Chapter 166: Blessed With Knowledge 10

(Zatara POV)

Watching as my son puts on his makeshift costume, I feel an intense surge of emotions that, while conflicting, make me feel more proud than I've ever been.

When Gale and Zatanna were born, I had thought that that would be the greatest day of my life. Yet every day, every hour, every second I spent with them filled me with a more profound love than I could ever imagine.

The beginning was difficult, as having to deal with two children was straining, especially those late nights when I would come back from shows to find my wife sleeping on the kitchen table after having to change the children's diapers or calm them down during storms.

Well, my daughter was more of the second kind, as my son was always different… Even as a child, he rarely ever made a noise and seemed to try to occupy his sister's attention as best he could.

On some days when there were terrible storms or loud noises outside of the house, I would sometimes go to check on the two to make sure that they were all right, and I would find my son holding onto his sister's hand, comforting her as if he knew what he had to do.

The amount of pictures my wife had taken in those moments was innumerable, but to my folly, I was a bit suspicious. In a moment of weakness, I made sure everything was all right, and as I delved into my child's mind to make sure that there weren't any negative influences or reincarnating sorcerers, I found nothing in my boy's mind. I found peace, ironically.

I saw the child sitting in an endless field of grass, staring up at the sun. And when he saw me, he reached his hands toward me and tried to say some words that were incoherent at the time. With an intense feeling of shame, I immediately left my son's mind.

I would one day tell him about what I did, but when he was older, and when I could muster up the courage to tell him. But to my surprise, as he began to walk, read, and talk, I found that little challenged him academically. Yet, he did not develop a sense of pride, and on the days when his sister struggled, he was always there.

He was the definition of a perfect child… I could not have been more proud. However, on the day I learned that he knew he could not use magic, I was unsure of what to say. But again, he surprised me. I have fought monsters and sorcerers that only existed in myth. Yet my own son could throw me for a loop more times than they ever could.

However, while my son had not developed any latent magic potential, he had definitely developed in other ways. His body developed quicker than his sister's, and to be honest, I worry about my son becoming a womanizer in the future with his face. Sometimes I even have to use mental protection spells on my wife and daughter, but eventually, they just got used to it.

But when I look in my son's eyes, I always see respect, and on days when we would discuss magic, even when he couldn't use it, his rapt attention made me almost want to compare him to his sister. My daughter, while wonderful, is not a very patient student.

Again, I look to my son, who is hardly looking away at something I could not see, and for a moment, he frowned before seemingly looking away from whatever had his attention.

As he walked toward me, I found his movements to be the epitome of near perfection. It was almost like looking at Batman in the way he effortlessly strode across the room, never making a wasted movement.

As he stood next to me, I placed my hand on his shoulder as he looked into my eyes.

"Are you sure you want to go, son? I know it may be exciting to meet the members of the League, but it may not be the most exciting thing in the world." My son simply smiled, as if he already understood that, yet in his eyes, I could almost see an almost smug sense of satisfaction, as if he knew something that I didn't.

But I just ignored it for now. Yet, as he looked back at me, I noticed a feeling of hesitation before he nodded his head. Thankfully, I'm not trying to cross continents, as that would require more time and energy, and as I focused on the location, the words exited my lips.

".CD notgnihsaW ot su ekaT." (Take us to Washington DC.)

And as quickly as I could blink, me and my son found ourselves outside of the Hall of Justice, and thankfully, the reporter had yet to arrive. As I turned to see my son's reaction, I did feel a small bit of pride over how his eyes widened ever so slightly.

"Welcome to the Hall of Justice, my son. My comrades and their students shall be here within a couple of hours." My son, turning his attention back to me, then asked,

"It is a beautiful building. Are you sure that it's OK that I am here?" I simply placed another hand on his shoulder.

"The League invites those they trust to places like these, and you are my son, my pride and joy—well, one of them, that is, in addition to your sister and your mother. And besides, even if you cannot destroy mountains or solve world-ending criminal cases, by way of my trust, there is no issue."

"Oh yes, gotta love nepotism." That snark gets from his mother. As I lightly slap his shoulder, I find that it almost seems to hurt my hand more than it does him. As I let him into the lobby and into the main library, I summon an additional two chairs, as there were only three in the room.

He looks at me as if asking which one I want, and as I sit down, he sits down in the chair next to me.

For a few moments, we sit in silence, as if my son is contemplating something.

"If you have something to say, my son, feel free to do so. The glass on the upper side is soundproof, and I already checked for any bugs that my colleagues have left." One of my son's eyebrows then raises in almost a sense of surprise, but for a moment, he reconsiders and almost smiles.

" There is another reason I asked you to take me here, father. Now I am going to ask you not to be angry." oh no I feel as if I'm about to find out some type of terrible secret like in one of those sitcoms my wife sometimes makes me watch.

And as I give him my full attention, he takes off the gloves on one of his hands, and as he lifts his hands, I see something that sends a shock down my very soul.

Gold and blue circuitry then begin to pour throughout my son's left arm, and for a moment, I found it beautiful, and as soon as he shows me this, I am already kneeling in front of him, checking my son over with every single analysis spell that I can think of.

However, after fussing over him for a few moments, I simply grab the arm where the circuitry is glowing in a bright color.

" I wanted to tell you in private, but seeing as this would be the best time—" I then close my son's hands. And for a moment, a terrible feeling disturbs me through the heart, as I see my son and his hesitation and almost shame.

However, as I embrace him, I feel his arms wrap around mine. Slight tears then begin to fall down my face as I feel one of my many burdens lifting.

" You have magic, my son... tell me how did this happen?" as I pull away and sit back down, my son then explains his encounter with a giant tree.

" It happened on the day of your birthday, and when I fell asleep, I saw a large tree that never seemed to end. On its branches, I could see entire worlds being held, and at the tips of each branch, I saw thousands of individual realities." my eyes widen as my son may have somehow, someway, gleamed a view of the source.

It has been a rumor for thousands of years that all the magic, all mythological beings, came from a single source. And as he explains further on what happened, I find myself flabbergasted.

Yet a sense of utter joy overrides any feelings of curiosity.

" So what are you able to—no wait, if you don't wish to tell me, do not tell me." my son then seems confused as I then explain.

" Magic is a sacred thing. Our family's magic is very rare, and I can understand if you wish to keep this information to yourself. Just knowing that you have the gift has already made this day so joyous that I wish to celebrate it with your sister and your mother." my son then takes a breath as I see an invisible weight leave him.

" Thank you, father, and if I were to go into the basics, it's different from what you and Z do. So far, I've only discovered some basic aspects of it, like sensing nearby magic and reinforcing my own body." the inner magician in me is taking down notes furiously as my son then puts the glove back on his hand.

" Have you felt any pain, any side effects from this magic?" he then shakes his head, and I feel relieved as, for the years I've known my son, he never does anything without thinking it through. Unless it's messing with his sister, then that is something I always needed to worry about.

As if he could read my mind, my son smirks, and I feel like I have just been caught in an embarrassing situation. However, for a few moments, we sit in silence as I ruminate over this new information.

" Well, my son, once we get back home, I shall grant you access to my magical texts. See if you can find anything that I cannot remember off the top of my head." he then smiles as if he has gotten the greatest Christmas present he had ever seen, which makes me chuckle as, even if my son tries to hide it, I know how much he loves magic. From the smallest stage tricks to the greatest of spells, I believe my son wishes to learn them all.

And while this is inherently dangerous, as all knowledge has the possibility for risk, I see in my son's eyes a need to learn more, and as a parent, I feel afraid of what my son may do in his desperation to learn.

As I stand up, my son looks at me oddly before then doing the same, and as we embrace once more, I feel as if nothing could go wrong.

That was until I sensed a disturbance, specifically within Earth's atmosphere.

As I let go, my face grim, my son then seems worried. However, I then relax.

" My son, I must attend to something. The others shall be here within the hour." before I can teleport away, my son asks a single question.

" Do you require my assistance?" however, as I summon my staff and my hat, only one response comes to mind.

" I am not so old that I require your help just yet, my son. Now enjoy the contents of the library. This should only take a few minutes if I am correct." I then see my son relax as he sits back down. As he waves me away, I laugh slightly.

(Gale POV)

Wow, that was a lot more stressful than I thought it would be… and while it may be a bit foolish to reveal my hand so soon, I would rather them not be more suspicious if I just revealed it entirely out of the blue. It's not like I'm going to tell them everything—just enough so that I'm not seen as a liability.

I don't currently have access to any magic that allows for high-speed flight or teleportation, and to be honest, I really want to get my hands on some clones, specifically ones that act in the form of a hive mind, as I really do need to be in multiple places at once.

It'll be a lot easier to move around once I'm older, but I'm going to need to figure it out as it goes.

To be honest, though, the day didn't exactly start out great…

A Mage of Sorothustra/Troyverse Physiology (-100 CP): This perk grants you absolute control over your fertility, your attractiveness is boosted enough to at least make you an 8/10, you are perpetually clean, and you gain an ability to learn languages spoken by others through physical touch. More intense kinds of physical touch can grant you greater knowledge of languages, but we're applying a very loose definition to the phrase "more intense." If you are giving someone a massage, that is considered "more intense," as is engaging in an unarmed brawl, and, of course, dancing and other fun activities can also be considered "more intense." The other person doesn't sense anything supernatural when this occurs. You can also have hybrid children with others that inherit the best possible traits from both parents.

[0 CP Remaining… Rough]

(Present Time)

The moment I read that perk, I knew this day wasn't going to go great. Although a slight part of me was almost happy that maybe this perk would slightly nerf my good looks, given that it was only an eight out of ten. But no—under the costume, I could slightly feel my imperfections fading once more.

I will take the absolute control over my fertility, as I immediately turned that dial all the way off. As every single cultivation novel I've ever read says, if there is the possibility for a girl to date rape you, they will. Just the thought of having children I don't know about brings both a feeling of intense rage and fury that I'd never really thought about.

Well, at least now I don't have to worry about getting anyone pregnant. So unless they do some really esoteric combination of Yang and Yin—which I don't even think will work—children are now a no-go. Not to mention the ability to learn language through simply physically touching someone. It kind of reminds me of that one female hero; however, I can't remember which one.

Looking upward, I begin to see reporters starting to look downward, and as they see me, they begin taking pictures, wondering who I was. I really hope this doesn't turn into a comic book situation where some unknown entering a base causes people to fight them.

The book then begins to shine its normal golden color before surprisingly sputtering out.

[Roll Failed: Warhammer Fantasy: Warriors of Chaos: Arch-Sorcerer (-400 CP)]

(Since we're beginning to get into the plot, I'm gonna be trying to mess with the rolls a lot less. Any failed rolls will be shown as comments at the end of each chapter. And yes, you guys can complain that this is technically a nerf, as while I have been using a random number generator, I've been rolling it until he gets something he can use. But now it's entirely random. For example, before this chapter, I would roll until he gets a 100-point perk if he has 100 points. Still, the fact that most of them ended up being beauty perks still makes me laugh.)

You know what? I'm feeling really happy I missed that one. Thank you for helping me dodge a bullet, Grimoire.

The book then shuts as I grab a book from one of the nearby library shelves, and as I sit down and wait, I thank the creator for the fact that I don't have to worry about the Chaos Gods, in addition to being like Darkseid or the Light.

But for a few moments, I feel a bit of disappointment from the Grimoire, as if it was disappointed with itself, to which I then mentally float it over to myself and hold it against me.

It's OK, little guy. They can't all be winners. The mental message seems to go through, as I feel contentment from the book.

However, again, as I look upward and see the reporters taking more pictures, I wonder how many newspapers I'm going to have this masked face on.

(One Hour Later)

I'm really happy the Justice League decided to build this place with bulletproof glass, as with the number of reporters taking pictures above the library, I believe their combined weight would cause any other piece of glass to break.

Zatara hasn't returned, and I assume that must be due to battling Wotan. And while a slight part of me is worried for him, I know he can make it through.

Soon enough, I hear footsteps in the distance, and soon enough, the doors open up to reveal Red Tornado, Martian Manhunter, Green Arrow, Speedy, Aquaman, Aqualad, Robin, Batman, The Flash, and Kid Flash.

As soon as they enter, a couple of their eyes widen in surprise, and I see specifically Speedy and Robin tense and almost grab for their individual gadgets.

But a look from Batman to the two causes them to back off a bit. For a few moments, I just stare at the group, to which Kid Flash then decides to break the ice.

"Is no one going to call a perimeter breach? We kinda have a lost tourist." After saying this, Red Tornado then pipes in.

"You do not need to worry, Kid Flash. This is Solomon, a trainee under the wizard Zatara. He arrived earlier, and I, along with the others, can vouch for his presence."

Really, Dad? Out of all the names you could've picked, Solomon as a code name?

It kind of feels like an insult, as I've barely scratched the surface of the Fate magic system, but they don't need to know that. I then stand up and place the book on the nearby table.

After giving a slight bow, I introduce myself. "Greetings to all of you. As Red Tornado has graciously said, I am Solomon, student under the great wizard Zatara. I am quite new to all of this, so I shall rely on each one of you."

Aquaman seems to have the best reaction to my introduction, as he gives a slight nod in my direction, which I mostly attribute to the Shoujo Prince perk giving me the innate grace of the noble.

Batman, doing his normal bat glare, then nods as he turns to Robin, who had prepared some of his explosive throwables at me.

The Flash then blitzes in front of me and outstretches his hand.

"It's nice to meet you, Solomon. Glad to have you on our side. We can definitely use more magic users in the League. Gotta ask, though—those threads yours?" Grasping his hand, I give him a firm nod.

"Nice. I remember my first costume—I had to spend weeks sewing that thing after each battle. And then the day I met Zatara, he walks in with a destroyed suit and fixes it in seconds. Can't hold a grudge against the guy, though." Smiling under the mask, I let go of his hand as Kid Flash then introduces himself.

"Ignoring Flash's jealousy over the time he has to spend fixing his costumes. Do you really believe in this magic stuff?" I have to use every single self-control method to not break this kid's hand right now.

But trying to see it from his view, everything he has seen can be explained through science. Well, mostly everything.

"Yes, I am a believer, but you know what they say: Magic is just science that we haven't understood yet. It's nice to meet you, Kid Flash." The Flash gives me a slight wink, thanking me for not getting angry at his disciple's ignorance.

Next was Aqualad. "It is an honor to meet a fellow magic user. If you come with the recommendation of Zatara, then I shall trust your skills… for now. Call me Aqualad."

Speedy doesn't do anything, but to be honest, I myself don't really know how to handle him. From the spotty details that I could recall from watching a couple seasons of the show, I know he's a clone, but I have to get access to the original Roy Harper or somehow convince everyone that this Speedy is a clone.

Robin, however, walks over, and as he decides to hold his fist out, I meet it, and then he tries to grab my other arm and flip me over him. But already expecting this, I simply grab the arm he's attempting to flip me over with, and as he tries to take out my legs, I immediately meet his leg.

"Having fun, Robin?" The little twerp simply smirks as I let go. Knowing that this kid is going to become Nightwing in the future slightly surprises me, given the childish giddiness that I see from his body language.

"Well, it seems you know your stuff. The hold I just did would've been able to take down the Joker in a couple seconds flat. I'm Robin, but you already knew that. And the one brooding over there in the corner is Speedy." Speedy, realizing that his friend was pointing at him, scoffs.

"That's enough, Robin. Don't antagonize your allies. Solomon, Zatara has given you his recommendation. I hope you're able to live up to it." He then walks over and stands in front of me, and surprisingly enough, I find myself nearly as tall as him.

As he stretches out his hand, I meet him with a firm grip. We both say nothing. But even with his covered eyes and my mask, I have a feeling we both could tell what we were both feeling and how we looked.

As I let go, I use some of my lightning magic very lightly to check to see if he planted anything on me. And lo and behold, he did. A basic surveillance bug meant to pick up audio—no visuals—in addition to some basic things like blood pressure and body temp.

As Batman turns his attention to Flash, Aquaman, Red Tornado, and Green Arrow, three of the four sidekicks decide to make themselves comfortable.

"Quick debrief to discuss the appearance of four ice villains attacking on the same day. We shouldn't be too long." The main members of the Justice League then head over to a scanner that I assume checks their DNA and allows them to enter the Zeta-tube room.

I can feel the Grimoire shaking, and mentally checking it seems that I've gained some more points. But focusing on the area around me, I see Speedy beginning to angrily walk up to the group heading deeper into the Hall of Justice.

"That's it? This is the first step? You promised us a real look inside, not some glorified backstage pass."

If this was an anime, you'd practically be able to see the nerves on this guy's head bulging out.

If I didn't know what he was, this would seem incredibly rude. And while it is to them, I just feel that it's kind of sad, as it's simply a part of his programming subconsciously aching him on to become a member of the Justice League by any means necessary.

"Speedy, you just need to be patient—"

"What I need is respect! First, you flaunt your sidekicks out for all of those reporters outside. Next, you introduce us to someone entirely new that none of us had ever even heard about until today, who, by the way, could be a security risk…"

Angrily looking at Green Arrow, he then turns around towards the other three sidekicks before continuing.

"They're treating us like kids… no, like sidekicks. We deserve better than this."

Looking at each other in an almost confused manner, Speedy then looks to them with slight disappointment. For a moment, he turns towards me, his eyes narrowing, while I just give him a small wave, which causes him to slightly grit his teeth.

"You're playing their game? This was supposed to be the day—step one in becoming full members of the Justice League. We have worked for years to even get to this point…"

Kid Flash then pipes in, "Speedy, I thought this was step one—you know, a tour of the HQ?"

"That's the thing. This isn't even their real HQ. It's a fake—no, a tourist trap meant to keep eyes off the real base, an orbiting satellite called the Watchtower."

Everyone in the room is either looking towards Green Arrow or Speedy. Batman looks almost ready to burn Green Arrow with his eyes.

Aquaman then tries to step in, but Speedy just interrupts him with more of his encoded immaturity. Tossing his hat to the ground, he leaves, but not before berating the other three sidekicks.

Honestly, I can see where the League is coming from. Battles like these are not meant for children. You don't send child soldiers off to war unless you're very desperate.

In my previous life, my father worked in the military before he had to be discharged due to his injuries. The things he told me about what he went through haunted me throughout my entire life.

Even though it's less official, these heroes and their sidekicks are basically soldiers without an army. It's simple: the adults don't want to send their children to die.

While I'm thinking, Superman appears on the nearby monitor, talking about an explosion at Project Cadmus, before he's interrupted by Zatara.

"I require full League assistance. Wotan is attempting to use the Amulet of Aten to blot out the sun."

Looking towards my father, I see that he has sustained little to no injury, and as he looks at me, a slight smile appears on his face before turning back to Batman.

"All Leaguers, rendezvous at Zatara's coordinates. Batman out."

Turning around, he sees Robin, Aqualad, and Kid Flash.

"Stay put."

And before the three could say anything, The Flash then says, "And before you ask why you can't fight with the League, it's because you're not ready to work with this team. All of you have worked in small groups for years now, and as much as I would like to sugarcoat it, all three of you just aren't ready to work as a part of this team."

The Justice League members then leave the room as their protégés are left to stew in frustration.

"How are we supposed to learn or improve if they keep treating us like sidekicks? Like, come on?! Haaa… what do you guys think?"

Aqualad then looks down as Robin contemplates something.

"My king… I thought he trusted me…"

"Trusted us. They didn't even tell us about the fact that they have a floating orbital satellite to any of us. Hell, Speedy only knows because Green Arrow told him. What about you, new guy? Did you know?"

I nodded my head as he looked at me, exasperated.

Running over to me again, the questions then began to rapid-fire. "So wait—you've only been a student under Zatara for how long exactly?"

"A few years… and besides, he didn't really tell me. I just guessed that, and let's just say he doesn't do very well with alcohol."

Robin almost laughs at that answer, but I can feel an underlying amount of jealousy.

Before any of them could begin to ask more deadly questions, Robin then pipes in, "What exactly is Project Cadmus?"

Before any of the other two could say anything, Robin is already over at the monitor, hacking into Justice League systems, while I focus on the vibrating Grimoire.

While I feel the mental compulsion to roll, I focus my attention back on the three hacking Justice League data.

"So what exactly is the plan? You three rush in and investigate a highly secretive private company?"

Robin then smirks again.

"I mean, Batman didn't say we couldn't go investigate them. He simply said that we couldn't help them out in defeating Wotan."

I have a feeling he also meant this, but who knows with Batman, the king of prep time.

After getting the data, the three begin to leave, but before that, Aqualad turns around.

"Are you not coming with?"

"You sure you want me to come with? I am an entirely unknown figure."

Kid Flash then runs over to my side and places an arm on my shoulder.

"Well, you know how they say—keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Am I right?"

Shaking my head, I begin to walk with them, wondering how I should play this.
