Chapter 122: Chapter 122: After the Battle
When Naruto regained consciousness, he found himself staring at tree branches passing overhead, sunlight filtering through the dense canopy and warming his tired face.
Feeling the sway of motion, he groggily muttered, "Where... am I?"
"You're awake, Naruto," Kakashi's familiar voice called from below.
"Kakashi-sensei..." Naruto murmured. As his thoughts sharpened, he suddenly remembered. "Sasuke! Where's Sasuke?!"
Naruto tried to sit up, his body trembling with the effort.
"Relax," Kakashi said gently. "You were seriously injured in your battle with Sasuke. Your body is weak—take it easy for now."
Before Naruto could argue, Kirito strode over, lifting a bound figure into Naruto's view.
"Looking for him?" Kirito asked nonchalantly, holding up Sasuke.
Bound tightly by thick, vine-like restraints, Sasuke was unable to move. His face burned with frustration, but he could do little more than glare. The vines sapped his strength and chakra, leaving him powerless.
Naruto exhaled deeply in relief, the tension leaving his body. "Sasuke..." he murmured, before letting himself relax on Kakashi's back.
"Good," Sakura said softly, her tone filled with both relief and exhaustion.
The aftermath of the battle had left everyone shaken. Naruto, clad in his tailed beast cloak during the fight, had been severely injured by Sasuke's Kirin. Burns covered his body, and he had been on the verge of death. It was Kirito who had stabilized Naruto in the nick of time.
Even though his wounds had been healed, the immense physical and mental strain left Naruto unconscious for an entire day.
Sasuke, having exhausted his chakra after using Kirin and fighting Naruto, had reverted to his normal state. Kakashi and Sakura had subdued him without much resistance.
Walking alongside Kakashi, Sakura cast occasional glances at Sasuke, her emotions conflicted. Despite her relief at bringing him back, she couldn't forget how mercilessly he had wielded Kirin against Naruto, nearly killing him.
"I have to get stronger," she resolved silently. No longer would she stand by helplessly while her teammates fought and suffered. This mission had shown her that her healing abilities and combat skills were still lacking.
Kakashi, too, reflected on the mission as they traveled back to Konoha.
"This was a gamble that paid off," Kakashi admitted. "Tsunade's decision to assign Kirito to this mission was brilliant. Without him, we wouldn't have stood a chance against both Orochimaru and Sasuke."
Kirito, walking ahead, chuckled. "Don't give me all the credit. You did fine. Though..." he glanced at Sasuke and Orochimaru, both of whom were bound and silent, "I wish we'd caught Kabuto too. He slipped away before we could secure the base."
Kakashi sighed. "An undercover mission where the target escapes... That's a tough one to explain."
After days of travel, the gates of Konoha came into view. For Kakashi and Sakura, the sight brought a wave of relief.
In the Hokage's office, Tsunade listened intently to Kakashi's debriefing.
"Wait—did you say you captured both Orochimaru and Sasuke?" Tsunade's eyes widened as she stood abruptly.
"Yes, Lady Hokage," Kakashi confirmed. "Kirito is currently overseeing their confinement in the Torture and Interrogation Department."
Tsunade wasted no time. Throwing on her Hokage robe, she strode out of the office. "I need to see this for myself."
In the dim confines of the Torture and Interrogation Department, Orochimaru sat on a bed, his once-pristine demeanor now slightly disheveled. The flying vines that restrained him shimmered faintly, their strength bolstered by numerous sealing spells scrawled across his body.
Ibiki Morino stood watch nearby, his gaze sharp and unyielding. As Tsunade entered, Ibiki greeted her respectfully. "Lady Hokage."
Kirito leaned casually against the wall, a faint smirk on his face. "Surprised, Master?"
Tsunade glanced at Kirito, her tone softening. "You've done well, Kirito."
Then her eyes shifted to Orochimaru, who met her gaze with a faint, mocking smile.
"I never thought I'd see the day you were captured, Orochimaru," Tsunade said, her voice laced with both satisfaction and disbelief.
"Long time no see, Tsunade," Orochimaru replied, his tone as smooth and venomous as ever.
