Ch. 14
Chapter 14: White Crane Did Not Sleep.
To prepare for tomorrow’s terrorist attack.
White Crane carefully laid out the types of possible enemies, their abilities, and other key factors, unraveling the information piece by piece.
Jiang He, despite his scattered and weary state of mind, struggled to note everything down. Before long, his head was spinning.
He did not know how much time had passed.
The twilight of evening spilled across the windows, and the faint sound of snoring filled the living room.
Jiang He had slumped over on the sofa, falling into a deep sleep.
White Crane stood, adjusted his posture a little, and snapped his fingers.
“Pa.”
The bedroom door swung open. A pillow and quilt bounced out one after the other and saluted White Crane.
The pillow slid gently under the boy’s head, lifting it softly, while the quilt fell over him and tucked itself snugly.
Sensing it all in his sleep, the boy’s furrowed brow eased, and he slept more soundly.
“Really now, I’ve warned him already, yet he still has no defenses against me.”
“Too green.”
White Crane’s lips curved into a faint smile.
The younger version of himself seemed to have forgotten one thing—he was summoned as a 【Heroic Spirit】, not as a 【Puppet】.
He not only possessed memories of the future but also his own independent will and thoughts.
In this situation, once Jiang He as the Master fell asleep, with no orders given, White Crane effectively held an absolute degree of freedom.
He was equivalent to a reborn man who had traveled back from sixty years later, free to walk the world.
He could do whatever he wanted.
At that moment, White Crane walked to the front door.
When he reached out and opened it, his white hair turned black, his figure and clothes shifting in an instant.
In the blink of an eye, he had transformed from 【White Crane】 back into 【Jiang He】.
He closed the door behind him and walked to the elevator, pressing the button. Soon, with a ding, the elevator arrived, and a middle-aged woman holding a little dog came out at the same time.
“Xiao He, going out to play?”
“Mm, just heading out to buy something.”
“Come visit my house during the holidays, my little Zhi still talks about you…”
“Jiang He” exchanged pleasantries with the neighbor while eyeing the little dog sniffing him curiously. He bent down and stretched out his hand.
He said.
“Obey.”
The little dog, which had been about to bark, suddenly became docile, rubbing against his hand vigorously and licking with devotion, as if serving its master.
When the elevator reached the first floor, the dog didn’t rush out but instead stood obediently, following closely behind the neighbor.
The neighbor looked surprised. “Huh, why are you being so good today…”
“Jiang He” smiled and stepped out of the apartment building.
His steps were steady, yet his gaze was strange. His eyes swept about, never focusing on anything, carrying both nostalgia and intoxication.
He wandered leisurely like this, until he left the neighborhood and walked into a Yishengxuan Fried Chicken shop by the street.
Clerk: “Welcome.”
“One chicken fillet.”
Clerk: “Thirteen yuan.”
“Jiang He” pulled Jiang He’s phone out of his pocket, lit up the screen with practiced ease, scanned the code to pay, deleted the record in one smooth motion—
The reason for deleting the record was simply not to let Jiang He discover too quickly that he could act freely at night.
Otherwise, a single order from Jiang He would force him to remain in the room, unable to take even half a step outside.
That was the inconvenience of being a Heroic Spirit.
Of course, if Jiang He never discovered it at all, that wouldn’t be ideal either.
“Jiang He” could only exist in this world for seven days. After seven days, another “Future Jiang He” would be summoned.
As the senior, how could he not leave some obstacles for his future self?
Therefore, having it discovered only after seven days was the safest.
“Jiang He” took the bag of chicken fillets, a faint smile tugging at his lips.
So wicked, no wonder I’m me.
Holding the chicken fillets, “Jiang He” strolled the streets while savoring the food.
He stopped before a flower shop, admiring the vivid blossoms.
He passed by a kindergarten, watching young parents picking up their children.
He reached a chess-and-cards parlor, standing behind the elderly, pointing and commenting.
He looked like a carefree loafer on the street, yet also like an old man relishing life.
Except…
As he stepped out of the parlor, two boys, one fat and one thin, chuckled as they passed him by.
His extraordinary hearing picked up their hushed conversation.
“This time we got so much money…”
“Heh, your ability is too useful.”
“Of course, I’ve got a C-rank Talent, maybe I’ll get into the elite class!”
“Now that we’ve got this much money, shall we head to the usual spot?”
“Heh, let’s go!”
“By the way, be careful this time, don’t ‘break’ someone again…”
“What can I do if my physique’s too strong? They’re just too weak.”
“Take it easy, or I’ll have to clean up the mess again.”
The two boys chatted eagerly, oblivious to the icy gaze behind them.
“Jiang He” turned around, staring at their backs, slowly chewing his food.
His eyes were utterly cold, filled with loathing.
In his memory, one of the boys’ faces overlapped with that of a ruthless man in the future.
Wu Liande, a C-rank Talent 【Pillage】 awakener, who upon activation could temporarily seize one thing from his target.
From possessions when he first awakened, to later organs, energy, and even abilities.
Seven years later, he joined a terrorist organization, becoming a violent Transcendent, taking part in multiple terrorist attacks, wanted by the Security Bureau… and eventually died in a private fight.
Transcendents had exceptional memory.
Even after decades, “Jiang He” still remembered the file.
He swallowed his food.
The world sixty years earlier… was still too urbanized.
“Jiang He” stared at their backs, not chasing, not stopping, not confronting.
He only said—
“Death.”
The two boys froze suddenly. In the next instant, they turned around and bolted in terror.
They ran far, far away, until they reached a secluded alley, where they threw away the cash in their arms. Under the bewildered eyes of bystanders, they dropped to their knees with a thud, heedless of shattering their kneecaps.
They said nothing, only lifted their heads forcefully, and then—
Bowed.
Their skulls, which after body tempering should have been harder than stone, seemed to lose all strength at that moment. The instant they struck the ground, they shattered.
Blood splattered.
The alley now held two corpses frozen in worship.
Screams erupted at once.
Meanwhile, the loathing in “Jiang He’s” eyes vanished. He looked once more like an ordinary boy, leisurely wandering the streets.
Until he reached an intersection, where he suddenly stopped and stretched out his hand.
It was as though he touched an invisible barrier—at a certain boundary, his palm could not move a fraction further.
It was the same as last night, a five-hundred-meter restriction.
“Just not sure, if I gave a ‘command’ right now, would I be able to break through this five-hundred-meter limit.”
With Jiang He’s naive and gullible nature, tricking him into giving such a command would be all too easy.
“Jiang He” was not in a hurry to break through.
After all, he had plenty of time.
He turned and walked back toward the neighborhood.
……
May 20th, 6:21 a.m.
Jiang He woke from his dreams, stretching his body.
Perhaps from sheer exhaustion, or perhaps due to the growth in his physical strength, though he had slept all night on the sofa, he felt no discomfort. His sleep quality had been excellent.
Come to think of it, was the quilt on him placed by White Crane?
Warmth bloomed in Jiang He’s heart.
As expected, only he would take such good care of himself.
He lifted his head and saw White Crane lying on the sofa, playing with a phone, as if he had been that way all night.
When White Crane saw him awake, he tossed the phone over.
“Here, a message from Teacher Wei, telling you to be at school by nine this morning for the Transfer Ritual.”
“And another from Chi Zhilei, asking what time you’re leaving so you can go together.”
“Oh.”
Jiang He caught the phone, about to check the messages, when he suddenly realized something and jerked his head up.
“?? When did I add Chi Zhilei as a friend?”
White Crane answered casually: “I added her.”
