Chapter 25: Chapter 25: Medical Ninjas and Fish
"Hagawa," Nonō reminded him, "you must be obedient during the surgery. Do not run around or move unnecessarily."
"I understand," Hagawa nodded.
"Let's begin." Tsunade walked to the operating table and put on her gloves.
Hagawa stood to the side, watching. Although he had the soul of an adult, the scene of a body being cut open still made him uncomfortable. Fortunately, after watching for a while, he got used to it. At least he didn't throw up on the spot.
Three hours later, the surgery was over. To Hagawa, surgery in the ninja world felt like a combination of science and ninjutsu. Simply put, it was like a modern surgery from his past life, but with medical ninjutsu added to save time and enhance muscle growth.
"Hagawa, how do you feel?" Tsunade asked, taking off her mask to reveal her delicate face.
"As expected of Lady Tsunade, you easily accomplish what others cannot," Hagawa praised.
"You smooth-talking little brat," Tsunade couldn't help but smile. "That's not what I was asking."
"I learned a lot," Hagawa said truthfully.
"You have good psychological fortitude," Tsunade said, walking out. "In that respect, you're suited to be a medical ninja."
"Lady Tsunade," Inoichi, who was waiting outside, came forward.
"He's fine now," Tsunade nodded. "But if you want to read his memories, it's best to wait until tomorrow."
"Thank you, Lady Tsunade," Inoichi let out a breath of relief.
"Alright, the surgery is over. I should get back to my own business," Tsunade said with a wave. "Goodbye, everyone." Before long, she had disappeared.
Hagawa couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration. That was Tsunade for you—swift and decisive, so cool. But... when she says "business," she doesn't mean gambling, does she? It was highly likely. A phrase suddenly popped into Hagawa's mind: Although she fights, drinks, and gambles, she's still a good ninja.
Hagawa glanced at Inoichi, then followed Nonō back to her office.
"Hagawa," Nonō asked, "how is your reading of the medical books coming along?"
"I'm pretty much done with the basic ones," Hagawa replied after some thought.
"Good." Nonō took out a test paper from her drawer. "Finish this within two hours."
Hagawa's eyes lit up. Is she preparing to teach me medical ninjutsu?
"Okay." Hagawa sat down in the office chair and began the test. He finished in less than two hours. The basic medical books didn't require much understanding; rote memorization was enough.
"Not bad." Nonō nodded with satisfaction. He had only gotten two questions wrong on the entire paper. For a six-year-old child, that was as good as a perfect score.
"Learning medical ninjutsu requires extremely strong chakra control," Nonō said, putting away the test paper. "Although you've learned some at the Academy, it's far from enough."
"Then what should I do?" Hagawa asked, looking like an obedient student.
"With a fish," Nonō said softly.
Hagawa's expression turned strange as he thought of the "nun and the fish." And the woman in front of him was known as The Walking Shrine Maiden.
"Wait for me." Nonō left the office. A few minutes later, she returned. She opened a scroll, and out popped a carp.
"Come here, I'll teach you," she said, waving him over. Under her guidance, Hagawa extended his hands, and chakra flowed out. He suddenly paused as several lines of text appeared before his eyes.
[D-Rank Talent Trait: Medical Ninja]
Activation Condition: Possess three medical ninjutsu-related Traits.
Current Progress: 10%
Hagawa couldn't help but feel excited. The health bar has finally appeared! As long as it has a health bar, even a god can be killed, let alone a mere Medical Ninja Trait. Just like the D-Rank Trait [Genjutsu Genin], the condition was to learn three jutsu. Although the rank wasn't specified, it was obvious that the simplest jutsu, like D-rank or C-rank, would suffice.
Time passed, and soon it was noon. "Let's take a break and eat," Nonō said, taking out two bento boxes.
"Okay." Hagawa retracted his hands, wiping the sweat from his forehead. Although he wasn't outputting much chakra, maintaining it constantly was very taxing. No wonder learning to be a medical ninja starts with a fish.
"You bastards! Chasing me all over town for this little bit of money! It's not like I wasn't going to pay you back!"
Just then, a familiar,暴躁 voice echoed from outside the door. The voice grew closer, and Tsunade walked into the office, cursing and swearing.
"Lady Tsunade," Nonō reminded her, "please keep your voice down in the hospital."
Tsunade plopped down on the sofa, the flesh of her buttocks trembling slightly as she crossed her legs. She was wearing high-heeled sandals, her jade feet dangling in the air, revealing a row of red-painted toenails.
"Did you lose again?" Nonō asked, as if it were a common sight.
"It was just bad luck today," Tsunade pouted, looking displeased.
"..." Nonō was silent. Just today? You have bad luck every day. You're simply not suited for gambling.
"Are there any more bento boxes?" Tsunade asked, eyeing the two on the coffee table.
"Here," Hagawa said, dutifully handing her his bento box.
Tsunade was taken aback. This scene felt familiar.
"I'll go get another one," Nonō said, getting up to leave.
"You can eat it," Tsunade said, reaching out to pat Hagawa's head. "I'll wait for Nonō."
Head-pat again! Hagawa was furious. One day, I will get my revenge!
In less than a minute, Nonō returned with a bento box. "Thank you," Tsunade said, opening it and picking up her chopsticks. The bento was from the hospital cafeteria, so the taste was average, but as a ninja, she wasn't picky. On missions, they ate much worse.
"Is Hagawa already learning medical ninjutsu?" Tsunade asked casually, noticing the scroll and the carp nearby.
"Yes," Nonō explained. "His fundamentals are solid enough."
"So he's a little genius," Tsunade said, her eyes glinting with a crafty look. "Hagawa, if there's anything you don't understand, you can ask me."
"Lady Tsunade, are you trying to borrow money from me again?" Nonō asked, seeing right through her.
"I'll pay you back when I win!" Tsunade wasn't embarrassed at all about being caught.
"..." Nonō had a good temper, but even she felt a wave of helplessness. Have you ever won? She seriously doubted it.
"Can I go?" Hagawa asked, looking up.
"You're a child. You can't go to a casino," Nonō said quickly. It would be terrible if Hagawa was led astray.
Tsunade glanced at him and was suddenly reminded of Hashirama Senju—the source of her gambling habit. He had been taking her to casinos since she was a little girl.
"I have very good luck," Hagawa said. He was thinking of a saying from his past life: "Bet against Tsunade, get a villa by the sea." He really wanted to try it.
"No!" Nonō said firmly.
Under the table, Tsunade nudged Hagawa's foot with her own and gave him a look. It wasn't that she wanted to teach him how to gamble; she just wanted to use him as a luck-changing charm.
What is this childish behavior? Hagawa was stunned for a moment, then suddenly understood. Is she trying to take me with her?
