Chapter 72: Chapter 72: Congratulations, You Played Yourself. Volunteering Goes Horribly Wrong
"Everyone, gather up!" Kitayama's sharp voice rang through the medical corps' compound.
Instantly, the medics stiffened.
Despite the reluctance visible in their expressions, they slowly started to make their way over. But midway there, most of them mentally accepted their fate. A bullet to the head, whether you step forward or backward, it's the same outcome.
There was no point in running from the inevitable.
Besides, the Aburame Clan might be… well, a little buggy, but they were decent people. Respectful. Quiet. Actually kind of easy to get along with once you moved past the crawling insects.
By the time the medics lined up, many of them had already convinced themselves: This won't be so bad.
Kitayama cleared her throat with practiced poise and addressed them. "We've got an important experimental project ahead of us. I expect full cooperation. Hyakusa…"
"Yes, ma'am!" Hyakusa replied loudly, standing tall. "I'll do my best to work with the Aburame Clan's shinobi!"
Kitayama blinked in surprise, staring at him for a second with a curious smile. Then, with an almost mischievous glint in her eye, she clapped her hands. "That's the spirit! As expected of a senior member, such dedication!"
"Wait… what?" Hyakusa looked completely baffled.
"Since you volunteered, your team will assist the Aburame Clan's project," Kitayama declared cheerfully.
"Hold on, Captain! That's not what you were going to say, was it?!" Hyakusa's voice cracked as he began to connect the dots.
"We already implemented the pathogen detection technique earlier, remember?" Kitayama replied nonchalantly.
"But Garou came up with a new enhancement. I was going to ask who's available to help test it."
She smiled slyly. "But since you so bravely stepped up, I'll lead the new project myself. Anyone want to join me?"
A wave of raised hands shot up like eager students in class. Only four people remained frozen, expressionless and pale.
They belonged to Hyakusa's team.
Garou, observing the scene from the side, was… speechless.
Hyakusa had clearly overthought everything and psyched himself up so much that he'd unwittingly volunteered for the more intimidating task. If he'd just kept quiet, someone else would've been picked.
"Garou! You've got to help me out here!" Hyakusa pleaded, looking desperate.
"Hyakusa-senpai, it's not that serious…" Garou gave him a half-smile.
The Aburame Clan wasn't exactly a swarm of monsters, after all.
"I've never worked with them before," Hyakusa muttered, dejected. "I have no idea how to coordinate with those kikaichū bugs!"
Garou nodded. "I get what you mean, but really, the Aburame are easy to work with. That said…"
He paused for a moment, then explained, "Their bugs have self-evolving traits. The important thing is teaching them to absorb medical chakra but not digest it. The kikaichū need to retain the chakra and release it precisely where needed."
"That's… not our job, right?"
"Exactly. That part's on the Aburame. You guys just have to supply medical chakra and tell them where it should be released."
"Huh. That doesn't sound too bad…" Hyakusa visibly relaxed.
Garou smiled but didn't mention how hard it was for the kikaichū to actually learn that technique.
"I'll accompany you for the first day."
"Really?!" Hyakusa's face lit up, gripping Garou's hands like he was clinging to a life raft.
"I'm really busy though, so this is a one-time thing." Garou let out a silent sigh. His plate was already full, but Hyakusa just looked too pitiful.
"I owe you one! I'll treat you to a meal!"
"Thanks, but really. I'm swamped." Garou wasn't brushing him off.
He was genuinely busy.
There was still more to refine in the Telescope Jutsu. Even the upgraded version of the pathogen detection technique might not meet the perfect flow scan standard he was aiming for. Which meant he needed to make it easier for others to learn. As for whether the Third Hokage would be embarrassed by his technique becoming public?
That was not his problem.
Besides, in a way, if a jutsu is passed down and used even after its creator dies, that creator continues to live on through their work.
Garou grinned at the thought as he stepped into Kitayama's office, flipping open his notebook to refine his ideas.
Meanwhile, Hyakusa was still basking in relief.
Fusho, one of his teammates, looked at him with a mix of admiration and pity, giving him a firm pat on the shoulder.
"Hyakusa."
"Yeah?"
"Wasn't this whole project started because of Garou?"
"Now that you mention it… yeah."
…
"Done!"
Garou scribbled a final note in his notebook with satisfaction.
"What is it now?" Kitayama asked, walking in and glancing at the page.
"Reconnaissance Technique using Clones."
"Shadow Clones can already scout, can't they?"
"They can, but they consume a lot of chakra. I'm working on a version using Earth Clones or Water Clones. Less chakra-intensive."
"Ah… so this ties into the Telescope Jutsu?"
"Exactly. But dragging around a crystal ball for long-range surveillance is clunky," Garou replied. "I figured integrating the surveillance into glasses might be more discreet. Combine that with a barrier technique for area monitoring, and you've got something both mobile and efficient."
He shared his idea in full.
Reconnaissance barriers weren't new.
Konoha had a massive detection barrier encircling the village, capable of sensing intruders instantly.
Smaller-scale barriers existed too, but they were often inefficient, either too small to be useful or too large and slow to deploy in the field.
On small missions, shinobi could just rely on their own senses. Large-scale missions had Byakugan or sensory ninja.
So most barrier techniques ended up gathering dust. But by combining tags, glasses, and the Telescope Jutsu into a compact, quick-deploy format, Garou hoped to change that.
This was already the second version of the project. The first didn't need such advanced combinations. Just syncing the lens with Earth Clones or Water Clones would be a strong start.
Kitayama skimmed the notes.
It flew over her head.
She hadn't been in active combat for years; her battlefield instincts had dulled.
"Oh, by the way, someone from the Aburame Clan showed up. He's just a kid. Said Lord Shibi sent him for the research collaboration."
"A kid?" Garou paused, then nodded in realization.
It had to be Shino.
Smart, inquisitive, and calm. Shino was a perfect candidate. Still in training, not yet burdened with heavy combat responsibilities.
A great choice, actually.
"You promised Hyakusa, right? He's getting nervous again."
"Got it. I'll head out now."
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah. The technique's already finalized. I just need to write up the report." Garou packed his pen and notebook, stuffing them into his pouch as he made for the door.
Kitayama watched him go, her expression stiffening slightly. She took a long breath, muttering to herself, "Just another day, don't compare yourself to a monster."
"Sensei, once the pathogen detection technique is finalized, could you help me write the documentation? I've got way too much on my plate."
"Sure!" She blurted it out instinctively, cheeks flushing red.
'Garou… did he hear that?'
"By the way, you've made a lot of progress lately too, sensei."
"Ugh, don't say it like you're the teacher and I'm the student."
"Hehehe. Alright, I'm off!" Garou waved as he closed the door behind him.
Kitayama shook her head and smiled faintly.
He probably heard it.
'Ah well… not the first time.' Her mood rebounded quickly as her thoughts drifted elsewhere.
Thanks to Garou, the entire medical division had been improving rapidly.
Once Lady Tsunade returned and saw how far they'd come, she'd probably be shocked beyond belief.
