Chapter 45: Chapter 45: Imminent Danger
Kushina Uzumaki dozed off in Chinya's arms, her head nestled comfortably against his chest.
Feeling Kushina's steady breathing, Chinya felt like a surge of energy had coursed through him—completely charged and weightless. He was filled with a happiness he couldn't quite put into words.
When Chinya returned to Konoha, it felt as though no time had passed at all—just the blink of an eye. He couldn't help but marvel inwardly at how fast time had flown.
The moment he stepped back into Konoha, his smile vanished, replaced by a cold, distant look that kept others at arm's length.
Several ninja guarding Konoha's gates noticed Kushina in Chinya's arms and quickly surrounded him.
"Chinya, what's going on? Why are you and Kushina Uzumaki returning from outside the village?"
With rising tensions, any ninja leaving or entering the village was required to register their departure or arrival.
Chinya swept the group with a cold glare. "Kushina was kidnapped by ninja from Kumo while in Konoha. Haven't you guys noticed yet?"
"What?!"
The guards were stunned.
What shocked them wasn't so much Kushina being taken, but the fact that someone had been abducted right under Konoha's nose.
One of the guards hurriedly set off toward the Hokage Tower, preparing to report the news to Hiruzen Sarutobi.
Unbothered by the others' questions, Chinya continued walking forward without stopping.
Seeing Chinya ignoring them, one of the ninja grew angry and shouted, "Hey, Chinya! What do you mean by not answering our questions and just walking away?!"
Without even turning around, Chinya replied coolly, "Even if I answered, what difference would it make? As Konoha's gatekeepers, you didn't know about this incident at all—I don't know whether it's incompetence or negligence on your part, but either way, I don't recall you being my superior officer."
Ignoring their reddening faces, Chinya simply kept walking.
He arrived at Mito Uzumaki's estate.
Mito Uzumaki had already returned to her estate.
When she realized Kushina hadn't come back after completing her mission, Mito had immediately sought out Hiruzen Sarutobi to inform him of Kushina's disappearance.
Hiruzen promptly dispatched the Anbu to question those two teammates of Kushina's. When they confirmed she had left earlier than expected, he understood something must have happened. Virtually all Anbu were sent out to search for Kushina.
Meanwhile, back at her estate, Mito remained anxiously worried over Kushina's safety.
Hearing movement at the door, Mito rushed to open it.
Seeing Kushina sleeping peacefully in Chinya's arms, relief washed over Mito. The heavy stone in her heart finally lifted.
Chinya said flatly, "Lady Mito, I've brought Kushina back. She's exhausted—please take her to rest in a room."
Mito carefully took the sleeping Kushina into her arms, her attention solely on Kushina's condition at first. Now, paying closer attention to Chinya, she noticed his body bore clear signs of battle—his clothes were scorched and torn in multiple places.
Mito Uzumaki asked with concern, "Chinya, are you injured?"
"I'm not hurt. I must report this incident to Hokage-sama at the Hokage Tower. Excuse me for leaving first."
Chinya bowed respectfully to Mito Uzumaki and then left.
Mito Uzumaki gazed at Chinya's retreating figure, her eyes flickering slightly.
Not far from the Hokage Tower, Chinya encountered an Anbu who suddenly appeared before him. "Chinya, the Hokage wants to see you immediately."
Chinya followed the Anbu to the Hokage Tower.
Upon arriving at the Hokage's office, both Hiruzen Sarutobi and Orochimaru were already present.
Chinya bowed and greeted, "Hokage-sama, Orochimaru-sensei."
Hiruzen walked up to face Chinya, his expression serious as he questioned, "Chinya, exactly what happened?"
Chinya recounted the entire event to Hiruzen.
Hiruzen's face darkened considerably, and Orochimaru also looked grim.
Hiruzen turned to Orochimaru and asked, "Orochimaru, what do you think about this matter?"
After a moment of contemplation, Orochimaru replied, "Regardless of anything else, one thing is certain—at least one enemy ninja has infiltrated Konoha. Otherwise, they wouldn't have abducted Kushina so easily."
Hiruzen's face grew even darker. "It looks like they're running out of patience."
Chinya continued, "Hokage-sama, I have brought back the heads of three ninja from the Cloud Village."
Chinya retrieved a scroll and handed it to Hiruzen.
Hiruzen perked up and praised, "Well done, Chinya! With their heads, our Sensor Ninjas can analyze their memories and extract valuable intelligence."
Hiruzen immediately summoned another Anbu. "Take this scroll to the Sensor Ninja for analysis," he ordered.
Chinya continued reporting, "Hokage-sama, there's something else I must report. While carrying out an operation to deal with a group of Pirates, I discovered three ninja among them.
Since I couldn't determine their identities but suspected they might be attempting to infiltrate the Land of Fire, I chose not to kill them—instead, I captured them alive."
Chinya activated the Summoning Jutsu, summoning the White Snake.
"White Snake, please release those three ninja now."
"As you command, Lord Chinya."
The White Snake opened its mouth, and after some movement in its belly, expelled three ninja onto the ground.
Unfortunately, the ninja whose spine had been severed by Chinya's sword pommel was crushed to death inside the snake due to the cramped space.
However, the other two were still alive and starting to come around.
The moment they saw Chinya, Hiruzen, and Orochimaru staring at them — especially Chinya — they shuddered in fear.
Hiruzen summoned another Anbu. "Take the dead one for memory analysis," he ordered. "The other two should be sent to the interrogation department."
Hiruzen walked over to the map on his desk and asked Chinya, "Chinya, where exactly did you encounter this group of Pirates?"
Chinya pointed to a location on the map.
As soon as Hiruzen saw where Chinya indicated, his eyes narrowed sharply.
Orochimaru's raspy voice crackled through, "It seems… Kiri is making its move as well."
The location Chinya pointed to bordered the Land of Waves, beyond which to the right lay the Land of Water.
Currently, the Land of Fire had little contact or interaction with the Land of Waves.
In contrast, the Land of Waves maintained strong diplomatic ties with the Land of Water.
Therefore, if Kiri ninja wished to land on the Land of Fire's coastline, they would first need to pass through the Land of Waves.
Hiruzen Sarutobi's face darkened further. With Kiri's involvement, four out of the Five Great Ninja Villages were now aligned against Konoha.
Once war broke out, Konoha would be forced to fight against the Cloud, Stone, Sand, and Kiri villages simultaneously.
Worse yet, it would be a war that engulfed the entire Land of Fire — one that threatened Konoha itself.
