Chapter 33: Chapter 33: Enrollment!
The crisp morning air carried a light chill as layers of blue mist clung to the mountains surrounding Konoha. The ninja school stood prominently near the base of the Hokage Rock, less than a thousand meters from its towering presence and just a few hundred meters from the Hokage Building. The quiet morning was alive with anticipation as parents and children gathered at the school gates for the first day of the term.
Uzumaki Raiden arrived early, accompanied by his elder sister, Kushina Uzumaki. The school gates were still closed, but teachers were already stationed at the entrance, registering the new students and organizing the first-year class lists.
"Hello, first-year, Class A: Uzumaki Raiden," one of the teachers called out as Raiden approached.
The five-year-old boy stood out immediately. His red hair shimmered in the soft morning light, and his neat attire—a white short-sleeve shirt beneath a black jacket emblazoned with the Uzumaki clan crest—added to his striking appearance. His cropped black pants and upright posture gave him an air of quiet confidence, despite his small stature.
Hearing his name, the teacher glanced up from the registration form, curiosity piqued. The boy before him, with his distinctive blue diamond-shaped mark on his forehead, was already somewhat of a legend among the faculty.
"Uzumaki Raiden? You're the one who reached the finish line during the assessment, aren't you?" the teacher asked, his excitement barely contained.
"Yes, that's me," Raiden replied with a calm smile, though he couldn't help but sense the teacher's excitement.
Word of his achievement had clearly spread, and Raiden suspected that he was now viewed as a "genius" among the school's staff. While he wasn't sure how he felt about the attention, he knew it would make navigating the school environment slightly more complicated.
"Excellent," the teacher said, handing Raiden a pen and a registration sheet. "Sign here, and once the gates open, head to Class A on the first floor."
Raiden took the pen, signed with a practiced elegance honed from years of working on sealing techniques, and handed the form back. The teacher paused for a moment, visibly impressed by the quality of Raiden's handwriting.
"Thank you," Raiden said politely before stepping aside with Kushina to wait for the gates to open.
As they stood near the entrance, Kushina turned to her brother with a smirk. "Look at you. Seems like you're already a bit of a celebrity here."
Raiden gave her a toothy grin. "Of course! Your little brother isn't just any kid. I'm in a completely different league from those other brats."
"Oh really?" Kushina teased, raising an eyebrow. "Remind me, genius, how's your chakra control going since Grandma Mito rebuilt your Yin Seal? Can you even use any ninjutsu right now?"
Raiden's grin faltered. "That's not important right now," he muttered, crossing his arms defensively.
Kushina wasn't about to let him off the hook. "You're not really a genius if you can't even pull off basic ninjutsu," she teased, ruffling his hair playfully.
Raiden ducked away, grumbling, "It's all part of the plan. I'm focusing on taijutsu, shurikenjutsu, and sealing techniques. By the time my Yin Seal is fully activated, I'll be unstoppable."
"You better be," Kushina said with a laugh. "Alright, I'll leave you to it. Try not to embarrass yourself too much on your first day." With that, she gave him a playful punch on the arm before turning to leave.
Raiden watched her go, muttering under his breath, "She really messed up my hair…"
As the crowd of new students and parents gathered, Raiden scanned the faces around him. He recognized a few, including Nara Shikadai, who gave him a friendly wave from a distance, and Hyuga Hizashi, who stood stoically among the children.
"Not a lot of kids my age," Raiden thought to himself. "This might be interesting."
His thoughts turned to the classes themselves. "If there aren't many students in my class, the teachers will have too much time to pay attention to me," he realized with a frown. "I hope they just leave me alone. I've got my own plans."
Raiden wasn't particularly keen on attending the academy. He already had access to advanced training from Mito and his own personal studies. If it weren't for Mito's insistence, he would have skipped the academy entirely.
The gates creaked open, and Raiden stretched his arms before walking in with a relaxed confidence. Around him, children were saying tearful goodbyes to their parents before stepping into the school grounds. For many, this was the start of their journey as shinobi.
For Raiden, it was merely a formality. His real training had already begun, and he knew that the academy would be just one small part of his path to greatness.
As he walked through the gates, Raiden glanced up at the Hokage Monument in the distance. Somewhere in the heart of the village, the Memorial Stone stood ready to bear the names of future heroes. He thought about the children entering the academy with him and wondered how many would survive to see the end of their journey.
"Let's see what the future holds," he muttered to himself, stepping forward into the next chapter of his life.
