Novaris: Adventure in the Shattered Fang Continent

Chapter 45 - Progress Part 2

Novaris. Quattur. 905. AGC.

Nodel. Waxing Gibbous 🌔. Day 14.

The next day was followed by learning even more spells.

Basic Light: A basic spell capable of creating a floating moat of light. The light's appearance can be changed based on the user’s will. The light spell is considered to be a rather harmless spell and is taught to many around the world. However, with the right knowledge and skill, its hybrid capability can become quite a powerful creation, even at the lowest rank of power.

Current Rank: D.

Magic Type: Simple Magic - Conjuration, Evocation.

Concentration: No.

Mana Use: Hybrid.

Use: Utility.

AoE: No.

Multi-Target: Yes.

As its name and description implied, it was used to create a light. However, seeing the hybrid mana use and the clear implication in its description, Tesilim decided to question Alyx about a couple of things that had been bugging him.

The first was the little stars he had seen next to simple magic in his spell descriptions.

Alyx replied that magic was very finicky, and though they tried to separate it into different aspects, a lot of it was related, like a very complex family tree. However, getting to the core of things, Alyx explained that in this world, they separated magic into four different types.

Simple magic encompassed most of it, including things like evocation, restoration, enhancement, and many others. From there, they had the crafting magics, which were alchemy, enchanting and ritual magic. Then there was mind magic, which involved illusion, telekinesis, telepathy, and domination. Finally, there were the advanced magics of soul, time, space, and gravity.

All of these magics pretty much rounded up all magic types for the most part, but it wasn’t that simple.

Alyx explained that a lot of spell effects could be created by other types of magics which was why they were all so related. He gave an example of a fireball spell. A spellcaster could launch an explosive fireball using simple magic through evocation. However, someone more skilled and well-versed in evocation and the slightly harder mind magic could make an illusion of a fireball and throw it at an enemy. The illusion could seem as real as the actual thing, but the caster could choose to transform the illusion into a real fireball or have it dispersed harmlessly or anything in between.

The gnome also explained that, technically, the caster was switching from illusion to evocation, but those particular arguments were the reason why magic schools were a thing. From what Tesilim understood, arguing about random stuff also existed in this world, and some people were willing to argue for hours about the tiny details, just like on Earth. An excellent example for Earth was arguing that pancakes and waffles were the same thing. Technically they were, but Tesilim would be damned if he ever actually admitted that to those waffle-loving bastards.

Moving back to the topic of magic, Alyx next spoke about the whole hybrid thing with the light spell. Basically, you could create a floating orb with a limited amount of mana that would eventually run out, as well as a floating orb that you constantly fed mana to, and finally, an orb that would sustain itself from the ambient mana.

If you used a light orb with a limited life and it died while you were exploring a deep dark cave and the light gave out at the wrong time, you were screwed. On the other hand, constantly feeding the orb mana might drain your mana if you weren’t careful, and depending on the complexity of the light, it might actually require concentration, putting the caster at more of a disadvantage. Then, finally, was the self-sustaining type, whose only issue was the fact that a big magical discharge could disrupt it.

After explaining that, Alyx continued that the reason why the light spell could be useful was the fact that it could also be used as a battery of sorts. A caster could channel mana into it and actually make it so the spell barely spent any on the actual light itself, and instead, it would grow in size as more mana was put into it. However, doing such a tactic would also change the spell to a concentration spell, as the caster had to ensure the spell wasn’t dispersed, unleashing all the mana within, which could cause a mana explosion.

It was this same explosion that could be used to turn the basic spell into an actual damaging spell. To do so, a caster would need to be skilled enough to hide their connection to the spell from others and fill it with mana while turning it invisible. Once that was done, the caster could move the floating bomb into the enemy's range and change the magic from simple light conjuration to a proper damaging spell. However, to actually make it all work, the caster needed to be really, really good, and there was also the issue that the tactic would only actually damage or be viable against C Rankers or lower.

Understanding the explanation, Tesilim knew he was far from being that capable and moved on from that particular spell to continue learning another useful spell that would actually keep him alive.

Basic Cleanse: A basic cleansing spell capable of cleansing small amounts of weak poisons or necrosis. Cleansing magic has a wide variety of applications and is a basic spell taught to any aspiring clergy. The spell can remove negative effects equal to the spell's power. This spell works best when the correct chants are used to empower it against whatever it is trying to cleanse.

Current Rank: D.

Magic Type: Simple Magic*- Cleanse.

Concentration: No.

Mana Use: One-Off.

Use: Cleansing.

AoE: No.

Multi-Target: Yes.

Even if it wasn’t super strong, the spell could be helpful especially if he fought lots of poison or toxic things in the island’s jungle and swamp.

After the cleansing spell came his two favorite spells, which he had been dying to learn since he began his magical journey.

Identify Item: A spell that attempts to scan and identify as much information about an item as possible and insert it directly into the caster's mind. This information is gathered through a variety of means, all of which involve the World Crystal in one way or another.

Current Rank: D.

Magic Type: Simple Magic - Clairvoyance.

Concentration: No.

Mana Use: One-Off.

Use: Reconnaissance.

AoE: No.

Multi-Target: No.

Identify Creature: A spell that attempts to scan and identify as much information about a creature and insert it directly into the caster's mind. This information is gathered through the use of the caster's presence abilities and can be deflected using the targeted creature’s own presence. This spell does not require incantation and completely relies on the caster's presence, abilities, and rank.

Current Rank: D.

Magic Type: Simple Magic - Presence.

Concentration: No.

Mana Use: One-Off.

Use: Reconnaissance.

AoE: No.

Multi-Target: Yes.

Naturally, as soon as he got them, he began using them on all his crap, starting with the pouch Alyx had given him.

“With magic's touch, let truth unfold;

Illuminate the unseen, bright and bold;

By word and sign, let all be clear;

World Crystal, show what's hidden here."

And with a jingle, a screen popped.

🔷 Crystal Notice 🔷

Pouch of Holding - Item Rank: Uncommon - A small pouch containing an even smaller spatial fold capable of holding around 500g or something equivalent in size to that amount of gold.

🔷

“Sweet!” Tesilim had yelled before moving to identify his two dice.

🔷 Crystal Notice 🔷

Dice of Chaotic Weaponry - Item Rank: Divine Artifact - A yellow six-sided die created by the Gods of Magic, Knowledge, and Chaos for Tesilim Telsy. The dice can be rolled and, depending on the result, will equip Tesilim with different magical weaponry. The weapons will automatically be equipped by Tesilim regardless of where the die is rolled or Tesilim’s location. Once equipped, the weapons can be set aside. However, once equipped Tesilim gains moderate skill with the equipped weapon.

Notice—once rolled, the dice will stay in their new weapon form for 1 Minute, 1 Hour, 12 Hours, and 1 Day, chosen at random.

Additionally, each transformation will have magical abilities of its own. When not in use, the die will innately absorb mana and store it within its own Soul, which is equal in strength to Tesilim’s. Finally, this item will gain more options as Tesilim Ranks Up. Tesilim is always aware of the die’s location.

Weapon Transformations Available.

1 - Pair of Daggers.

2 - Boxing Gloves.

3 - Ray Gun.

4 - Boots.

5 - Katana.

6 - Shield.

🔷 Crystal Notice 🔷

Dice of Chaotic Spells - Item Rank: Divine Artifact - A purple six-sided die created by the Gods of Magic, Knowledge, and Chaos for Tesilim Telsy. Each of the die’s six sides can be assigned a One-Off spell that Tesilim knows. For the die to work all six sides of the die must be assigned. However, once assigned, Tesilim can roll the die, whose result will trigger the spell assigned to the side rolled. The spell will have Tesilim’s full mana pool and act as if Tesilim himself had cast it. The die has its own Soul equal to Tesilim’s in strength and, when not in use, will absorb mana and store it within.

Notice—once rolled, the die will not function for 24 Hours.

Finally, Tesilim is always aware of the die’s location.

🔷

Tesilim’s grin could probably be seen from across the world.

He was incredibly excited that he had two divine artifacts, and they were both freaking amazing, and he instantly rolled the d6 and got a 1. Two daggers appeared in his hands. And, of course, he identified them.

🔷 Crystal Notice 🔷

Pair of Daggers - Item Rank: Rare - A pair of stylish steel daggers enchanted with sharpness, self-repair, and sturdiness. The daggers have the following abilities: Return. Teleport.

Return: When thrown Tesilim can spend the item’s mana to return the daggers back to his hand. The greater the distance, the greater the mana spent.

Teleport: When holding one dagger, Tesilim can activate its magic to teleport to the location of the other dagger. The greater the distance, the greater the mana spent.

🔷

“Holy Shit! I am gonna be a teleporting ninja! This is fucking awesome!” Tesilim screamed before throwing a dagger across Lili’s shop and instantly teleporting to it.

“What the hell do you think you are doing!?” Lili screamed at him before appearing next to him and smacking him so hard he hit the ground face-first.

“Don’t play with your toys in my shop! You could have broken something!”

Tesilim, rubbing his head, groaned as he responded with a “Yes, Mom,” which earned him another kick.

Alyx didn’t help as he snickered, watching the two before returning to his book.

Honestly, the rest of the day was spent with Tesilim playing with his magical daggers out in a park. However, he had asked to try and identify Lili and Alyx to see what would happen. Alyx straight-up denied him, and Lili agreed because she was curious about what would happen.

🔷 Crystal Notice 🔷

Notice—Spell: Identify Creature has failed. The chosen target is a rank above the caster, and their soul’s inherent strength has rebuffed your attempt.

🔷

Well, it wasn’t what Tesilim had been hoping for, but he would just have to wait.

From there on, he did train a bit with Lili using his teleporting daggers, but overall nothing else much happened. And, of course, like always, Tesilim was worried about tomorrow and what his chaotic event would bring. However, unlike before, he actually managed to sleep the night before. It was getting to the point that Tesilim’s philosophy of “If you can’t change it, don’t worry about it” was kicking in, and he was just starting to adjust to the chaos thing.

If anything, he should look into it and see if he could control it somehow, even if just a bit.
