Chapter 29: 29 - Perfect Copy
Let's start with Water Release, Chiba thought to himself. Most of the ninjas in Ame possess water chakra affinity. So let's begin with the C-rank jutsu. Water Release: Water Bullet Technique!
Chiba looked at Shiratori.
Since Shiratori was able to master medical ninjutsu, which requires extremely high chakra control, then a basic C-rank ninjutsu shouldn't be too difficult for him.
"Tiger → Ox → Tiger → Rat!"
"Remember the hand seal sequence."
Chiba overlapped his thumbs, interlaced his fingers, and slowly demonstrated the hand signs to Shiratori.
The moment Shiratori saw the beginning of the hand seals, he immediately began to imitate the technique.
"Water Release: Water Bullet Technique!"
After kneading chakra in his stomach, he expelled a large quantity of water in the form of a powerful torrent. The trunk of a tree ten meters away was struck by the water bullet.
Crater-sized holes, each as wide as a bowl, densely covered the thick tree trunk.
"Amazing!" Shiratori gasped in awe, his eyes wide with genuine excitement.
His familiar words and gaze made Chiba pause for a moment.
[Reminiscence detected: Chiba +500 points]
[Energy transferred to Choso]
[Development progress: 18%]
Chiba quickly composed himself. He said to Shiratori, "Your turn to try."
Shiratori nodded.
Cursed energy surged within him, and his hands naturally began to form the hand signs. His movements were smooth and incredibly fast, as if he had performed the same jutsu countless times before.
"Water Release: Water Bullet Technique!"
The water bullets, like bullets from a gun, bombarded the nearby tree trunk. Unable to withstand the onslaught, the tree's surface burst open with deep cracks.
A flicker of shock flashed through Chiba's eyes.
"I did it!"
Shiratori's delighted expression filled Chiba's vision.
Though he had already mentally prepared for Shiratori's extraordinary talent, he was still shaken by it.
"Chiba-nisan, I want to learn another ninjutsu."
Shiratori tugged on Chiba's sleeve.
Chiba came back to his senses, thought for a moment, then nodded. "Alright."
"Wind Release: Great Breakthrough!"
Tiger → Ox → Dog → Rabbit → Snake.
Chiba didn't slow down while forming hand seals.
A small whirlwind rose from the ground and rushed toward a distant tree trunk. The tree shook violently as it was struck by the wind. Countless leaves and broken branches swirled through the air. As the wind gradually settled, he looked toward Shiratori.
He almost couldn't wait to step forward and form the hand seals: "Wind Release: Great Breakthrough!"
It was identical to the wind jutsu Chiba had just performed.
Chiba stood frozen in place, pupils dilated, lips slightly parted. He hadn't explained any details. He hadn't slowed down his hand seals.
So how did Shiratori learn it?
No, this wasn't learning. This was copying.
He thought back to Shiratori's medical ninjutsu. He crouched seriously in front of him.
"Shiratori, who taught you medical ninjutsu?"
Shiratori didn't seem to understand why Chiba was so intense. He thought for a moment and replied honestly:
"No one taught me. I watched the medical-nin and learned it myself."
Chiba's breath caught in his throat.
Just as he had suspected, no one had ever taught Shiratori medical ninjutsu. The boy was an orphan. Who could have taught him?
His medical ninjutsu couldn't have been self-taught.
He looked at the distant, heavily damaged tree. More accurately, Shiratori's ninjutsu was being copied, not learned.
No one could learn this fast.
To verify his theory, he said to Shiratori, "Wait here for a moment."
He turned and walked toward a few other ninjas in the training field.
Shiratori watched his back and stood quietly, waiting in place. Before long, Chiba returned with three other ninjas and stopped in front of him.
A stranger among the ninjas stepped forward. After giving Shiratori a quick glance, he asked Chiba, "Shall I begin?"
Chiba nodded to Shiratori. "He's going to show you a new jutsu."
Shiratori nodded and focused his eyes on the unfamiliar ninja.
Chiba gave the ninja a signal. The ninja formed hand seals.
Bird → Snake → Monkey → Ram.
"Lightning Release: Lightning Ball!"
Several spheres of lightning floated in the air, crackling with loud static. The bright yellow light from the orbs streaked across everyone's eyes. They struck a tree in the distance, instantly charring it black.
"Shiratori, give it a try," Chiba said.
The unfamiliar Lightning Release user immediately frowned and said, "But I only demonstrated it once. I haven't even started teaching him. If he tries to perform this jutsu recklessly, he might get hur—"
"Lightning Release: Lightning Ball!"
Boom!
An identical effect.
Chiba watched as Shiratori executed it with ease, understanding flickering in his eyes.
The Lightning Release user beside him was already stunned. His gaze shifted between the scorched tree and Shiratori over and over.
"I... back then... I spent a whole year learning that..."
And this kid... mastered it after one look? It was as if the Lightning Ball had struck him instead, his spirit was left in a daze.
"Let me try!"
Another ninja stepped forward. He didn't believe it. Could this kid really learn a jutsu just by watching it once?
"Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique!"
The air instantly heated up. A roaring fireball surged from his mouth, barreling toward a tree. The tree turned to charcoal in the blink of an eye.
The Fire Release user placed his hands on his hips and stared at the boy.
Shiratori formed the hand seals.
Snake → Ram → Monkey → Boar → Horse → Tiger.
"Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique!"
BOOM.
The already-charred tree was reduced completely to ash.
Sparks still burst in the air above the ground.
The Fire Release user's legs went weak, and waves of dizziness washed over him. He barely managed to steady himself and turned stiffly to Chiba. "This kid... where did he even come from?"
Chiba pressed his lips together, his expression serious. He didn't answer the question, and instead looked to the final ninja.
"Wow! Looks like you really found yourself a prodigy, Chiba."
The Earth Release user shrugged. His attitude was better than the others, maybe because he had already accepted the reality: this kid was a genius.
Snake → Rat → Bird.
"Earth Release: Earth Flow Spears!"
Countless towering spiral spears erupted from the ground, glinting coldly at the tips. They wove together, leaving no room for escape.
The ninja looked at Shiratori with anticipation.
Shiratori skillfully formed the hand seals. And, just like before, an identical jutsu performance.
The Earth Release user held his forehead. "Ah! Geniuses really are something else!"
What took them a year, or even three, to master, this boy only needed one glance.
Chiba looked at the floor, now raised with earthen spikes.
He finally understood why Shiratori's chakra had no elemental nature. Because Shiratori could copy any chakra nature's ninjutsu.
That was the terrifying talent of Shiratori!
His gaze fell on the boy, who was still immersed in the joy of mastering new jutsu. This child probably didn't even realize just how gifted he truly was.
