Chapter 90: Sudden Enlightenment Through Unity With Heaven and Earth (Tianren Heyi)
On the night before departure, after finishing his cultivation, Shiyu Uchiha had not yet reached bedtime. During this idle moment, he suddenly realized that he missed home. At first, he thought of Shizhi Uchiha and Mikoto Uchiha.
His memories drifted further back. The once blurry recollections now grew vivid again as Shiyu Uchiha reminisced. He remained silent for a long time, inwardly acknowledging that he might never return home in this lifetime. Though he was confident in becoming an expert within the Ninja World, he had no confidence in rediscovering the way back.
As Shiyu Uchiha continued thinking, an involuntary tear slid from the corner of his eye—crystal-clear, carrying his longing—before finally falling to the ground. As the tear descended, it gradually lost the protection of chakra, transforming into an ice crystal. The faint sound of it lightly hitting the floor snapped Shiyu Uchiha out of his reverie.
Wanting to dispel his sadness, Shiyu Uchiha emptied his mind, shifting his focus by using his Sensor Ability to perceive the mountain scenery, thereby distracting himself.
The instinct formed through prolonged training naturally allowed him, during this perception process, to adjust his Sensor Ability according to the frequency of the cold wind, weakening the suppression caused by the wind.
Eventually, he could sense every tiny detail of the mountain scenery—a sensation he had completely overlooked until now.
Therefore, as he was about to leave, Shiyu Uchiha wished to take a good look while also keeping his mind occupied, preventing emotional weakness from pulling him back into melancholy.
Perhaps it really did prove the old saying—try hard and fail, relax and succeed—in this unintentional state, Shiyu Uchiha unknowingly synchronized his sensing with the frequency of the icy breeze outside, resonating together with heaven and earth.
Through continuous resonance with nature, Shiyu Uchiha clearly "saw" the scene where icy winds danced alongside snowflakes upon the Sacred Mountain. Suddenly, these phenomena seemed eerily similar to Sword Techniques.
Thus, numerous Sword Techniques naturally appeared in his mind. Accompanied by natural wonders, they began colliding, decomposing, and fusing again, further refining the Sword Techniques he had already created—even gradually revealing the direction for advancing his swordsmanship beyond its current level.
Unlike before, when every step was uncertain, now he had lit a lamp along the way, lighting his path ahead so he could move forward with greater stability, speed, and grace.
Meanwhile, in reality, he unconsciously unsheathed his longsword, and his body followed suit, both man and blade burning intensely and swiftly.
Under the guidance of Sword Technique, Shiyu Uchiha gradually entered the state of Unity with Heaven and Earth (Tianren Heyi). As time passed, his footwork gradually incorporated the unpredictable nature of the cold wind.
His swordplay imitated the flying trails of snowflakes amidst the icy gales.
Though following snowflake patterns, the attached chakra was of the fire nature. At first glance, this seemed extremely contradictory; yet upon closer inspection, it actually gave off a strangely harmonious feeling.
The crimson tanto traced a breathtaking arc like falling snowflakes. Yet as it swung, it occasionally unleashed blade-like flames as sharp and dazzling as ice crystals. Those blazing red-white blades hinted at terrifying destructive power, yet before erupting, they emitted no detectable energy.
As Uchiha Shiyu's sword techniques grew increasingly refined, his immersion in the unity of heaven and self deepened. He then discovered the hidden natural forces within heaven and earth. Once he sensed these energies, faint traces of them began flowing toward him.
Then, as those natural forces were drawn into Shiyu Uchiha, they coursed through the tanto in his hand and seeped into his body. In an instant, a freezing sensation surged through him, halting his sword-swinging motion. That icy interruption also broke Shiyu Uchiha out of the meditative state he'd entered through swordplay.
Natural forces are notoriously difficult to sense. However, once successfully harnessed, they can combine with one's spiritual and physical energies in a 1:1:1 ratio to form Sage Chakra, thus greatly enhancing one's strength.
This state is known as Sage Mode. As long as one's foundation isn't too weak, one can achieve strength rivaling that of an S-Rank Kage. Prime examples are Jiraiya and Kabuto Yakushi from the original story, although the spiritual successors of Asura—Hashirama Senju and Naruto Uzumaki—are not suitable references.
However, mastering Sage Mode presents several challenges:
1. The first difficulty lies in sensing natural forces for the first time. Subsequent attempts become progressively easier once initial success is achieved. Fortunately, applying external toad oil from Mount Myoboku, consuming internal slug broth from Shikkotsu Forest, or receiving intravenous serpent venom from Ryuchi Cave can all help bypass this initial obstacle effectively;
2. Secondly, one must skillfully harmonize natural forces with one's own spiritual and physical energies at a precise 1:1:1 ratio. While simple in theory, actual practice demands exceptional self-control. Even after a hundred attempts, success may remain elusive, and failure often leads to fatal consequences. Even the original series' protagonist, Naruto Uzumaki, succeeded only after multiple failures. What allowed him to keep trying was a special rod wielded by the toads of Mount Myoboku, capable of expelling excess natural energy from the body;
3. Even after successfully creating Sage Chakra, the body must possess some adaptability to this chakra type—commonly referred to as a "Sage Body." Otherwise, one would easily be overwhelmed and transformed by the natural forces. However, once successful adaptation occurs, the body remembers it, much like combining two or more chakra natures to form a bloodline trait. A clear example from the original story is the Naraka Path among the Six Paths of Pain, who utilized the sealing absorption technique called "Shinra Tensei";
Shiyu Uchiha suspected characters like Jiraiya and Minato Namikaze might originate from the Senju Clan because both managed to master Sage Techniques. However, their Sage Bodies were not fully perfected, resulting in several limitations within their Sage Mode despite its immense power.
As for Kabuto Yakushi mastering Sage Art, this likely resulted from cellular transplantation from Hashirama Senju. When the natural forces entered Shiyu Uchiha's body, he experienced extreme discomfort immediately, clearly indicating he lacked the innate talent—the Sage Spirit Qualification—required for Sage Mode.
Shiyu Uchiha realized that once his state of Unity of Heaven and Self was broken, a piercingly cold force had invaded his body. Instinctively recognizing it as Natural Forces, he concluded there hadn't been much—fortunately.
Yet it was clear he lacked the aptitude for the Immortal Body—a mythical physique said to harmonize with divine energy—otherwise his reaction wouldn't have been so severe. To save his life, Shiyu Uchiha quickly resisted the invading chill and channeled his chakra to purge that sliver of Natural Forces from his body.
