Chapter 6: Chapter 6: Army of Undead
In the next corridor, there was yet another single [Whimrat].
[Whimrats] are very aggressive creatures; however, they tend to ignore anything and everything, including smell and hearing. However, when they see a creature different from themselves, they attack it right away.
They are big for a rat—faster and sharper than mutants—and have a weird face that is different from anything on Earth.
Its long tail was thin but heavy. A strike from that would break the ribs of any human.
As two undead walked to the [Whimrat], the [Whimrat] froze suddenly and stared at them.
One [Whimrat] undead was filled with scratch marks which were filled with blood clots. It had a massive gash in its neck that made it look terrifying.
The next one was in a similar state. Its chest was sunken, there were tears all over its body, and bite marks had torn large pieces of meat from its flesh.
The two of them, without any warning, jumped at the [Whimrat] and bit it.
The single one was overpowered by the two. It tried to fight back and managed to increase the number of wounds on their bodies. However, it soon succumbed to the pain and blood loss.
It fell weakly on the ground, bleeding heavily.
Its body was riddled with wounds. As it died, black gases swarmed the corpse and it rose with a darkened body and dark, blank eyes.
Three undead walked ahead.
Anvil followed back with a wide smile.
Anvil didn't check for [Cores], as he had learned from the Knight Supervision Department (KSD) that only monsters that can use [Mana] can have [Cores].
These F-rank monsters couldn't use [Mana], so there was no point in searching them. He knew they had no [Mana] because, if they had, he would have died instantly.
A monster with or without [Mana] has a difference as vast as heaven and earth.
Anvil passed many corridors of the dungeon. It was long, but fortunately, there was only one turn, so he didn't have to decide which path to walk.
He utilized the undead to outnumber [Whimrats], which were alone in each corridor that took 2–3 minutes to walk through.
As his number of undead increased, it became easier to kill them.
He arrived at the final corridor. Anvil could see the corridor leading to a wide room.
Anvil casually glanced at the [Whimrat]. It was, like the others, trying to dig through the stone flooring; however, it couldn't.
It wasn't that the [Whimrats] were weaker than the Giant Mouse. They were faster and stronger. However, the floor of this dungeon was different from the one Anvil worked in.
It was more solid and tough. Anvil could feel a clear difference between them. Hence, even a Giant Mouse would break its claws rather than dig through this area.
Anvil commanded his undead army. In the army, there were 12 undead. Each one looked more brutal than the other.
Filled with holes, gashes, and blood clots, they moved surprisingly swiftly.
All 12 of them jumped at the lone [Whimrat].
SQUEAK!
A painful squeak escaped the monster's mouth. Anvil couldn't see the miserable battle as the undead [Whimrats] had blocked the view with their bodies, but he could see the blood flowing underneath them.
A puddle of blood formed and the undead stopped. They stepped sideways.
Anvil saw the pitiful [Whimrat]'s corpse. It was filled with bite and scratch marks. Anvil stretched his hands.
"[Necromancy]," he whispered.
Black gases emitted from his palms and the corpse. Thin magical threads connected him to the corpse.
The black gas entered the corpse and its eyes bolted open.
A new undead had joined his army.
"Now that I think about it, how am I summoning them? I don't think I have used any [Mana]. Do I even possess [Mana]? Also, is there a limit to the number of undead I can summon? There are so many questions but no answers."
Anvil thought of various things. He felt a wide ray of emotions.
Excitement, fear, understanding, and now emotionlessness. He had taken the ability as a fact.
However, he wished to learn the answers. But he had no idea where to find them.
He shook his head to clear off the thoughts. He walked into the room following the undead.
He didn't walk in front because he feared something would suddenly jump at him and he wouldn't be able to react in time.
As they entered the room, Anvil heard a lot of noise coming from multiple directions.
Squeak! Squeak! Squeak!
Squeaking sounds came from all directions.
Twenty [Whimrats] were all screaming while digging the ground. Their aggressive nature didn't make them get along with each other. However, being of the same kind, they didn't attack each other either.
As the undead [Whimrats] came, the alive ones all froze and turned their heads toward the undead.
Squeeeeeaaaaakkkkkkkkkk!
The long echo of squeaking sounds was ear-piercing.
Anvil closed his ears with his palms, gritting his teeth as his ears hurt. They even bled.
"Go kill them!" Anvil didn't have to voice his commands, but he was so distressed by the sound that he shouted.
The undead [Whimrats] all became active and ran.
The alive [Whimrats] ran at them from all directions too.
The two sides collided and a battle began.
The battle was pure chaos. It had the rawest violence one could find.
Rats jumped on top of each other, biting and stabbing with their long sharp nails. The thin tails moved, hitting anyone in their way at such speed they would fling anyone back.
Blood splattered around, dyeing the floor red. Like a river, large amounts of blood were flowing.
Squeak!!!
Various squeaking sounds of different frequencies echoed in the room. Some were filled with rage, some in agony, and some with excitement… The sound represented the state of the alive [Whimrats].
The undead ones weren't faring well either. Limbs were torn off them. Large chunks of flesh were missing. Bones were broken.
There were some undead that couldn't move and were trying to bite whatever came in their way.
One undead, however, succumbed to such brutality. As its head was severed, the dark gas released from its body, immobilizing the undead. It returned again to its original state—as a corpse.
However, the corpse didn't have any black gases, hence Anvil couldn't summon the corpse again.
"So a beheaded corpse can't be summoned—and it's their weak point." He made a note and memorized it.
He had to be careful on that front.
Anvil, from a distance, watched the violence with excitement clear on his face. If he had popcorn, that would have been the best.
Anvil didn't only lose undead but gained too. From the 20 [Whimrats], there wasn't a single one that was unharmed. Each [Whimrat] had injuries that were oozing blood every second.
The severe loss of blood had weakened the majority of them.
The remaining undead, excluding the one that couldn't move, numbered only 5.
The five of them, however, continued to attack in frenzy.
Squeak…
With a soft wail, one [Whimrat] embraced death. However, its body didn't obtain the rest it deserved.
Black gas swarmed it, which frightened the other [Whimrats] so much that they ran back. The undead chased them.
It became a massacre.
As another undead joined, the tide of battle—which was already leaning toward the undead side—was pushed to its peak.
The injured and wounded [Whimrats] couldn't exert their strength. Unlike the undead, which could move even with every injury on their body, they couldn't act with such grave injuries.
Hence, the undead attacked fiercely, killing one [Whimrat] after another which then joined the fray and attacked the others.
"Necromancer shines the best at war. It isn't wrong at all." Anvil had a smug expression. His happiness knew no bounds.
He had obtained 20 more undead. He left the one which couldn't move. He now had a total of 25 undeads which would fight for him.
"Ahahahaha! This is great." Anvil laughed and walked to the end of the room which had another door.
Before entering the door, he checked the quest.
