Chapter 34: Chapter 34: Yagyu’s Experiment
Just as Haku disappeared, Kakashi collapsed from overusing his Sharingan.
Although in Yagyu's previous life, Kakashi was often humorously referred to by fans as a "Chakra measurement unit," the truth was far from it. Kakashi's chakra reserves were astonishing, rivaling the Senju and Uzumaki clans, who possessed Sage Body levels of vitality.
At the age of five, Kakashi was already capable of using the Multi-Shadow Clone Jutsu. In the original story, without the burden of the Sharingan, Kakashi managed to develop Purple Lightning in just a few years, achieving Kage-level power.
His massive chakra reserves allowed him to perform large-scale techniques, like an Earth Style barrier capable of encircling the entire Leaf Village. Without his naturally high chakra levels, the constant drain from his transplanted Sharingan would have killed him long ago.
Haku, unaware that his opponent had also reached their limit, focused on escaping rather than attacking Team 7. After retrieving Zabuza, Haku used the Body Flicker Jutsu to rush back to their hideout and begin treating his master.
As Haku sped through the woods, a massive shadow suddenly loomed over him. The sound of rushing water filled his ears. Turning to look, his expression beneath the mask twisted in shock.
A gigantic wave, like the hand of Poseidon, crashed down toward him.
Caught mid-Flicker, Haku had no time to dodge or even question how such a massive wave had been launched so close without him noticing. Acting on instinct, he formed a single-handed seal:
"Ice Release: Ice Rock Dome of Nothingness!"
Moisture in the air rapidly condensed into a massive ice wall. Haku shielded Zabuza in his arms and took cover behind the structure.
The enormous wave slammed into the ice wall with tremendous force. The power of Water Release lies in its weight and impact. The collision shattered the thick wall, submerging Haku and Zabuza.
Fortunately, the ice wall had absorbed most of the impact. Though carried away by the wave, Haku didn't feel any internal injuries, and Zabuza's condition hadn't worsened.
As the wave carried them along, Haku prepared to gather chakra at his feet, intending to flee as soon as the water subsided. But before he could act, a dense white mist suddenly enveloped the area, transforming it into a foggy expanse.
Haku's face turned pale beneath his mask at the sight of the familiar technique.
"Hidden Mist Jutsu!"
Could it be that the Mist Village had sent someone to capture Zabuza?
With no time to waste, Haku hastily formed seals for his Ice Release techniques to escape with Zabuza. However, before he could complete the seals, red powder appeared before his eyes.
The next second, Haku froze. His body felt as though it had been bound to a tree by vines, leaving him completely immobile.
In Haku's vision, a massive tree materialized from nowhere, its tendrils coiling around him and Zabuza like living restraints. Darkness overwhelmed his vision, and he lost consciousness without ever seeing his attacker.
The mist dissipated, revealing Yagyu standing over the unconscious Haku and Zabuza. He muttered to himself, "Blacked out, huh?"
Haku showed no signs of emitting any light, but Yagyu had anticipated this outcome and wasn't disappointed.
From his spatial inventory, Yagyu pulled out two iron chains. He securely bound the unconscious Zabuza and Haku, then slung them over his shoulders like sacks of rice. In a blink, he relocated to a secluded spot in the Land of Waves.
Placing Zabuza and Haku on the ground, Yagyu donned a mask himself. After forming seals, he summoned a shadow clone and began his experiment.
First, Yagyu removed the senbon from Zabuza's neck. His clone immediately used medical ninjutsu to treat Zabuza. Within moments, Zabuza's eyelids twitched before he groggily opened his eyes.
"Too slow, Haku—"
Before Zabuza could finish, a sharp hand chop landed on his neck, knocking him out again.
"Continue!" Yagyu commanded coldly.
The clone, its chakra levels high enough to make even Kakashi jealous, resumed treating Zabuza with basic medical jutsu.
Yagyu's father was a combat-type ninja proficient in Water Release, while his mother specialized in medical ninjutsu. In fact, Hinata and Sakura had learned their medical skills from Yagyu.
For reasons Yagyu attributed to his Sage Body and Ashura's chakra, his medical ninjutsu proved astonishingly potent, surpassing even high-level techniques like the Mystical Palm Jutsu. It made him wonder: once he mastered the Mystical Palm Jutsu, would even the most severe injuries be instantly healed?
Under the clone's treatment, Zabuza regained consciousness once more.
This time, Zabuza managed to notice Yagyu and the bound Haku beside him.
"You—"
Before he could finish his question, another swift hand chop knocked him out.
"...Continue," Yagyu instructed, his expression indifferent.
The cycle repeated: Zabuza would awaken, only to be immediately knocked unconscious. Again and again, the process continued.
After countless repetitions, Yagyu was beginning to think the experiment had failed. But then—
Swish—
A faint white light suddenly appeared on Zabuza's body. Moments later, a beam of white energy emerged, coalescing into a floating orb nearby.
Seeing this, Yagyu finally smiled with satisfaction.
So any form of victory can trigger the "loot drop" mechanism.
With his theory confirmed, Yagyu shifted his focus to Haku, employing the same cycle of treatment, awakening, and unconsciousness. However, despite repeating the process into the evening, Haku failed to emit even the faintest glimmer of light—not even the lowest white-grade.
Yagyu recognized this pattern. It was similar to his experiences with Ino and Hinata.
Over the years, Yagyu had been unable to extract the Mind Transfer Jutsu from Ino or the Byakugan from Hinata. Even Sasuke, the second-strongest in their class and someone who frequently sparred with Yagyu during exams, had only yielded one blue and one red orb.
At first, Yagyu thought his poor loot luck was to blame. But his experiments with Zabuza and Haku, combined with Sasuke's example, revealed another possibility: the drop rate had decreased.
Just as physical sparring needed to follow certain rules to achieve a high score, constant knockouts likely lowered the drop rate significantly.
Moreover, the disparity in strength between Yagyu and Haku further reduced the likelihood of valuable drops. Defeating weaker opponents like Haku wouldn't yield the same results as defeating stronger opponents like Zabuza or Kurenai.
The more Yagyu thought about it, the more convinced he became.
Determined to test a different method, Yagyu decided to stop using knockouts as his primary tactic and prepare a new approach.
