Chapter 342: Chapter 342: Shadows of the Underworld
"Wesley, what happened? You'd better give me an explanation."
At the top of Fisk Tower stood a bald, towering man, his massive frame resembling a giant.
He had been summoned here moments ago by his most trusted subordinate, Wesley, who claimed there was an urgent matter to discuss.
"What is the urgent issue you are talking about? Does it have anything to do with this man?"
As Kingpin spoke, his gaze landed on Wesley. However, he quickly noticed that something was off—Wesley's eyes were clouded as if he were in a trance.
Shin looked up at Kingpin, his eyes flashing with a purple glow.
Kingpin instinctively took a few steps back. Suddenly, an alarm blared from a hidden device. His expression shifted, and without hesitation, he raised his cane, firing a laser blast.
"This world actually has anti-mind control technology?!" Shin raised his hand, effortlessly blocking the laser. He was slightly surprised but quickly realized the reasoning behind it.
'Of course… with the existence of mutants in this world, there must be countermeasures for psychic abilities.'
Among mutants, there were at least eighty—if not a hundred—who possessed telepathic abilities. Given that, anyone with status and power would naturally invest in devices to prevent mind control.
Still, he hadn't expected that even the Rinnegan's Genjutsu could be thwarted by such technology.
In American comics, mind control abilities rarely bypass defenses. Magneto's helmet, for instance, granted him near-total immunity to psychic manipulation. These countermeasures were essentially a natural nemesis for telepaths.
For ordinary people, resisting mind control relied purely on sheer willpower.
Of course, there were exceptions—certain individuals who were naturally immune due to their chaotic minds.
Take Deadpool, for example. His brain was even more scrambled than the Joker's. The moment anyone tried to control him, they'd either go insane or commit suicide. His mental state was practically an infection—just as contagious as the Joker's madness.
However, Kingpin was not one of those exceptions. His resistance stemmed purely from technological protection.
Seeing his attempt fail, Kingpin didn't hesitate. With a slam of his fist on the table, a hidden mechanism activated, and the entire floor beneath him suddenly dropped.
His bulky figure plummeted through a concealed escape chute.
'He's decisive.' Shin smirked.
Kingpin was never one to fight unprepared. At the sight of an intruder with both mind-control abilities and the power to block lasers barehanded, he naturally wouldn't stick around for a direct confrontation.
His caution was well-earned.
Consider his usual enemies—Daredevil and the Punisher were manageable. But Spider-Man and the Defenders possessed extraordinary abilities and were much more troublesome.
Even the Fantastic Four and the X-Men occasionally crossed paths with him.
In the Marvel universe, the "no-kill" rule wasn't as strict as in DC. Despite being an ordinary man—albeit one with immense strength—Kingpin had survived countless encounters with superhumans. His ability to stay in power was a testament to his strategic brilliance.
As Kingpin disappeared, armed guards stormed in from all directions.
Shin let out a scoff. Without a word, he activated Kamui, phasing through the floor and descending after his target.
A group of guards stared in shock, glancing at one another in disbelief.
Meanwhile, Kingpin tumbled onto the floor below, landing in a metal chair that swiftly slid down a hidden passage. At the passage's end, a small flying vehicle awaited him.
However, just as he reached the exit and stood up from the chair, he saw Shin standing before him.
Shock and fury flashed across Kingpin's face. Without hesitation, he brandished his cane, prepared to fire another laser.
"Come here—Universal Pull!"
Shin was in no mood for further games. A powerful gravitational force yanked Kingpin forward. The man swung his massive fists in resistance, but before he could make contact, Shin raised his hand.
Dark energy swirled, engulfing Kingpin in black mist. In the blink of an eye, he vanished into the void—sealed away in the dark dimension.
Shin then activated his Munch-Munch Fruit, stripping Kingpin of all his technological devices before releasing him.
This time, when he cast his Genjutsu, it worked flawlessly.
"As expected of Kingpin… he's managed to turn crime into an empire."
Shin clicked his tongue in admiration as he flipped through the documents in Kingpin's possession.
Anyone who saw Kingpin as nothing more than a gang boss was gravely mistaken. He wasn't just the king of organized crime—he was a businessman and a capitalist. His assets might not rival Stark Industries, but compared to Hammer Industries and similar corporations, he wasn't far behind.
In reality, someone of Kingpin's stature would typically transition into a legitimate businessman or politician. After all, no self-respecting capitalist or politician would tolerate an unchecked crime lord operating at such a high level. The moment someone disrupted the system, they would be swiftly eliminated.
But this was the world of American comics—a world filled with superheroes and enhanced individuals. Compared to organized crime, it was the existence of superhumans that troubled the ruling elite the most.
In a way, Kingpin's presence was beneficial. He kept other criminals in check. Instead of targeting the wealthy and powerful, most of these criminals were content robbing banks.
At the same time, he was a prime target for superheroes. Even though the golden age of heroes had yet to fully emerge, he already had multiple enemies—Punisher, Daredevil, and more.
And it wouldn't stop there. He would inevitably clash with the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and even the Avengers.
That was what made him a perfect target.
Still, his talent was undeniable. Even criminals feared him more than the government. Ruling the American underworld—especially New York's—was no small feat.
"This guy might actually be a better leader than most politicians," Shin smirked. "If it weren't for his obsession with crime, I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up as the president of the United States."
Not that the title of "president" held much weight in comic books. Plenty of supervillains had made it to the White House before.
At that moment, Kingpin approached him, his movements eerily obedient. He handed Shin a document with both hands.
"Sir, this is the latest intelligence we gathered… including the whereabouts of the adamantium alloy you requested."
Shin's eyes gleamed.
In the Marvel universe, three metals stood above all others—Adamantium, Vibranium, and Uru metal.
Adamantium boasted absurd durability, resisting high temperatures and immense pressure. Its strength was nearly unmatched.
Vibranium, while not as indestructible, possessed unique properties—absorbing kinetic energy, redirecting force, and making it the ultimate defensive metal.
Uru metal, similar to Amazonium from the DC universe, was the best material for enchantments.
Vibranium was abundant in Wakanda, so there was no reason for Shin to waste time gathering it elsewhere—especially when it was easier to take it than to buy it.
Uru metal was exclusive to Asgard, making it nearly impossible to obtain on Earth.
But Adamantium… now that was a different story.
It was primarily found in the United States, and Shin had every intention of acquiring a substantial amount.
