Chapter 21: Vampire Hunters
Finishing up my work for the day, I finally arrived at home. Tomorrow's my day off.
I opened the front door and entered.
"Welcome home, Marc.”
Yuki's smile was dazzling.
“Yes, I'm home!”
“Tomorrow is your day off, right? Is there anywhere you wanna go? We can go to Akihabara. I have some books I want to buy."
She was preparing dinner as she said this.
While eating dinner, I asked Yuki.
“Don't you have to go to your parents' house? I don't know much about those relationships but you don't have to hold back, you know."
"Right now, my dad and his friends are on a luxury cruise. And I’m having fun with you, so don't worry about it."
"Oh, okay. Well, that's all right then."
After dinner, I freshened up and checked my phone while drying my hair to see if I had any incoming calls from Rick. No message was left on the voicemail, but there was an email with a coded message, warning of danger.
“Yuki. I'm gonna go call my friend in the bedroom. So, take your time."
With that said, I called Rick.
"... Rick, what's going on? You sent an encrypted message that only we can understand as a warning. What's wrong?”
"Marc... be careful. The vampire hunters are back and active.”
“I thought we made peace with them, Why is this coming up now?"
“The top management has changed. When the top management changes, the ideology and policies naturally change. It happens all the time, doesn't it? I guess ghostbusters aren't enough for the churchgoers. Let's kill the legendary monster! That's what they're saying."
“And we're the target?”
“That's right. We've already lost a couple of dependents."
* !? What the hell!*
“The dependents are not immortal. Sure, they live longer than humans, but..."
“ They are coming to Japan, too. Be careful."
“ Oh. All right, thanks for letting me know. I'll let my friends in Japan know too."
I'll let the guy from the neon sign know. Come to think of it, I didn't catch his name. I called out to Yuki in the living room.
“Yuki, I'm going out for a bit. I have something to discuss with my friends, don’t worry if I’m late.”
“Well...”
She looked at me.
“I know you're not cheating on me, so I'm not worried about that. Marc, from the look on your face...It must be dangerous. Be careful."
“Okay, I'll be careful. I'll talk to you when things calm down."
With that, I went to the place of the household. The city was still bright at night. There were many people, and among them, I was approached by that household member.
“What can I do for you today?”
“I need to talk to you. I want you to show me a place where we can talk, not in that room, and preferably with the others around so I can save time.”
“Yes, sir. I’ll call the others. They have been eager to meet the founder, and I am sure they will be pleased.”
I walked behind the man.
“By the way, I haven't got your name yet, can you tell me?”
“I'm not much of a name-dropper, but I will tell you my name for the sake of future reference. My name is Kuno Kazuya. Here’s my contact information.”
He handed me his business card. Heh. A lawyer, huh?
“Nice to meet you. Kazuya, I'm sure we'll be in touch more often from now on. I'll be counting on you.”
“Okay.”
While walking, I asked him.
“Kazuya, have you heard anything about vampire hunters?”
“I heard from my friends that the church guys are on the move."
"Well...are our friends in Japan in danger?"
Here in Japan, religion is not so important. People seem to be mainly concerned with Shintoism and Buddhism. Not many people are interested in the church.
