Chapter 24 – Unexpected Gain: Executioner’s Blade!
"Uh…"
Sakura and the others hadn't expected Nagi to reject them so decisively.
After a moment of reflection, even Kakashi nodded in agreement.
"Nagi's right. If you keep relying on him, you'll never grow on your own."
It made total sense.
"Only by getting stronger with your own power can you truly become strong," Sasuke added, having gleaned something from Nagi's words.
Kakashi was pleased to see his students reinvigorated. The most important thing was that they hadn't been crushed by Nagi's overwhelming display—because most people who met him were left completely shaken.
But what Kakashi didn't say was: someone like Nagi, even in the entire ninja world, was one in a million.
Nagi, of course, had no idea what they were thinking.
His focus now was reaching the Land of Waves and completing his mission.
After the two groups parted, Nagi arrived near the Land of Waves much faster—thanks to the shortcut. And this neighboring country of the Land of Fire… was dirt poor. All he saw along the way were crumbling wooden huts and deserted villages.
No doubt Gato was living it up here.
"Boatman, take me to the island in the Land of Waves," Nagi said, approaching a group of boatmen by the shore.
There was still some distance to the island, and it looked like a boat was the only option.
"Uh… Shinobi-sama!"
The boatmen immediately became nervous and respectful upon seeing him.
But they glanced nervously at one another and didn't dare move.
"S-Sir, we can't take you across."
"Oh? And why's that?" Nagi asked curiously.
First time seeing someone turn down money.
The boatmen started spilling their woes: the Land of Waves was poor to begin with, and the sea route was their only livelihood. But now Gato had made a brutal threat—anyone caught ferrying strangers would be thrown into the sea.
"Tch… how bold," Nagi muttered, nearly laughing out loud.
Gato, a mere regional thug, was this arrogant? Or was the village just letting him do whatever he wanted?
"I'll take you, kid—if the price is right."
A rough voice came from nearby.
Everyone turned to see a bandaged stranger who didn't look local.
His aura was so fierce the other boatmen instinctively moved their boats away.
"Sure. Two lives. That sound like a fair price?"
Nagi looked at the man and nearly grinned.
"Huh?"
The man hadn't expected such a bold response.
Just a kid, a Konoha genin no less, and already talking about two lives like it was nothing?
When the man didn't object, Nagi hopped aboard.
What a coincidence—he'd just been wondering how to find Momochi Zabuza. Now the guy had come to him directly.
Still, he had no intention of acting just yet. Zabuza was just a thug hired by Gato. Nothing more.
Though Nagi was curious… why wasn't the pretty kid always by Zabuza's side here today?
"Kid, ever heard that staring at people is rude?" Zabuza growled, noticing Nagi's unbothered gaze once they set off.
Why isn't this brat even a little afraid of me?
Clang!
Zabuza drew his massive blade.
"Do you know what this is, brat?" he said proudly.
He was certain the kid wouldn't recognize it.
"Isn't that the Executioner's Blade?" Nagi replied with an unimpressed look.
Just that? Didn't even move him.
"Oh?"
Zabuza was surprised. The kid actually knew?
Konoha's new generation really had seen a lot these days.
"So you know a thing or two," he muttered coldly. If Nagi recognized the blade, maybe he also knew who wielded it. In that case, better to silence him now.
"Of course. Not only do I know the weapon's name—I also know how its previous wielder died."
"Oh? How?"
Even Zabuza was intrigued. As a rogue from Kirigakure, he didn't even know that himself.
"He tried to tank a Tailed Beast Bomb head-on. Died in the blast."
Nagi's voice turned serious, and the weight of it made Zabuza feel a heavy pressure.
"What are you trying to say?"
Zabuza lifted his blade warily.
But then Nagi laughed.
"I just wanted to see if you could tank one too. I might not know Tailed Beast Bomb, but I can do something just as powerful."
In the next instant, Nagi's chakra exploded out, a wave of immense pressure engulfing the entire area.
"What the hell!?"
Zabuza's eyes bulged.
Why does this brat have such overwhelming chakra?
He didn't even try to fight—he bailed immediately, diving off the boat.
Didn't even bother taking the Executioner's Blade with him.
Better to lose a blade than your life, Zabuza understood that well.
"He actually ran?"
Nagi blinked. He'd only gotten slightly serious, and the guy had already ditched everything?
"Well, free Executioner's Blade, I guess."
He picked it up from the deck. It wasn't very useful to him, but hey—could always use it temporarily.
