Chapter 20: Chapter 20: Terminal Velocity: 11 m/s
The next day
Location: Training Ground 5 – Afternoon
A few jōnin stood at the perimeter.
They weren't there to spectate. They were there just in case.
Word had spread quickly — about a boy who didn't even graduate and won the match by lifting a genin by the leg like a sack of rice. Some thought it was exaggerated. but Still, they came to see for themselves.
In the center of the field stood Otis, quiet, hands in his cloak pockets, staring up at the cloudless sky.
Across from him, a seasoned chunin named Maru adjusted his headband.
"You're Otis?" he asked.
Otis gave a nod.
"I'm not going easy just because you're a kid," Maru said, rolling his shoulders. "This is still a formal test."
Otis didn't respond.
"You got weapons on you?"
Otis glanced down.
He picked up a small stone from the dirt.
Maru raised an eyebrow. "A rock?"
Otis held it loosely in his hand, eyes still looking at the sky.
Iruka stood between them again, visibly more nervous than yesterday.
"Same rules," he called. "First to fall unconscious or surrender — loses. Begin!"
There was silence.
Otis didn't move.
He continued staring upward, like the fight hadn't started at all.
Maru shifted his weight, dropping into a stance. "Anytime now, kid."
Then—just as Maru moved—
There was a soft click — the sound of Otis's fingers letting go of the stone.
No one saw his arm move. His movements were too fast for a genin or chunin to see.
The throw had already happened before Maru even registered movement.
Otis didn't need to aim anymore. He had already calculated the arc in his head.
Velocity, gravity, wind resistance, spin rate — all of it, reduced to raw instinct, because of his years of practice.
The stone had been released at a 72° angle with a vertical velocity component of approximately 12.6 m/s.
Factoring gravity (9.8 m/s²), it would reach its apex in 1.29 seconds, before beginning its deadly descent.
And all maru saw was just a faint blur in the air.
Maru was already charging in, closing the gap. Otis wasn't moving, wasn't reacting — Maru assumed it was over. He thought Otis was afraid of him 'a chunin'. He was already preparing to land the final hit.
No genin could dodge at this close range, after all.
And Then— suddenly
BONK.

The stone came down perfectly vertical — terminal velocity estimated at around 11 m/s, with a rotational torque that would make any shuriken jealous — and slammed cleanly into the top of Maru's head with a dull, unimpressive pop.
Maru didn't cry out.
He just froze, confused,
His brain caught up a second late. His eyes crossed.
And then — went white.
"...Ow?"
He collapsed backwards, arms spread, he was out cold.
From throw to impact: 2.6 seconds.
Total damage dealt: pride, ego, and… yeah, probably short-term memory.
Otis noted it calmly.
The jōnin watching blinked.
Iruka blinked.
Even the birds stopped chirping.
Otis, calm as ever, walked over and gently nudged Maru's head with his foot.
"You okay?"
He turned to Iruka.
"Is that enough?"
Iruka looked at the chunin. Then at Otis. Then up at the sky.
In his head, he sighed.
I'm too old for this shit.
And I'm not even that old.
"...You hit him with a rock," Iruka said blankly.
"I told him I had a weapon," Otis said, dead serious.

Location: Hokage's Office – Same Day, After the Spar
The door creaked open.
Otis stepped in, ducking slightly through the frame. He stood there, dirt on his sleeves, holding the graduation slip in one hand.
Hiruzen sat at his desk, staring into a cup of tea that had long gone cold.
He didn't look up.
"Sit, Otis."
Otis walked forward and sat cross-legged on the floor. The chair didn't seem worth the effort. And Otis didn't want to test the strength of that chair right now—who knew how expensive it was.
A pause.
Hiruzen finally raised his eyes.
"…So. How'd the test go?" he asked, even though he already knew.
Otis looked thoughtful. "I threw a rock."
Hiruzen leaned back. "Where, exactly, did you throw it?"
Otis looked up, pointing at the ceiling. "Up."
"And then?"
Otis shrugged. "Down."
Hiruzen blinked slowly. "That's it?"
"I was aiming for the chunin."
"And he didn't see it?"
Otis thought for a second. "No. I think he was looking at my hands. Not the sky.
Hiruzen covered his face for a moment, sighing.
"Otis… You do realize that most genin use jutsu to pass that kind of test."
Otis nodded, looking genuinely thoughtful. "That seems inefficient."
Hiruzen opened his mouth to respond — then stopped. Closed it. And Lit his pipe.
"You know what? Fine. Congratulations. You're a chūnin now."
Otis blinked. "What."
"What, you don't want to be? You're not suited to being a genin," Hiruzen said, standing and moving to a shelf. He pulled down a folded uniform and a forehead protector.
"Genin are usually sent on D-rank missions. Chores. Escort work. I don't think you're suited for that."
Hiruzen lit his pipe again, muttering, "You'd accidentally collapse a barn trying to carry firewood."
He blew out a breath, then gave a tired chuckle..
"Do you know how many people ask me to skip ranks?"
Otis shook his head.
"Everyone. Every year. You're one of the few I'm actually considering."
He walked back to his seat, sat down with a grunt, and pulled out a different scroll from the shelf behind him.
Otis blinked.
"You're a chūnin now. Effective immediately," Hiruzen said, handing him the uniform and headband.
"That's all?"
"That's all. Except—" He looked up with a lazy smile.
"—if you throw another rock at a shinobi, I'll have to promote you again. And I don't have a jōnin uniform in your size."
"But, You've done well," the old man said, voice soft now. "No shortcuts. No favors. You earned this."
Otis gave a small nod.
Hiruzen watched him for a moment, fingers beneath his chin. There was pride in his eyes. But also thought and Caution.

Shoutout to random1994 for sparking the idea—We're now naming Otis's throwing techniques after firearms:From '9mm Flick' to '.50 Cal Breaker' and 'Shotgun Scatter', each name reflects the type of throw—speed, power, spread.
What do you guys think? Got any cool names you'd like to see? 👀
