nami asked, her voice trembling slightly as she looked around. "This… doesn't look like anything we've seen before."
Zoro's hand was already resting on the hilt of his sword, his posture tense. "We've been through some strange stuff before, but this is on another level."
Luffy took a deep breath, his grin still wide. "Well, whatever it is, we'll deal with it. Let's keep moving!"
Before anyone could react, a low, echoing voice reverberated through the air, as though the very ocean itself were speaking.
"You have entered the domain of time itself," the voice intoned, deep and resonant. "Here, the past and future converge. Here, you will face the test of understanding the Heart—and the consequences of your actions."
The crew turned in unison, eyes scanning for the source of the voice. There was no figure in sight, only the vast ocean and the swirling sky. But the voice seemed to come from everywhere at once, pressing in on them from all directions.
"Test?" Robin repeated, her eyes narrowing as she analyzed the situation. "What test?"
Suddenly, a massive wave rose in the distance, taller than any they had seen before. It didn't crash or break; instead, it froze in mid-air, hanging impossibly above them like a living creature, its surface shimmering with the strange, violet light that filled the sky.
"The Heart is not merely a source of power," the voice continued. "It is a vessel for the memories of time—memories of what was, and what could be. Those who awaken it must face the consequences of tampering with the flow of time."
The wave rippled, and within its surface, distorted images began to form—visions of battles, lost civilizations, and long-forgotten histories. Each vision flickered by too quickly for the crew to fully comprehend, but the images felt strangely familiar—like echoes of their own past adventures.
"Those are…" Sanji started, squinting at the visions. "Are those our past battles? Our journeys?"
"Yes," the voice answered, its tone distant but clear. "The Heart contains all that has been—your victories, your losses, your choices. But it also holds the future, the consequences of what your actions will bring. The question is not what has happened, but what will happen. Can you change the course of history, or will you be swept away by the currents of fate?"
Suddenly, the image of a towering figure appeared in the wave—a silhouette of a man standing alone on a battlefield, his back turned to them. The figure's features were obscured, but his presence felt overwhelming. He raised his hand, and in an instant, the world around the crew shifted, and they found themselves in a new scene.
They were standing in the middle of a fiery battlefield. The air was thick with smoke, and the ground beneath them cracked and burned. Figures moved through the haze—soldiers, pirates, and strange, mythical creatures that they couldn't quite recognize.
A massive shadow loomed above them, casting a terrifying silhouette against the burning sky. It was a colossal beast, a creature of pure destruction, with eyes that glowed like molten fire. Its roar shook the earth, sending ripples through the flames.
"This… this is an old battle," Zoro murmured, his hand tightening around his sword. "But why are we seeing it now?"
The voice echoed again, as if answering his question. "This is a moment from the past—a battle that shaped the island. It is a memory of destruction, of choices that led to the creation of the Heart. But the future is still unwritten."
The scene around them shifted again, the fiery battlefield replaced by a vision of an unknown city—towering structures made of stone and light, with people walking the streets, oblivious to the storm brewing on the horizon. The vision was peaceful, serene even, but there was an undercurrent of dread in the air. The crew could feel it, as if something terrible was about to happen.
"This is the future," Robin said, her voice steady but filled with concern. "A future that hasn't happened yet, but will if we don't act."
The scene faded, and once again, they stood at the edge of the ocean, facing the enormous wave of light that loomed before them.
"Now you understand," the voice said. "The Heart holds the potential to shape both the past and the future. Your actions have already altered the course of time, but you have not yet faced the final consequence."
Luffy stepped forward, his fists clenched. "We're not going to let things go the way they did before. We'll make our own future, no matter what."
The voice remained silent for a long moment, as if considering Luffy's words. Then, it spoke again.
"Very well. If you are determined to shape the future, then you must first understand the truth of the Heart. You will face your past, your future, and the choices that will determine the island's fate."
The massive wave suddenly collapsed, sending a shockwave through the air. The crew was thrown back, but they quickly regained their footing, ready for whatever came next.
Before them stood the Keeper of Time—the same figure they had seen in the rift, its mask glowing with an ethereal light. It extended its hand toward them, and the air around it shimmered.
"Only by understanding the flow of time can you hope to stop the cycle. Only by confronting the choices you've made can you hope to break free from the consequences."
With a final, sweeping motion, the Keeper raised its hand, and the world around them began to warp once again. The crew found themselves on the edge of a cliff, looking out over a vast, sprawling city in the distance—a city they did not recognize, but one that somehow felt connected to them.
"This is where it all ends," the voice said. "The Heart will reveal its final truth. Will you embrace your destiny, or will you defy the forces of time?"
To be continued…
