'You, Jiraiya, are a well-respected figure in Konoha, so why do you like climbing through windows? It was bad enough when you came, but you're doing it again when you leave! By the way, Tsunade has the same habit.'

"Why is the old man in such a hurry to have me come over?

"Well... it seems to have something to do with Asuma."

"Asuma?"

'Don't tell me something happened to the kid, or he got into trouble.'

Mentioning Asuma, everyone's first reaction was, "What kind of trouble has this kid caused now?" That shows just how ingrained Asuma's reputation is.

Jiraiya rushed to the Hokage's office building as fast as possible and, out of habit, climbed through the window.

"Old man, did Asuma get into trouble?"

"Hmm..."

It was only then that Jiraiya noticed something was wrong with the Third Hokage's expression. Even when the leader and elder of the Shimura clan went missing, his face didn't look this grim.

"They've disappeared. The method is similar to what happened with the Shimura clan—no signs of a battle, no clues to follow, as if they vanished into thin air."

Sensing the Third Hokage's foul mood, Tsunade took the initiative to explain.

"No way."

Jiraiya was stunned. They still hadn't explained the Shimura clan's situation, and now it was happening in the Daimyo's residence as well. It seemed like things were getting serious. If this hidden enemy continues to target people in Konoha, the consequences could be dire.

Not to mention, just this situation alone was enough to unsettle the people of Konoha. No one wants to be inexplicably approached by an enemy, only to vanish or die without a trace. This kind of enemy, one who is invisible and untouchable, is the most terrifying.

The Hokage's office was in chaos.

Kazuki had finished work on time and was preparing to treat himself to a meal, after all the running around he'd done last night. It had been exhausting.

"Captain!!"

Just as he stepped into the hall, someone called out to him. Kazuki knew immediately that his dinner plans had failed, and he'd probably have to work overtime.

"What is it? Can it wait until tomorrow?"

"No, it's urgent."

Kaze handed him a document. Kazuki rolled his eyes and opened it.

Someone had died.

It definitely required overtime. If it were an ordinary security case, they could delay it, or if it weren't serious, the duty squad could handle it. But with a death involved, Kazuki had to take it on personally.

Most importantly, the incident had occurred in the area under the responsibility of the first squad.

There was no way for Kazuki to pass this off.

"The suspect fled after the incident?"

"Yes."

Kaze followed behind Kazuki.

"We've already questioned the guards at the village entrance. They said they didn't see Makino leave. If there was no disguise involved, then the suspect must still be hiding in the village."

"What a hassle."

"Let's start by investigating his close friends."

In any world, when a suspect commits a crime, it's not uncommon for their friends or family to cover for them or even help them escape. The police department had seen this kind of thing many times.

Kazuki didn't bring many people with him—just Kaze and Itachi, who had been about to leave work but was caught by Kazuki.

"Captain, the files are here."

Itachi handed Kazuki the documents from the police department. Kazuki took a quick glance and became intrigued.

"Things are getting interesting."

Just after dealing with Asuma, now they were getting involved with Asuma's future wife?

"Do you... have any business here?" Upon hearing the knock on the door, Kurenai, dressed in casual clothes, opened it. To her surprise, standing there were members of the Uchiha clan.

Instinctively, Kurenai partially closed the door, showing only half her face as she looked at Kazuki, Kaze, and Itachi standing at the entrance.

The Uchiha's reputation wasn't great, so it was natural for her to react this way.

Plus, Kurenai's father had died during the Nine-Tails' attack, so she didn't have much goodwill toward the Uchiha. And on top of that, Kazuki and the others were dressed in police department uniforms.

Seeing those uniforms, it was clear that they weren't here for anything good.

"There's a case we need to investigate. Would it be convenient to come in and discuss it?"

Kazuki handed her the file. Kurenai's red eyes were full of suspicion. She hesitated for a moment but took the file.

"Ah!!"

After glancing at the file, Kurenai let out a gasp, "Makino!!"

"May we come in?" Kazuki asked again.

"Please, come in." After a brief hesitation, Kurenai opened the door, allowing the three of them to enter.

Kazuki walked in first, with Kurenai following, clutching the file in her hands and anxiously asking,

"Can you tell me, what's Makino's current situation...?"

Standing in the living room, Kazuki looked down at Kurenai and spread his hands,

"Clearly, he's on the run, which is why we're here. We want to know if he's contacted you since fleeing."

"He hasn't." Kurenai quickly shook her head, "Rest assured, if Makino does come to me, I'll personally apprehend him and bring him to the police department."

"Please, have a seat." Kurenai then realized that everyone was still standing in the living room, so she stepped aside to invite them to sit.

"No need to trouble yourself; we'll be leaving soon. If necessary, we may need you to come to the police department to assist with the investigation. I hope you understand."

Kazuki didn't have time to sit down for tea.

"Captain, do we need to follow up with surveillance?"

Both Kaze and Itachi noticed that Kurenai seemed very guarded against them, and they instinctively thought Kurenai might be hiding something.

"No need."

Shaking his head, Kazuki glanced at the now-closed door and sighed, "It's all because of the Nine-Tails incident."

"Ah..."

Itachi and Kaze finally realized.

'So, the reason for her strong resistance was because of the Nine-Tails' attack?'

"Let's go. Kurenai's father was an experienced jonin in the village, but he sacrificed his life defending against the Nine-Tails. It's understandable that she holds resentment toward the Uchiha."

'Resentment? The fact that Kurenai didn't flat-out refuse them entry was already pretty good.'

"Let's go. We'll investigate the scene and see if we can find any valuable clues or information. As long as the suspect hasn't left the village, we'll catch him sooner or later."

This was a case that happened within his jurisdiction, so Kazuki had no choice but to take it seriously.

After leaving Kurenai's house, Kazuki led Kaze and Itachi straight to the crime scene.

Cases involving arguments and brawls due to drunkenness were common. The police department didn't deal with them every day, but they happened often enough.

"You two handle this."

Kazuki suddenly remembered something and handed the scene investigation over to Itachi and Kaze before quickly leaving.

Neither Kaze nor Itachi reacted much to Kazuki's departure, as both of them were the quiet types. When Kazuki was around, it was one thing, but when he left, both Kaze and Itachi focused on their work, only speaking when necessary.

While others go home for dinner when night falls, Kazuki still has to hide on rooftops, staking out. Looking at the bright moon in the sky, Kazuki glanced in the direction of the Hokage's office, smirking to himself: Must be driving them crazy.

Whether it was the Shimura clan or Asuma's room in the Daimyo's residence, Kazuki had left a trace of misleading chakra behind. Just a little misdirection was enough to have the investigators scratching their heads.

No matter how stealthy the operation, there are always traces left behind.

Even if there were no signs of a fight, at least the scent remains.

In the ninja world, the methods for tracking and investigating enemies are varied and plentiful.

Some ninjas' noses are even more sensitive than those of summoning beasts.

Knowing this, Kazuki was careful to cover his tracks and not leave behind any clues.
