Chapter 220: Chapter 220: The Grand Wedding
"Hurry up, are you on a stroll?"
Kawakaze, dressed in a black-patterned haori and hakama, rode a large black "horse". Though he wasn't fond of traditional attire, he tolerated it since he was in a foreign land.
Initially, there was no horse, but Kawakaze insisted on riding one—an attempt to align with the grand wedding he envisioned.
"Oww~" The black horse let out a low, miserable whine.
In a world where ninjas could outrun horses, finding a tall steed that met Kawakaze's standards was nearly impossible. Resourceful as ever, he came up with a solution: Onimaru became his mount.
Nayuki assisted by performing the Transformation Technique and then reassured the reluctant Onimaru, "He's getting married today, so don't take it personally."
The Onimaru, resigned to his role while living under another's roof, lowered his head in defeat.
"If you delay my auspicious time, I'll skin you alive," Kawakaze warned, patting the black horse's head. Startled, the transformed Onimaru sped up.
As Onimaru quickened his pace, the procession behind Kawakaze followed suit. On either side of the street, crowds formed walls of people shouting their blessings.
On one hand, Kawakaze commanded immense respect; on the other, the Hatake Clan spared no expense. Candy and preserved fruit were tossed around like confetti, delighting the elderly and children alike as they scrambled to grab the treats and share in the happiness.
As they approached the Senju mansion, Kawakaze's grin widened. He had waited a long time for this day.
Upon arriving, Kawakaze dismounted in front of the mansion, adjusted his attire, and strode forward confidently.
"The lucky time has arrived!" a voice announced, followed by the crackling of firecrackers.
Along the way, Kawakaze had received countless blessings, which he acknowledged with grace. Crossing the courtyard with ease, he approached Tsunade's room. Several disciples, including Minato, followed behind him, their faces filled with eager anticipation.
"Sister, brother-in-law has entered the door."
In Tsunade's room, Nawaki reported the latest news.
"I heard you. There's no need to repeat yourself."
The moment the firecrackers sounded, Tsunade knew Kawakaze had arrived. She adjusted her sitting position again and smoothed her slightly disheveled hair.
"Grandma, is there something wrong with me?"
Seeing Tsunade's rare display of girlish mannerisms, Mito's lips curled into a faint smile.
"No, my granddaughter is the most beautiful."
The sight of Tsunade marrying for love reminded Mito of Hashirama. Though there were political considerations in her marriage, love had been the driving force. Even Madara, no matter how resigned, could only watch as Hashirama was swept away by her.
"That's good."
Tsunade fell silent after speaking, her eyes fixed on the closed door.
Before long, a commotion stirred outside.
"Tsunade, I've come to marry you today."
"Can you come in now?"
Kawakaze cleared his throat before knocking on the door. Instantly, all eyes in the room turned to Tsunade.
"Come in," said Tsunade, her cheeks slightly flushed, allowing Kawakaze to enter.
"You look beautiful today."
The moment Kawakaze laid eyes on Tsunade, he couldn't look away. He followed up his admiration with a flattering remark. Flattery, no matter how often used, never seemed to lose its charm.
"Brother-in-law, if you say that, does it mean my sister wasn't beautiful before?" Nawaki beamed mischievously, seizing the chance to tease Kawakaze before Tsunade could respond.
The memory of a past incident where Tsunade had grilled him flashed in Nawaki's mind. If Misaki hadn't intervened, he wasn't sure how he would have escaped that situation.
"What's it to you? Stay out of this," Tsunade snapped at Nawaki, her tone laced with double standards.
"You're very handsome today too," she added, ignoring Nawaki's aggrieved expression and smiling warmly at Kawakaze.
"Come on, have some sense, both of you."
"Hurry up and get out; the guests are waiting impatiently," Mito interjected, cutting through their exchange and urging them to move along.
"Okay, Grandma," Kawakaze replied, though just as he was about to say something more, Mito's words left him no choice but to comply. Instead, he approached Tsunade and extended a hand in an inviting gesture.
Tsunade placed her slender hand in his palm, rising gracefully to her feet.
Outside, the guests were already seated, and Kawakaze emerged holding Tsunade's hand.
"They really are a perfect match."
"A match made in heaven."
"What a perfect couple," murmured voices from the crowd.
...
The guests looked at Kawakaze and Tsunade, sighing in admiration. Handsome men and beautiful women are captivating anywhere, especially when both hold prominent positions in Konoha.
Mito, as the highest-status elder from both families, had already taken her seat in a space reserved in the inner hall. In front of her were two futons.
"The newlyweds will now pay their respects," announced Koharu Utatane, serving as the emcee. Standing not far from Mito, Koharu looked every bit the experienced officiant. As someone who had once followed Hashirama, Mito's late husband, Koharu held a certain reverence for her.
Kawakaze and Tsunade walked slowly through the center of the gathered crowd, approaching Mito.
"Grandma," they greeted in unison before kneeling on the futons.
"Serve tea," Koharu instructed, and a servant promptly brought two cups.
Mito smiled as she sipped the tea. Once finished, she retrieved a stack of land deeds from behind her.
"Tsunade, there's nothing else that Grandma has," she began. "This is a set of land deeds. You've been thinking about it for a long time, so I'm giving it to you today."
She handed the deeds to Tsunade—a fortune that underscored Mito's status as Konoha's wealthiest individual.
"Grandma, no, just leave it to Nawaki," Kawakaze interjected, visibly uneasy. He worried that Tsunade might squander such a fortune, thinking it better left to Nawaki.
Tsunade shot him a glare, silently questioning if she'd married a fool who didn't understand the value of wealth.
"Your family is your responsibility," Mito said firmly. "When you marry into a family, you need a proper dowry."
Under Tsunade's eager gaze, Mito slipped the land deeds into her hands.
"Thank you, Grandma," Tsunade said, her tone carrying rare warmth. For a moment, Mito wondered if this was the closest Tsunade had ever come to calling her "Granny"— or it was just her imagination.
"Silly child," Mito chuckled, "give me a grandchild soon."
After Mito finished speaking, Kawakaze and Tsunade bowed respectfully three times.
"The ceremony is complete. Let's entertain our guests," Koharu announced before heading to her seat, where Hiruzen and Homura were already waiting.
Kawakaze and Tsunade stood up, making their way towards the guests, followed closely by servants carrying trays of drinks.
At each table, the couple graciously accepted the drinks offered to them. Inevitably, they used Chakra to stave off intoxication—otherwise, with so many toasts to honor, they might not even make it to the bridal chamber, let alone walk home unaided.
They soon reached Jiraiya's table. Despite all the drinking, Kawakaze and Tsunade remained relatively sober.
"Congratulations," Jiraiya said, raising his cup. He had countless thoughts swirling in his mind, but in the end, these three simple words were all he could say. In that moment, he had truly let go.
"I heard it from Nawaki, you should hurry as well," Tsunade quipped, her sharp smile lighting up her face as she clinked glasses with Jiraiya.
Maki, sharing a toast with Kawakaze, glanced at Tsunade and understood why Jiraiya had fallen for her. All he could think was that Kawakaze was a very fortunate man.
The couple continued making rounds, drinking with Orochimaru and the others before moving to the next table.
By the time they finished all the sake, Kawakaze and Tsunade hurried to a quiet corner, using Chakra to clear the effects of the alcohol. Any more drinks, and they'd be ready for bed rather than the festivities.
As the evening wore on, the banquet gradually wound down.
In the midst of the departing guests, Kawakaze escorted Tsunade to the bridal sedan chair. He turned back to mount Onimaru, who, thankfully, had been fed earlier—otherwise, the already begrudging mount would have been even more resentful.
Amidst the crackling of firecrackers, the bridal sedan chair began its journey to the Hatake Clan.
Mito stood at the doorway, watching the sedan chair disappear into the distance, a wave of melancholy washing over her as the festivities moved forward.
The joy carried on as the sedan chair arrived at the Hatake Clan, which was adorned with lanterns and streamers for the occasion. Nayuki and Sakumo waited at the entrance, both visibly excited.
For Sakumo, the eldest brother often acting as a father figure, today was a rare chance to celebrate wholeheartedly.
The sedan chair came to a stop in front of the Hatake Clan's residence. Kawakaze dismounted from Onimaru and stepped forward to help Tsunade out of the palanquin.
"Let's go," said Kawakaze, pulling Tsunade from her thoughts.
Tsunade had felt a wave of unfamiliar emotion upon seeing the gates of the Hatake Clan today. Though she knew every tree and plant in the garden, from this day forward, it would be her home. It was an entirely new feeling.
"Okay," she replied, stepping forward. Together, she and Kawakaze walked shoulder to shoulder toward the residence.
Following the emcee's instructions at the entrance, they performed the formal and heavy rituals like puppets, going through each step as required.
Meanwhile, Sakumo and Nayuki were already seated in the hall, awaiting the newlyweds for the next round of formalities.
"You need to stop showing off," Nayuki said, noticing Sakumo's barely contained smugness.
"Is it that obvious?" Sakumo asked, feigning surprise. He thought he had been subtle, but Nayuki's sharp eyes had seen right through him.
"Heh..." Nayuki didn't bother to argue, merely turning her head with a cold smile.
Before long, Kawakaze and Tsunade entered the hall.
"Big Brother, Sister-in-law," they greeted, bowing slightly toward Sakumo and Nayuki.
On both sides, onlookers watched with interest. Among them, Duy craned his neck, eager to witness the scene. The gathered friends clearly anticipated some entertainment.
Kakashi and Kurenai, too young to fully understand the moment, were held securely on either side by Shinku's wife.
"Well, what are you waiting for?" Sakumo said impatiently. "Kneel."
Kawakaze's lips twitched. His older brother seemed unusually giddy today. While kneeling according to etiquette was customary, Sakumo's tone carried a hint of personal satisfaction.
"Kneel," Tsunade's eyes sparkled with amusement.
She knew full well that Sakumo's antics weren't directed at her. These brothers always had a knack for turning even solemn moments into something unexpected.
"Okay," Kawakaze muttered, shooting Sakumo a pointed glare that said, I'll remember this.
Sakumo, unfazed, looked almost disdainful, his expression smug. It was as if to say, Even if the Sage of Six Paths himself appeared, you'd still have to kneel before me today.
Reluctantly, Kawakaze and Tsunade knelt in front of Sakumo and Nayuki.
Grinning ear to ear, Sakumo quickly retrieved two thick red envelopes from behind his back, handing one to each of them with an air of benevolent superiority.
"From now on, we're family," Nayuki said with a warm smile as she took out a bracelet she had been saving for a long time and gently placed it on Tsunade's wrist.
"Thank you, sister-in-law," Tsunade replied, her tone sincere. The two women shared a harmonious moment of understanding.
Meanwhile, the atmosphere between Kawakaze and Sakumo was far less cordial, as the two exchanged sharp glares.
"Go ahead and hit me if you dare. Aren't you a big shot?" Sakumo taunted.
"Go ahead and wait until after today is over," Kawakaze shot back.
Their silent battle of wills continued.
"What are they doing, fighting like cockerels?" Duy asked, noticing the charged tension but unable to grasp the full meaning. For him, the "melodrama" was proving unsatisfying.
"Let me translate for you," Shinku said, stepping in with a mischievous grin.
"See how Sakumo's eyes are wide open, brimming with power?" he began, pointing out Sakumo's intense expression. "He's showing Kawakaze that he's the boss of this family."
Duy nodded, finding Shinku's analysis quite reasonable.
"So, what does Kawakaze mean?" Duy asked, eager for more clarification.
"It's simple," Shinku continued with growing enthusiasm. "Look at Kawakaze's stern expression. He's clearly saying that after today, he's going to duel Sakumo."
Shinku was so engrossed in his playful interpretation that he almost started analyzing Tsunade and Nayuki's calm conversation.
"I don't think that's necessary," Duy interjected. "If it comes to a duel, Big Brother Sakumo has never won. Kawakaze probably just wants to beat him up."
Duy's blunt statement might have caused a stir, but luckily Sakumo didn't hear it. Otherwise, their good friendship might not have survived the day.
"If you put it that way, I think there's a point."
The two spectators exchanged nods, clearly pleased with their analysis. This "drama" was deemed juicy enough. In two words: absolutely thrilling!
"Okay, get up," Nayuki's voice rang out. Sakumo, however, secretly wished Kawakaze would kneel just a little longer.
Kawakaze helped Tsunade to her feet, shooting a threatening glance at Sakumo before standing up himself. He then turned away with a smile as the guests began to enjoy the feast.
After making another round of sake toasts, Kawakaze and Tsunade returned to the main table to sit down. The atmosphere there was nothing short of chaotic.
Sakumo, genuinely overjoyed, had drunk the most by far. He loudly proclaimed that once the banquet ended, he would go to the family shrine to pray for Tsunade to give birth to a healthy baby boy soon.
Hearing this, young Kakashi clapped his hands excitedly and shouted, "Little brother, little sister!"
Kawakaze and Tsunade's presence elevated the mood further, spurring the guests to drink even more enthusiastically.
As the sky darkened, the guests began to leave. Kawakaze and Tsunade stood by the door, warmly bidding farewell to each departing guest.
Once the last guest had left, it was time for Kawakaze and Tsunade to retreat to their bridal chamber.
The remaining close friends lingered, laughing and joking as they sent the newlyweds off with teasing remarks and dirty jokes.
Bang! The door to the bridal chamber slammed shut, finally silencing the crowd.
With no interest in eavesdropping, the group returned to the dining room to resume their revelry. Inside the bridal chamber, none of the commotion mattered to the two.
"Want some more?"
Although they had shared intimate moments many times, Kawakaze felt a little restrained on this significant day—their wedding day.
"I'm afraid you'll fall asleep if I drink more."
Tsunade poured Kawakaze a cup of herbal tea. The two of them had already indulged quite a bit today.
"This dress is really uncomfortable." Tsunade removed her kimono and tossed it aside casually.
Beneath it, she wore a short-sleeved undershirt and a pair of leggings. Sitting across from Kawakaze, her bare white skin gleamed under the light.
"It really is uncomfortable," Kawakaze agreed, sipping his tea as he also removed his kimono. Now, they sat facing each other, dressed in just a few pieces of clothing.
After finishing his tea, Kawakaze glanced at Tsunade. Even after all their time together, he still felt his heart stir when he looked at her.
"It's getting late. Let's get some rest," Kawakaze said, shifting his gaze to the bed, which was covered in freshly changed bedding.
"Mm." Tsunade set down her teacup and stood up. But before she could take a few steps, Kawakaze swept her up into his arms.
"Starting today, can we nurture this new life together?" Kawakaze asked softly, his gaze tender as he held the lovely woman in his arms.
"Yes." Tsunade hooked a finger under Kawakaze's chin, lightly nibbling her lips as her expression turned alluring.
"Let's do it!" With a grin, Kawakaze tossed Tsunade onto the bed with precision. In a swift motion, he leapt after her with the agility of a tiger.
"Umm..." As Tsunade let out a soft whimper, their clothes began to scatter to the floor, piece by piece. Before long, the room echoed with urgent, rhythmic sounds.
An intense encounter had officially begun.
After what might have been two or three rounds, the "battle" finally came to an end.
"I did my best. Let's see how long you can keep surprising me," Kawakaze said, sweating profusely as he lay on his back, panting heavily.
"I'm sure I'll be fine." Tsunade rested her head on Kawakaze's right arm, her cheeks still flushed from their passionate exchange.
"I'll be fine too."
Kawakaze's pride as a man remained unshaken, and with a surge of energy seemingly conjured from thin air, he confidently took the reins and mounted her once more.
