Chapter 45: Snake Sage Mode
After Kuragami Uchiha saw through Ryuchi Cave's Genjutsu, Tagorihime stopped maintaining it and simply walked deeper into the cave.
Soon, two other girls dressed similarly to her arrived. The youngest-looking one, Ichikishimahime, one of Ryuchi Cave's shrine maidens, glanced at Kuragami Uchiha with mild dissatisfaction and muttered: "It's so rare for someone to come for the trial, and this is what we get? How boring."
Kuragami Uchiha wasn't bothered by her comment and simply continued following them.
As they got closer to the White Snake Sage's dwelling, remnants of petrified human limbs began appearing along the cave walls. However, Kuragami Uchiha's expression remained unchanged.
Ichikishimahime couldn't help but ask: "Aren't you curious about what these are?"
"They're just the remains of those who failed the sage trial."
Kuragami Uchiha said with a smile. "Anyone who seeks power must be prepared for failure."
"You're quite clear-headed, Kuragami-san."
Tagitsuhime, the last of the three shrine maidens, said. "I hope you succeed in the final trial. Otherwise, we'll have no choice but to savor the taste of you."
Before long, the three led Kuragami Uchiha to the deepest part of Ryuchi Cave.
Under the flickering, dim lights, a massive white snake was coiled on a throne.
This white snake wore several golden rings inscribed with various symbols, and the large dragon horns atop its head signified that it was on the path to becoming a dragon.
The three sages bowed in respect before the White Snake Sage.
"Alright, you three may leave. Let me have a good chat with Kuragami Uchiha."
The White Snake Sage said, shifting its body slightly. The movement of its scales produced a soft rustling sound.
"Yes."
The three sages nodded and left.
After a brief silence, the White Snake Sage spoke unhurriedly. "You are the first descendant of Indra to set foot here in many years."
"Indra?"
Kuragami Uchiha asked, pretending not to know. "Is that one of our Uchiha ancestors?"
"That's correct. Indra is the very origin of your Uchiha Kekkei Genkai." The White Snake Sage explained.
"So he's our first ancestor?"
Kuragami Uchiha nodded. "That makes sense. No wonder they say the sages of the three great lands have incredibly long lifespans."
"No, I did not interact much with Indra. I only know of his history."
The White Snake Sage clarified. "After all, he was the founder of Ninja Creed and one of the Sage of Six Paths' two sons."
"So we Uchiha are actually descendants of the legendary Sage of Six Paths?" Kuragami Uchiha mused.
"That is correct."
The White Snake Sage confirmed.
"I never thought I'd one day be called the descendant of a sage."
A playful expression appeared on Kuragami Uchiha's face. "But why tell me all these secrets? Has Ryuchi Cave grown restless and decided to interfere with the human world like Mount Myōboku?"
"Let me be clear, I'm nothing like Jiraiya, the only ninja in history who was controlled by his summoning beast. I won't waste my life chasing after some vague prophecy."
"No, Ryuchi Cave has never cared about the human world."
The White Snake Sage replied. "I was merely reminiscing. However, are you not curious about your ancestor's story?"
"What's there to be curious about? Human history is just the same old story repeated over and over. Do you really think people from ten thousand years ago were any different from people today?" Kuragami Uchiha said indifferently.
"Hahaha."
The White Snake Sage chuckled at his response. "In all my years, though I spend most of my time asleep, I have occasionally witnessed the endless battles between the descendants of Indra and Asura. Many of them were truly extraordinary individuals. But you... You are the most unique among them."
"Asura? The ancestor of the Senju clan?" Kuragami Uchiha raised an eyebrow.
"Yes. And the Uzumaki clan as well; they are also his descendants." The White Snake Sage added.
"So we've been mortal enemies since ancient times, huh?"
Kuragami Uchiha chuckled. "Our ancestors must've spilled each other's brains out for generations."
The White Snake Sage continued: "I have seen many come seeking the power of the sage, but you are the first one I genuinely hope will succeed. You make me curious about what kind of future the shinobi world will have under your influence."
The White Snake Sage fixed its gaze on him. "Stretch out your hand."
Kuragami Uchiha extended his left hand and removed his wrist guard.
The White Snake Sage slowly leaned forward and bit down on his wrist.
A surge of violent Nature Energy poured from the White Snake Sage's fangs into Kuragami Uchiha's body.
Kuragami Uchiha grunted, and within moments, snake scales appeared on his skin; his body began transforming, and his legs started turning to stone.
The White Snake Sage calmly watched.
Unlike Mount Myōboku, Ryuchi Cave did not care about a person's character or willpower. Nor did they have protective measures like the Sacred Oil Fountain in Mount Myōboku that could expel excess Nature Energy.
Every person who sought Sage Mode here had only one chance; Kuragami Uchiha was no exception, even if the White Snake Sage favored him.
Just as the White Snake Sage assumed he would end up as another set of bones in Ryuchi Cave, Kuragami Uchiha's tightly shut eyes suddenly snapped open.
The tomoe in his left eye spun wildly, and tears of blood flowed.
In an instant, the chaotic Chakra within him stabilized. The Nature Energy blended perfectly with his physical and spiritual energies, forming a seamless balance.
The petrification on his legs rapidly receded, the snake scales vanished, and the serpent-like markings on his face faded away. However, in the center of his Mangekyō Sharingan's three lightning-shaped tomoe, a thin vertical slit appeared, like a snake's pupil. Around his eyes, a ring of purple markings emerged.
Kuragami Uchiha wiped the blood from the corner of his eye, feeling the immense power of Sage Jutsu Chakra coursing through him. At the same time, Nature Energy also nourished his drained Mangekyou Sharingan power.
Unable to contain himself, he threw his head back and laughed.
