"Never thought there'd be a day where even I, Uchiha Kazuki, might have the chance to become an elder of the clan."

Smiling faintly, Kazuki waved his hand dismissively and got up to leave.

"These things are for the clan leader to decide. I won't interfere too much."

This recent cleanup made Fugaku realize the drawbacks of having too many clan elders, so he intended to implement reforms. At the same time, he wanted to bind Kazuki more tightly to the clan by promoting him.

Fugaku sensed that Kazuki's priorities were shifting away from the clan. While Kazuki could redirect his focus, Fugaku couldn't let him stray too far from the family. Thus, Fugaku began laying the groundwork in advance.

Proposing Kazuki as a clan elder was one way to tie him down.

Kazuki accepted it with ease. If he didn't, Fugaku might come up with some more drastic measures.

Back in the office, Kazuki hadn't expected he'd be leaving so soon.

"Izumi, notify Jiro and Kaze to come to my office."

Since he'd proposed them as his successors, it was only natural to inform them first.

"Yes, Captain."

Before long, Jiro and Kaze arrived at the office. Kazuki motioned for them to sit down while he continued sorting through the files and documents on his desk.

Having been away from work for some time, his desk was a mess. While Izumi could organize the files, she didn't have the authority to review them.

"Kaze, come here."

"Me?"

Seeing Kazuki rise from his seat and gesture for him to sit, Kaze hesitated, exchanging a confused glance with Jiro before cautiously stepping forward.

Before he could react, Kazuki pushed him into the chair.

"What the—?!"

The moment Kaze sat down, it was as if the chair had grown spikes. He jumped up so fast he nearly hit the desk.

"Sit down!" Kazuki's gaze darkened.

"..."

What did I do to offend the Captain?

Jiro silently chuckled, gesturing with his hand to hint that Kaze was in trouble.

Captain, can I move to a safer spot?

Reluctantly sitting back in the chair, Uchiha Kaze felt like a scapegoat. He desperately wanted to know what he'd done wrong.

"Don't give me that look. Take this seriously."

"Starting today, you'll be handling all the cases for the first division, reviewing documents and files."

"..."

Hearing this, Kaze's scalp tingled. He looked like he was about to cry.

"Captain, how about we go to the training ground, and you beat me up instead? I don't know how to do this."

"Whether you know how or not, you'll learn. From now on, this is part of your duties as Uchiha Kaze. If you mess up, the clan leader himself will have a chat with you."

Beat you up? You didn't even do anything wrong; why would I do that?

"And you!"

Seeing someone hiding on the side, shoulders shaking with suppressed laughter, Kazuki became annoyed and grabbed a scroll, tossing it at him.

"What are you laughing at?! From today onward, Uchiha Jiro is the captain of the first division."

Jiro froze, quickly catching the scroll. He ran over obsequiously to hand it back to Kazuki.

Kazuki. "???"

Are you serious?

"C-Captain, let's not get angry. If there's an issue, we can talk it out. Look at Kaze—he's already scared half to death."

Looking at Jiro's exaggerated antics and Kaze's aggrieved face, Kazuki's temple throbbed, and the scroll in his hand began to warp.

We're doomed. The Captain is mad!

But why? What did we even do?

Jiro felt his heart racing and kept signaling to Kaze, who replied with a clueless look.

Bang!

Slamming the desk, Kazuki pointed at the two of them and started scolding.

"You two idiots! I'll soon be transferred out of the police force, so I recommended you both to be the division captain and vice-captain. And look at you now, acting like this!"

What the—?

That scared me!

I thought I'd done something wrong to upset the Captain. Turns out it's just a transfer.

Wait, a transfer?!

The two, who had just sighed in relief, suddenly widened their eyes in shock. Did Kazuki just say he was leaving the police force?

"That damn clan leader! How could he do this? I'll go confront him!"

Jiro immediately assumed Fugaku was targeting Kazuki, trying to kick him out of the police force, and exploded in anger.

Even Kaze, who had been curled up like a scolded child, now had a dangerous glint in his eyes. From the way his gaze shifted, it was clear he was already cooking up some bad ideas.

"Sit down and stop being idiots!"

Kazuki, now amused and annoyed, kicked Jiro lightly and motioned for Kaze to get out of the chair. Kaze quickly complied.

Leaning back in the chair with his feet up on the desk, Kazuki explained.

"The Hokage intends to assign me to work in the Hokage's office. Once I'm gone, the position of the first division captain will be vacant. I suggested to the clan leader that you two should take over."

"I don't care. Wherever you go, I'll go," Jiro retorted, immediately reverting to his brash nature.

"What did you just say?" Kazuki straightened up.

"..."

"Captain, he said he doesn't care," Kaze meekly added, throwing Jiro under the bus.

Jiro's eyes widened in disbelief, staring at Kaze as if he couldn't believe the betrayal.

"Enough, enough. Do you think I don't know your tricks?"

Kazuki rubbed his forehead in exasperation.

"One of you acts impulsively without thinking, and the other quietly stabs people in the back. Neither of you is any good. Still, recommending you for the roles of captain and vice-captain was my idea. It has nothing to do with the clan leader. Though your personalities are flawed—one being hot-headed and the other reserved—you complement each other. So, the first division will now have a vice-captain position as well."

"From now on, Jiro handles external matters, and Kaze handles internal ones. That's final. As for that 'wherever you go, we'll go' nonsense, forget it. I need you to stay with the clan and the police force."

"So the clan leader isn't..." Jiro scratched his bald head, finally realizing.

You're not as dumb as you act. What a miracle.
