Chapter 169: Diana (E)
Miringham.
Zenith BioTech's Headquarters.
It was late at night, and inside a bright laboratory filled with white light was a figure fully immersed in her work.
She was observing some changes in the behaviour of the neurons through an electron microscope.
After observing the changes, she noted down her findings on a writing pad next to her.
'The dead neuron has shown signs of nerve activation when subjected to an electrical impulse…'
After twenty minutes, her report was finally complete.
Diana stretched her hands up in the air while being seated and looked up at the wall clock.
2:25 AM
"Earlier, she was too immersed to notice the time, but after seeing it, a wave of tiredness swept over her.
She turned around and saw that she was the only one in the laboratory.
"I figured," Diana muttered and stood up from her seat. After scanning her identity card, she left the laboratory and went to the dressing room.
She changed into her regular outfit and soon left for the elevator.
'Level 1' She pressed the button inside the elevator.
The elevator started rising up, and the meter shifted from Level 7 to Level 1.
Exiting the lift, she walked towards the exit through the main hall.
Despite the time, tens of people were there in the hall, all moving from one place to another. It was clear how busy everyone was.
'If only my team were also so enthusiastic…' Diana thought in frustration as she left the building.
The staff quarters were just a mile away from the headquarters, so there was a regular shuttle bus service.
Her bus soon arrived.
Diana entered the bus and took her regular spot beside the window, and the bus soon started.
Looking at the green trees and mountains in the background, her thoughts diverted, and she started thinking of her life in Valeyria.
It had been three and a half months since she had left her country.
As if reminded of something, she opened up her mobile and typed something.
'J…' She had just pressed the first word on her keypad when the search suggestion showed her what she wanted.
She tapped on the name 'Jin Blaker' and, in a well-practised manner, clicked on his social profile and looked for his latest comments.
"He hasn't commented for a month…" She muttered under her breath. Her face held a trace of worry and disappointment.
Diana's stop soon arrived, so she got up and left the bus. In the room, after a warm shower, she dropped onto her bed.
Her body wanted her to rest, but her chaotic thoughts made it difficult for her.
Almost two months ago, she got a message from her friend, Tania, about Jin.
When she found out that he had intended to visit her father, she was fuming with anger. It was only when Tania told her how she beat the shit out of Jin that that Diana felt satisfied.
"But why didn't he hit you?" She had asked her on the phone.
"I don't know. Maybe because I took him by surprise," Tania reasoned.
It was during that conversation that Diana's perception of Jin was questioned once again.
Being a martial artist, he wouldn't have allowed someone, especially a weak person like Tania, to take advantage of him.
She had only ruminated on this thought for a bit, when the next day she got the news about Fana's death.
She immediately called Tania to learn more about the incident. Hearing the worry Diana had for Jin, Tania just dismissed it, "Why are you worrying for that bastard? He's a playboy, just wait for the news, you'll soon find him screwing with another woman."
Tania's words at that time didn't give solace to Diana, and since then, she has been keeping regular track of Jin's activities.
Last month, when she read an article that Jin had decided to take a healing leave after finishing his past commitments, a variety of thoughts appeared in her mind.
'He's just doing a pr stunt…he'll maybe screw with more women just like Tania had said…why am I even wasting my time on him,' Along with those thoughts, there was also a minuscule voice in her head that wondered, 'Will he be fine...he'll finish with his leave soon, right?'
Right now, it was this other voice that was going rampant in her mind.
"Agh!" Diana tried to shake those thoughts away from her head, but she couldn't. She wanted to sleep but wasn't able to.
In frustration, she glanced at her mobile.
'Maybe…' A thought crossed her mind, and it grew stronger by the second. They finally overpowered her, and she grabbed her phone.
Opening the blocked contacts, she unblocked Jin's profile and stared at his profile page as if still struggling in her mind.
She finally took a deep breath and called him.
"The number you have dialled is temporarily unavailable, pleas...."
Gritting her teeth, Diana tried again.
"The number you have dialled is temporarily unavailable, please try again later…"
While a part of her felt relieved that Jin didn't pick up the call, the other part of her grew ever so worried as to why her call didn't reach him.
'Where is he...is he safe?'
Those thoughts flooded her mind. Sleep suddenly became the last thing on her mind as she pushed herself off her bed.
The next moment, she thought of someone and dialled a number.
"It should be around afternoon there, so she should pick up the phone," Diana muttered to herself.
"Hello…. Diana?" Erika's surprised voice came from the other side of the phone.
Taking a deep breath Diana answered,"Hello Erika…I'm sorry for calling out of the blue,"
"No, no, it's fine, you can call me anytime," Sensing Diana's tensed tone, Erika quickly replied and asked, "Are you doing okay? I've heard from Dylan about what had happened,"
"I'm much better now, thank you for asking. Uhmm…Erika, I called because I wanted to know about Jin…he's not been active on social media for a while now, and I called him a while back, but his phone was unreachable. Is he doing fine? Do you know anything about it?"
Hearing Diana's words filled with worry, a smile formed on Erika's face as she said, "Wait, let me ask Dylan since he's home today."
After consulting Dylan, Erika explained everything to Diana, "He's in Alkaran right now. You need not worry, as before leaving, he had told Dylan that he would be away for a few months and might not be reachable."
"Is that so? Thank you so much," Diana answered in relief after having her doubts answered.
"You're welcome," Erika thought of something and asked, "Do you want me to inform Jin through Dylan to call you when he contacts him?"
Hearing this question, Diana immediately replied, "No, that won't be necessary. I'll be hanging up then. Thank you once again for helping."
With that, the call soon came to an end.
Diana stared at the empty ceiling for a few seconds and thought over Erika's last question for a while before finally closing her eyes.
