Chapter 98: Chapter 98: Obito's Setback
"Who's there?!"
"We have an intruder! Ahhh—!"
In the depths of Konoha's prison, two guards barely had time to cry out before collapsing lifelessly to the ground. Uchiha Obito, hidden behind his black-and-yellow striped mask, retracted the iron chain he had used to kill them. With a casual gesture, their bodies were absorbed into the swirling vortex of his Kamui dimension.
"Heh, let them keep fighting. I'll be taking the tailed beasts," Obito mused silently.
Zetsu had decided to pay Orochimaru a visit without informing him, clearly thinking he could act behind his back. Did he really believe he could hide something like that from him?
"The will of Madara… the perfect world of Infinite Tsukuyomi has no place for a dead Uchiha soul," Obito sneered inwardly.
Black Zetsu, a manifestation of Madara's will, had preserved the old man's corpse and secretly approached Orochimaru. Obito didn't need to guess their schemes—Orochimaru's revival of Tobirama Senju had thrown a wrench into Akatsuki's plans. Capturing the jinchūriki had been slow, with only the Five-Tails successfully taken so far.
Zetsu was growing impatient.
"Not that it matters anymore," Obito muttered as the Sharingan behind his mask gleamed coldly.
With Akatsuki's forces drawing Konoha's top fighters away, and Orochimaru and Nagato keeping Tobirama busy, the village was left defenseless. It was the perfect opportunity. Once he claimed the tailed beasts captured by Konoha and retrieved the Rinnegan from Nagato, the power of the Gedo Statue would finally be his.
Infinite Tsukuyomi could only be cast by him, Uchiha Obito.
Casting a glance at the scar on his chest, Obito's expression hardened as he began searching the prison for the location of the captured jinchūriki. Using the Sharingan, he subdued any guards he encountered with genjutsu, leaving a trail of unconscious bodies behind.
"This cell has the most guards. Could it be here?" he muttered, his voice laced with anticipation.
If the tailed beasts captured by Konoha were truly here, his plans would progress smoothly.
Grabbing a key from one of the unconscious guards, he unlocked the heavy steel door sealing the cell. Inside, he found Roshi, the jinchūriki of the Four-Tails; Utakata, the jinchūriki of the Six-Tails; and Fu, the jinchūriki of the Seven-Tails. All three were bound in heavy restraints and looked weak and lifeless.
They barely glanced at the intruder before slumping back into silence. The seals placed on them by Tobirama had drained their chakra, and their tailed beasts had been subdued with Sharingan-induced hypnosis. They were utterly powerless.
Seeing his targets helpless before him, Obito chuckled quietly.
"Too easy…"
Yet, something felt off. The resistance he'd faced so far had been laughable. Only a handful of weak guards had stood in his way.
"Konoha wouldn't leave their jinchūriki so poorly guarded. Is Tobirama really this careless?"
Shaking his head, Obito decided not to dwell on it. The tailed beasts were real; their chakra couldn't be faked. Taking a step forward, he prepared to transport all three jinchūriki into the Kamui dimension.
But the moment he moved, a primal, beastly killing intent locked onto him.
Obito's reflexes, honed through countless battles—including his clash with the Yellow Flash, Minato Namikaze—kicked in. His body instinctively activated Kamui, rendering him intangible.
BOOM!
A devastating punch tore through the air, smashing into the steel floor where Obito had been standing moments before. The reinforced ground caved in, leaving a crater several meters deep.
The three jinchūriki scrambled to the far corner of the cell, trembling in fear.
Obito's eyes widened beneath his mask. His body stiffened as he realized how close he'd come to being obliterated. That punch… If he hadn't reacted in time, he would've been reduced to a pile of shredded limbs.
More terrifying was the fact that he hadn't sensed his attacker at all.
"Either they're a master of stealth… or their strength is leagues beyond mine," Obito thought grimly.
Turning slowly, he came face-to-face with a man wearing cracked armor and possessing lifeless eyes. The figure smiled warmly, almost disarmingly.
"So, you're the masked man Tobirama warned me about. That ability of yours is fascinating!" the figure said, his tone light and friendly.
Obito's heart sank as he took in the man's features. The cracked armor, the unmistakable signs of Edo Tensei, and the easy familiarity with Tobirama…
His thoughts raced.
"The First Hokage… Senju Hashirama!"
Apologetically, Hashirama scratched his head. "Sorry about this, but Tobirama told me to keep an eye on these jinchūriki. I can't let you take them."
Before Obito could respond, Hashirama attacked.
"Five minutes… just hold him off for five minutes," Hashirama muttered to himself, recalling Tobirama's explanation of the masked man's intangibility. Massive tree roots erupted from the floor, tearing through the steel and flooding the cell.
Obito, still intangible, phased through the wooden onslaught, his Kamui ability pushed to its limits. Even so, he couldn't make a single move toward the jinchūriki. Hashirama's immense power was on full display, every strike calculated to protect the tailed beast hosts.
Hashirama, despite his carefree demeanor, quickly pieced together Obito's weakness. If the masked man could only attack while tangible, then all he needed to do was wait for his opening.
Obito, meanwhile, was growing desperate. He couldn't risk a direct confrontation with the legendary "God of Shinobi."
"This isn't over, Hashirama. I'll be back…" Obito growled, retreating into the swirling vortex of Kamui.
Hashirama watched him vanish, the tension in his shoulders easing. Turning to the jinchūriki, he gave them a cheerful grin.
"It's all right now! The bad guy's gone. I'll make sure you're safe," he said warmly.
The three jinchūriki stared at him in silence, their expressions a mix of disbelief and exhaustion.
When Nara Shikaku and a squad of reinforcements arrived, Hashirama explained the situation and repaired the damaged cell with Wood Release. To ensure Obito wouldn't return, he crafted a wooden chair and stationed himself outside the cell, happily watching the scenery.
Hours later, a Flying Thunder God kunai pulsed with familiar chakra. A figure appeared in an instant, grabbing Hashirama's arm.
"No time to explain! Brother, come with me!" Tobirama shouted.
