Chapter 22: Chapter 22: Biochemical Prosthetics
In the remote underground sewers of Detroit's Earth City-State, Alice was locked in combat with a group of robots.
These robots, with eerie glowing blue eyes, moved aggressively, their chainsaws whirring wildly as they tried to dismember Alice.
Unfortunately for them, their movements were sluggish and far too slow compared to Alice's agility.
Not only did they fail to land a hit on her, but several robots received heavy punches from Alice and were even kicked into the corner.
These robots, however, were built to endure. Despite Alice's repeated attacks, they showed no visible damage. Even after falling to the ground, they would crawl back up with mechanical persistence, like indestructible cockroaches.
*Bang! Bang! Bang!*
Gunshots rang out as several thugs hiding behind the robots cursed aloud:
"Damn it! Why is this damn woman so agile?"
Armed with pistols and shotguns, they had initially hoped to overwhelm Alice with sheer firepower.
But Alice's swift movements allowed her to effortlessly dodge their bullets. These thugs became nothing more than masters of "tracing human outlines."
"Boss, use the dust bomb! If we fail this mission, our lives are on the line," suggested a younger thug, handing over a metallic sphere.
"Damn it!"
The leader cursed and hurled the metal sphere with all his might.
Sensing danger, Alice retreated instantly. However, the sphere released a cloud of powder before erupting into flames, triggering a violent explosion in the underground sewer.
"That damn woman must be dead now, right?" The thug leader swallowed nervously at the sight of the sphere's devastating power, convinced Alice had been reduced to ashes.
But as the smoke cleared, Alice was still standing, though her limbs now revealed glowing metallic prosthetics, and her hair was disheveled.
The explosion hadn't seriously injured her, but it had left a significant impact.
"Damn it, she's a cyborg! No wonder she's so agile. Bring out the RPG!" the thug leader barked, grabbing a makeshift RPG launcher from a nearby crate.
Just as he was about to fire, a golden flash streaked through the air, severing his arm with surgical precision.
Even the RPG launcher was neatly sliced in two.
Before the rest of the thugs could react, flames suddenly engulfed their bodies, turning them into human torches.
"Ahhhhhh!"
The armed thugs screamed in agony.
Moments later, their ammunition ignited, resulting in a series of dazzling explosions that killed them in gruesome fashion.
The horrific fate of his comrades left the leader, now missing an arm, trembling in fear. Cold sweat poured down his face as he shouted:
"Do you know who's backing me? It's the renowned Nasdaq Corporation! If you steal their goods, you're as good as dead!"
Terrified, he could only hope that revealing his background would intimidate his adversaries.
Unfortunately for him, as soon as he finished speaking, a massive fireball struck him, detonating the ammunition on his body. His death was equally as brutal.
As for the robots, a skeletal figure wielding a massive scythe appeared out of nowhere. With one sweeping motion, it decapitated the robots, their heads sparking with blue arcs of electricity before their bodies collapsed lifelessly.
Alice looked puzzled. Who had suddenly wiped out this gang?
Her expression softened when she saw a familiar figure emerge from the shadows. A smile tugged at the corners of her lips.
"Luo Sheng!"
"Yeah."
Luo Sheng removed the helmet of his exosuit, revealing a confident smile.
However, his brow furrowed when he saw Alice's battered state.
"How did you end up like this?"
"Sorry, I thought I could defeat them easily. Besides, they've killed so many innocent people," Alice said, lowering her head apologetically.
Luo Sheng gently ruffled her golden hair, his heart aching as he inspected her body. Her advanced mechanical prosthetics were incredibly expensive—painfully so for someone as frugal as Luo Sheng.
After just one battle, she was in this state. The repair costs alone would be astronomical.
Reading his thoughts, Alice took out Luo Sheng's bounty hunter ID card.
"There's been a lot of bounty money coming in lately. It should be enough, right?"
"Wait... Are you a mind reader?" Luo Sheng asked, stunned.
Alice responded with a sweet smile.
Luo Sheng recalled a popular catchphrase from a streamer:
"Your smile, I will protect!"
He took the ID card and checked the balance, only to discover it had seven digits.
Luo Sheng couldn't help but gasp. This was the epitome of hard work paying off. With enough effort, even employees could afford luxury cars and mansions.
"This money should be enough to upgrade your exosuit," Alice said softly.
"Thank you." Luo Sheng nodded deeply, then looked at her with determination.
"Don't worry. I'll do everything in my power to help you recover your memories. No matter the obstacles, I'll overcome them for you."
Luo Sheng felt like his words were incredibly cheesy.
But Alice seemed to believe him, her lips curling into a beautiful smile.
"I trust you!"
Together, they opened the metal crates the gang had been smuggling. Inside lay a strange body—flesh and blood, but without a head. It was still functioning, as if its cells were alive and timeless.
They brought the metal crate to Jack's clinic.
When Dr. Jack saw the body, he immediately frowned.
"A biochemical prosthetic."
He then asked, "Where did you get this?"
Alice explained the situation briefly.
Luo Sheng asked, "Is there something wrong with it?"
"Very wrong. This is a pinnacle of human technology from fifty years ago. For the wealthy, it's the ultimate weapon—allowing the user to achieve immortality. This prosthetic can regenerate itself, has heightened danger perception, and offers near-unmatched survival capabilities."
"Are biochemical prosthetics superior to mechanical ones?" Luo Sheng was puzzled.
Dr. Jack chuckled.
"Your confusion is understandable. But the truth is, biological systems are superior to mechanical ones.
"The human brain, for instance, can perform up to 150 exa-operations per second, whereas the most advanced mechanical chip barely reaches one teraflop. The gap is astronomical.
"Moreover, while mechanical parts cannot self-repair, biological systems can. They adapt, evolve, and even develop unforeseen abilities. That's why life in the universe began as biology, not mechanics.
"This prosthetic grants eternal youth, longevity, and near-invulnerability. For the corrupt elites, it's priceless. Do you understand now?"
Luo Sheng's expression darkened.
"So, we're about to be hunted, aren't we?"
Dr. Jack nodded.
"Correct. The Nasdaq Corporation controls Sky City, 80% of Earth City's underground organizations, and even parts of the military and bounty hunter networks. You've stolen their treasure. Who else would they come after?"
Luo Sheng hadn't expected to provoke such a behemoth.
And so, the card world's fugitive journey seemed to be calling him...
