Chapter 33: Chapter 33: A Weary Heart, Mito Uzumaki
Mito Uzumaki felt a pang of bitterness deep inside as she sensed Chinya's wariness toward her.
Over the past few years, Mito had seen how others treated Chinya—especially how he was with Kushina Uzumaki.
Mito felt a mix of relief and helplessness.
Relief because Chinya and Kushina shared such a strong bond, yet helplessness because it seemed like both Chinya and Kushina only ever had each other.
Chinya had no other friends, just as Kushina had none either.
And ever since Hiruzen Sarutobi visited the Konoha Ninja Hospital, villagers stopped openly mocking him—Chinya had even moved into a new home by then. One day, Mito gently asked him, "Chinya, do you feel like you belong to Konoha now?"
"My home will always be Konoha," Chinya replied.
But Mito could clearly tell Chinya was lying. She could also feel... his deep-rooted hostility toward Konoha.
That's when it hit her—Chinya had never stopped hating Konoha.
And who could blame him?
Because of the Uchiha Clan's persecution, he nearly died in the womb.
His parents were forced into betrayal and hunted down by Anbu until they died.
After returning to Konoha, instead of being accepted by the Uchiha Clan, he endured nothing but cold stares.
How could he not hate Konoha?
Chinya had been pretending all this time—ever since he returned to Konoha at four years old, wearing his mask nonstop, even now.
He bore burdens and hardships no child his age should ever carry.
Mito wanted to help Chinya, but she felt powerless to do so.
On one side stood her husband's clan; on the other, the village founded by her husband himself.
She longed to tell Chinya not to hate Konoha.
Yet those words never left her lips—she knew she had neither the right nor the position to say them.
Sensing the tense atmosphere, Kushina Uzumaki gently tugged on Mito's sleeve: "Grandma Mito, what's wrong?"
Mito smiled through gritted teeth: "Nothing, Kushina. I'd like to speak privately with Chinya for a moment. Is that okay?"
The innocent Kushina immediately agreed: "Of course!"
As Kushina turned to leave, Chinya suddenly grabbed her hand and addressed Mito: "Lady Mito, Orochimaru-sensei gave me quite heavy assignments today. I'll chat with Kushina briefly then take my leave."
Chinya suspected whatever Mito wanted to discuss would undoubtedly be troublesome.
He doubted there was anything truly worth discussing between them.
Mito wished for Kushina to become the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki, making their interests naturally conflicting.
Even Kushina—who usually didn't miss a thing—could tell something was off between them.
Caught in the middle, Kushina hesitated: "Chinya… Grandma Mito…"
Sighing deeply, Mito said softly: "Chinya, I'm not speaking as a member of Konoha this time—I simply wish to speak as your elder and Kushina's relative. Even that won't do?"
Chinya slightly furrowed his brows and glanced at Kushina Uzumaki.
Seeing Kushina's hesitant expression, Chinya frowned even more.
After releasing Kushina's hand, Chinya spoke, "I understand. Kushina, please wait for me outside first. I'll quickly finish talking with Lady Mito and come find you soon."
After Kushina left, Chinya turned toward Mito Uzumaki and asked, "Lady Mito, may I ask what it is you wish to discuss with me?"
Mito's voice was gentle as she replied, "Chinya, you're a member of my husband's clan—the Senju Clan—which makes me somewhat your elder."
Lowering his head slightly, Chinya responded in an indifferent tone, "Lady Mito, I don't have a surname."
Mito Uzumaki gave a bitter smile.
No surname… so he also refuses to accept his heritage as a Senju…
Shaking her head helplessly, Mito continued, "Chinya, knowing that Kushina will be in your care brings me peace of mind."
Upon hearing this, Chinya raised his head again to look at Mito.
A faint bitter smile curled the corner of Mito's lips. It seemed only Kushina Uzumaki could draw true emotion from Chinya. This further proved how important Kushina was to him.
Mito continued, "Our Uzumaki Clan nearly all possess special physiques, naturally endowed with abundant chakra and robust vitality. What I'm about to tell you now is a hidden truth about Konoha…"
Just as Mito prepared to continue, suddenly she sensed increasingly intense hostility rising from Chinya.
Although Chinya's expression remained unchanged, Mito was certain this hostility was entirely directed at herself.
She felt completely confused. If Chinya had felt hostile toward her after she revealed what she planned to say, she could understand. But now, without her having said anything yet, why had Chinya suddenly become so hostile?
Her eyes hardened.
Could it be… Chinya already knows something?
He certainly did.
First Mito mentioned the Uzumaki physical constitution, then hinted at a hidden village secret.
What Mito intended to tell him next would very likely involve the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki.
Chinya noticed Mito scrutinizing him carefully.
His heart skipped a beat—had Mito figured something out?
That shouldn't be possible. He always controlled his expressions quite well.
Suddenly shivering slightly, Chinya's face darkened.
He'd forgotten one crucial thing!
The power of the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki—the ability to sense hostility.
No wonder earlier Mito had told him there was no need to be wary of her—she'd already sensed his wariness toward her.
What a troublesome ability that was. In other words, his disguise was completely useless against Mito.
Taking a slow, deep breath, Chinya steeled himself and forced his mind to clear.
Since deception wouldn't work before Mito, there was no longer any need to pretend.
Noticing the change in Chinya's attitude, Mito Uzumaki looked him straight in the eyes and said firmly, "Chinya, you do know about the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki—and why Kushina was brought to Konoha, aren't you?"
"Mito-sama, I have no way of knowing such things."
No longer pretending, Chinya still didn't say everything outright. It was one thing for Mito Uzumaki to suspect it, but another entirely for Chinya to admit it directly.
Mito Uzumaki frowned slightly. "Yes, you claim to have no way of knowing, yet somehow you do. Then tell me, is your hostility toward me because you disapprove of Konoha's plan to make Kushina the Jinchuriki?"
Chinya replied in a mechanical tone, "Mito-sama, this is a decision made by Konoha; I have no authority to question or interfere."
Just talking to Chinya was exhausting. That kid really was impossible to deal with.
