Chapter 358: Sweet Day
The morning sun streamed through the translucent curtains of the suite, bathing the room in soft golden light. Outside, the city was still slowly waking up, but inside that luxury hotel, everything seemed to move at its own pace—calmer, more precious.
Vergil and Roxanne were sitting at a large table on the private balcony, overlooking the city rooftops and a clear sky that seemed to bless that rare moment of peace. The table was covered with a hearty breakfast: fresh fruit, artisan breads, scrambled eggs, assorted pastries, and a bottle of steaming coffee.
Roxanne wore a soft robe, her hair still slightly damp from her shower, held awkwardly in place with a clip. Vergil, his shirt partially open and his expression serene, watched her between sips of coffee. She ate a sweet fruit tart with a childlike sparkle in her eyes.
"If they leave you alone with that tray," he said, resting his chin on his hand, 'I think you'll devour half the bakery in town.'
Roxanne looked at him sideways and shrugged, taking another spoonful.
"If you're going to enjoy life, it might as well be with the taste of strawberries and whipped cream."
He chuckled softly, stirring his coffee.
"At least you're more cheerful than when you woke up too lazy to even open your eyes."
"Of course," she said, licking the corner of her lips with a mischievous look. 'You left me in 'melted' mode last night. I needed some time to reconfigure the system. My legs weren't even working properly!"
Vergil raised an eyebrow, smiling slightly. "And you're already operating at full capacity again?"
"Not exactly, my uterus is sore from how hard you pounded me last night... but with these sweets, I'm already at 80%." She winked.
There was a comfortable pause. The sound of the city in the distance mingled with the soft breeze on the porch. Roxanne rested her fork and leaned her elbows on the table, gazing at the horizon.
"It's kind of strange, you know?" she said suddenly, without looking at him. "Having peace like this. Having time to... just exist. Eating well. Sleeping next to you. Laughing at silly things."
Vergil nodded slowly.
"Strange... but necessary."
She turned her face toward him, studying his expression fondly.
"You need these moments too, Vergil. Even if you don't say so. Even if you hide behind that look of yours, like you're always planning something."
He kept his gaze on her for a moment, serious. Then he gave in.
"I know," he replied, in an honest tone. 'And that's why I'm here. With you. Eating bread, drinking coffee... pretending the world outside doesn't exist.'
Roxanne smiled, reaching across the table to hold his hand.
"It's not pretending. It's just... a well-deserved break."
Vergil intertwined his fingers with hers.
"Then let's enjoy this break until the very last second."
She raised her cup in a symbolic toast, her eyes sparkling with amusement.
"To small pleasures. And to the second round of tartlets."
"You and tartlets," he murmured, laughing softly. "That's true love."
"Don't feel threatened," she said, dramatically. 'You're still my favorite... for now.'
He leaned slightly over the table, pulling her by the hand until their faces were close.
"Good to know," he murmured, brushing his lips against hers. "But if the cupcakes try anything... there will be war."
Roxanne laughed against his mouth before pulling him into a light, sweet kiss, like everything else that morning.
Life could be chaotic. The future, uncertain.
The kiss had just dissolved into a lazy smile when the ring of Vergil's cell phone broke the gentle spell of the morning.
Trriiim.
The sound cut through the air like a thin blade—discreet, but impossible to ignore.
Vergil let out a slight sigh and stretched his arm toward the chair where he had left his coat hanging. He picked up his cell phone and glanced briefly at the screen before answering, already recognizing the name before it even rang.
"Ada."
On the other end of the line, her voice was firm. She wasn't nervous — but she wasn't casual either. Ada never spoke without meaning.
"Where are you?"
Vergil kept his voice low, his eyes still on Roxanne, who now watched him silently, her hands still wrapped around her coffee cup.
"With Roxanne," he replied simply. 'In some hotel... five stars, of course. I didn't care much about the name or the location. I just wanted silence.'
There was a pause. He heard the soft sound of breathing on the other end of the line, followed by a dry, direct tone:
[Come home immediately.]
Vergil didn't answer right away. His eyes narrowed slightly, and the corner of his mouth lost its trace of a smile.
"Why?"
[Because things have changed. We have a big problem. And you'd better hear it from us than from others. It's a problem involving that thing you carry around with you everywhere.]
That last sentence carried a familiar gravity—a shadow that settled slowly but surely. It wasn't a simple summons. It was a warning.
Vergil closed his eyes for a brief moment and, with a restrained sigh, rose from his chair, moving away from the table.
"I'm on my way."
He hung up without waiting for a goodbye. Ada never waited either. She was too serious for that.
He remained silent for a few seconds, still holding his cell phone in his hand. The steam from the coffee continued to rise, indifferent to the tension in the air. "Ah... what a mess," he muttered, letting out a tired sigh.
Roxanne watched, her eyes serious but without fanfare. She knew that look in his eyes. She knew what was coming next.
"Did something happen?" she asked calmly.
Vergil nodded slowly.
"Ada wants us to go back. Now."
"Really? But we've only been together for a week!"
He looked away from her, and in that moment, there was no more room for games.
"Ada is too serious to just want to ruin our date, even though she's probably dying of jealousy."
"Damn it..." Roxanne let out a slight sigh, ran her hand through her hair, and stood up, her robe swaying gently in the morning breeze.
"Then let's go." She spoke firmly, without hesitation, her eyes fixed on his. 'If it's a problem... let's get it over with so I can enjoy my husband later.'
Vergil stared at her for another moment. Then he just nodded.
