Chapter 165: Blessed With Knowledge 9

(Gale POV)

Looking around the dinner table at all of us gathered together, a small smile appeared on my face. Seeing my entire family around the table is much more satisfying than I thought. It's been weeks since I've seen him and my sister, but Zatara has come home for one reason and one reason only.

It's his 40th birthday. And my sister, after only feeding her a couple of times, is convinced that I have somehow developed a superpower for it. And after she told father about it, I would assume either during one of their lessons or in between his shows. He came home about a week ago and asked if I would be willing to make him a cake. And seeing that it would only take me a few hours, I agreed. So I made the cake with my supernatural cooking perk, taking the lead on this one.

The process of making the base as well as the individual layers took a few hours, but it was a decent couple of days' work and making sure that he didn't see. It was hard as hell as the man, ironically enough—or unironically due to being a mage—is a very curious guy.

So I basically had to block off an entire section of the freezer and hope that he doesn't use anything to look through it. Mother helped me with this as she would always be keeping an eye on him to make sure he didn't find his presents as well as the birthday food.

The mood around the table is joyful, especially due to the fact that I was also forced to make the dinner. It was nothing special, just some normal Shavetta chicken with a couple of extra side dishes.

But it looks as if these people hadn't eaten in days. While my sister tried to look more composed while eating my food, her drool was ever so present.

After they finished, they had the same empty look that my sister had, but as I left the table and walked over to the freezer, I saw life return to their eyes. And after I took off the covering for the cake and placed the numbers on it and the candles, I placed it right in front of my father. The half-strawberry, half-caramel chocolate cake left the man in awe, and it definitely stroked my ego a bit.

"Happy Birthday, Dad…" The second I said this, his eyes slightly widened, and he immediately stood up and gave me a large hug, to which I returned. And as I looked over the table, I saw Mom with very slight tears in her eyes—although I understand why, as she didn't think she'd be living to see this 40th birthday.

My sister then walked over to her and hugged her as well, which then turned into a big family hug as my father telekinetically pulled them over. And for a few moments, we just enjoyed the moment before my sister's stomach started growling, and she blushed with embarrassment.

"OK, Dad, since it's your birthday, you get the first slice. However, I wouldn't recommend taking too much as this may be your last birthday if you're not careful…" While saying this, the two women in the room immediately put their silverware behind their backs and started whistling as innocently as they could.

Zatara just laughed as he sat down, and as I lit the candles, he closed his eyes for a moment. After reopening them, he looked around, and with a smile on his face, blew out the candles. After the due standard ovation, he took one slice that was half chocolate and half strawberry, and as my sister and my mother watched him put the first bite in his mouth, they immediately began cutting their slices while my father attempted to try not to become enlightened SpongeBob.

I myself then sat down and waited for them all to have their portions before taking mine. I have noticed that while my perks make me amazing at things, it has a lessened effect against me, which I assume must be due to my mental protections. I can still enjoy the food, but it isn't as orgasmic as my family are making it out to be right now.

However, I realize that they're just playing it for laughs, and after they finish the cake after only 10 minutes, I give them a small glare as all three of them look around as innocently as they can. Eventually, I just sighed with amused exasperation.

We then got to the presents, and to be honest, the theme of your parents being much tougher to find presents for continues in this life as well. I myself used a couple of months' worth of my allowance to buy him a nice pocket watch similar to the one from Assassin's Creed Unity.

It was meant as a joke, but my father smiled lightly at it, as if understanding something from the present that I didn't see. Again, he hugged me, which I returned for a moment before he went over to my sister's present, which included more top hats for him. Ironically enough, the man can never have enough top hats.

And as my mother walked over to get her present, my father looked worried for a moment before I placed a hand on his shoulder and gave him a nod, which seemed to lighten the mood. The man looked ready to burst into tears seeing my mother walking unaided and as healthy as she was before she got the cancer.

He patted me on the back as she came back with a large camera, and all of us, understanding the message, gathered together in the family room. After my mother activated the camera, she ran to be beside my father, to which he got off the chair he was sitting on and had her sit down while holding me and my sister by the shoulders.

And after the picture was printed out, she immediately placed it in a frame and gave it to him, which he then placed in his top hat. This caused all of us to just stare at him while he just shrugged his shoulders.

After that, we all just laughed at him, and soon enough, my father took my mother into their bedroom. After giving me a small wink, he closed the door and then locked it with a spell. My sister seemed slightly confused, but she was also 14 like I was, so I just ruffled her hair a bit and went to go help her with her homework like I usually do.

Currently, it's halfway through June, and I assume by now Superboy is in the process of being created. But sadly, as I don't have any means to travel across the country, and I can't really ask my father to take me to Washington DC for no reason, I'll just have to wait as he was planning to head to the Hall of Justice to welcome the sidekicks to the next step.

As I stared behind me while I helped my sister with her algebra homework, I saw the book watching over us. And for a while now, I just enjoyed its presence. However, again, the beauty perks are becoming a bit annoying as I've started to have a bit of a reputation in school.

I'd rather not even mention the titles people have come up with for me, as they're about as cringe as those anime high school drama names. To be honest, the staff has wised up to some of the problems I'm causing and have placed me in classes with all guys.

"You alright, G? You've been staring at nothing for a couple minutes now." Shaking my head for a moment, I just smiled and returned my attention to the work.

"Just thinking about how you haven't managed to turn me into a frog over the past couple years now." She then groaned in frustration.

"It was one time, and it only lasted for five minutes!!! And don't think I don't remember you trying to convince me to kiss you to turn you back." And while she was annoyed, she then smiled and began to chuckle. But the mood then turned a bit more somber as she gave me a small hug.

"Thanks, bro."

"For what?" The question was as late as I could make it as my sister then stared downward towards the floor.

"For being there. For me. For Mom. For Dad. To be honest, I feel like garbage for not being around when Mom was recovering. I just didn't want to see—" I've turned her chair around to stare directly at me.

"It's OK. You have your duties, and since I don't have the same advantages, it opens up other avenues. And while I did miss you two, someone had to stay behind to look after her. And since I can't do what you do, it was just a logical choice. I don't feel bad. Besides, I'm definitely the better-looking sibling, so that must've been my sacrifice." She then looked at me in utter and complete annoyance, but there was nothing behind it.

"When did my brother become so vain? I think having all those girls asking you if they can give you their numbers is having an effect on you. I wonder if I should go talk to them about it…" I just turned her chair around to look back at her homework, and we just made small talk for the next few hours while I was thankful that my father placed the soundproofing spell in the room.

The book just added the points, and while I could hear this, it wasn't something I wanted to focus on.

But I do admit, I have been stagnating as of late. It's mostly just due to the lack of knowledge I hold. Everything I've done is based on memory and my own limited creativity.

Finishing up helping my own sister, she placed all of the sheets in her folder before giving me a small hug as we both headed to our own respective rooms. I do admit after all of this time, I am slightly afraid of my sister joining that Young Justice crew.

I can't help it. I've been around them for over 14 years now. It's hard not to be attached, especially with a family that actively accepts magic. In fact, it's one of the things I talk to my father about a lot. And unlike those edgier stories which would have the father be disappointed in not having potential or not even wishing to talk about magic, he enjoys doing it.

And while he hasn't had much time as of late, I still look back on all of those days I would just spend with him in the family room just talking about what it's like to use magic.

To be honest, sometimes it got so bad that my mother had to physically separate us and play the straight woman in the scenario.

Looking back on those times causes a small smile to appear on my face.

And during the night, I continue my routine of practicing reinforcement and structural analysis, displacement, my lightning magic, and a decent amount of other things. Let it be known I'm no Batman or Lady Shiva, but I have been studying up on martial arts as well as various weapons for years now.

Thankfully, my father let me borrow his collection, and when he asked why I wanted these things to practice with, I simply told him the truth: that I wanted to be prepared given the life he now lived. And thankfully, he didn't ask any more questions as I think he understood. In fact, he looked proud of me for taking the initiative to prepare myself.

Thankfully, he also managed to put some slight enchantments on my training weapons that if they ever hit me, they would simply bounce off. To be honest, this feels similar to having a large clan backing you up in one of those cultivation stories with resources and stuff.

Half a month left…

Staring at the book as it glows in yellowish energy, it seems more charged up than it's ever been. The shaking has become very noticeable, and as I walk over to it, I grab the side of the book and open it.

[Rolling]

My hands are slightly shaking due to nervousness, wondering if maybe—just maybe—I can get something to enhance my potential at least physically and magically. I've long since tempered my expectations from this book, but I do admit any boosters would be helpful.

The book then opens, but instead of showering me in a golden light, the entire room goes up in a flash of white before I find myself standing before a large, never-ending white tree.

The space around us is covered in a pinkish-red hue as platforms appear and then disappear entirely at random—things floating in the air with no regard to the laws of physics. In the middle of everything, a large and ever-expanding tree stands before me.

The tree itself is seemingly the size of a large skyscraper; however, I could feel that this isn't it and that this is only what I could comprehend at this current moment.

At the tips of the tree's branches, I saw small bubbles. And even with my enhanced eyesight, I could barely gleam anything inside of them. But I saw what looked to be teenage girls fighting large mechanical beasts, and in another, I saw two twins fighting against a woman who was seemingly using reddish-black cubes.

My confusion lasts for only a minute before something unexpected occurs, as when I blink my eyes for a split second, one of the branches extends towards me and stabs me through the chest.

I look in the center of my chest and see a yellowish energy beginning to spread throughout my body, almost cocooning me. And as I try to say anything, I find my voice to be unavailable. But soon enough, I am enveloped by a whitish-gold light.

In the cocoon, thousands upon thousands of needles begin to pierce my skin. Yet while I do feel a buzzing and a burning feeling, it's like I am now filled with energy. And as I try to hold onto my consciousness, I see the tree outside of the cocoon glowing ever brighter. And for a moment, behind the tree, I see multiple figures floating in the air behind it, all staring down at me with eyes that pierced my very soul.

I found no words to say as the energy spread across my entire body, filling me with more strength than I have ever known, my mind and body more in tune yet stronger than ever.

Soon enough, cracks begin to form in the cocoon, and as my fist meets the outside of it, I fall forward onto the ever-changing ground.

And as I look upwards, I find the tree missing, those goddess-like figures gone, and all I see is the window looking out onto the night sky.

As I look at my left hand and make a fist, I feel more strength filling it than I could ever know—or that I should have known. Yet, thankfully, I could feel my control perks beginning to help me in learning to adjust to this new level of strength.

Taking a step, I feel the ground beginning to slightly indent before I take my foot off. Trying again, I take another step, and as I do not feel any dents being formed, I begin to walk circles around my room.

After around 10 circles, I stop. And as I take a moment, I begin to try to use my magic circuits, but now, instead of a bluish-green or bluish-gold, it's entirely white and gold. As I focus on using projection, I create a small glass marble that I often used for magic and strength control.

As I hold it in my hand, I make a fist, trying to focus on not cracking the glass. For five minutes, I increase the number of marbles I'm holding in my hand, but after filling my hands with seven marbles each, I find that I'm able to control my strength enough to not crack them.

Taking a breath, I enjoy the feeling of this strength, and as I take a look outside, I find that everything seems slower, but that only lasts for a moment as everything then resumes at normal speed.

Shaking my head, I question if this is some kind of speed-based enhancement as well as a power-based enhancement. Is this an entirely soul-based increase, or is it something else?

As I return my focus to the book, I see what I have just received.

Honkai Impact 3rd/Ether Anchor: (-600 CP):

Maybe it is a quirk of fate, or maybe you have actively interfered with bubble universes before, but the Ether Anchor has been sealed into your body, empowering you to great heights. You have a body that has reached the essence of perfection, making you extremely developed in a physical sense. You have a highly superhuman body, enough to casually toss around 18-wheeler trucks, survive attacks of a similar level, and move at extremely high, yet subsonic, speeds. You also have a limitless amount of physical stamina and do not require sustenance, breathing, or sleep.

You do not excrete waste, either. As a side effect of your developed physicality, you are also extremely good-looking. You also have an extremely high resistance to all supernatural energies, with all unwanted supernatural effects reducing to 1/100th of their original effect in your vicinity.

You also have an extremely high affinity for combat, learning and mastering combat techniques in the blink of an eye (figuratively, at least). Your talent in combat is great enough that, if you can figure out the basics behind a technique, you can essentially reverse-engineer someone's fighting style and master it to the same extent as them (or to an even higher extent, with a bit of training) after fighting them for a few minutes.

And you have a similar affinity with all supernatural energies at your current disposal, with all of your energy pools being linked together into one massive pool that can be used for all of your energy-based abilities. Finally, any and all abilities you have that have cooldowns can have their cooldown cut in half per combat action taken, allowing you to near-instantly regain use of abilities that can only be used once per decade by just slashing and stabbing at the air a few times.

This is a Capstone Booster, meaning that the capstone perks of other Origins are boosted with this perk, with the specific boosts being noted alongside the perks.

[800 CP Remaining]

Am I cursed? No seriously, is this some kind of trend? Someone has to be messing with me here.

(Author Laughing His Ass Off Seeing This Roll)

I don't know who you are. I don't know where you are. But I'm going to find you, and while I do not have a particular set of skills, I will find you.

Jokes aside, however, this is amazing. So many future issues have been fixed all at once. Focusing again on using my lightning magic, I find that what was once my mana heart has now connected itself to my very soul, thus increasing its potency and potential by an almost incalculable degree.

The way I use the magic is the same. The triggers are all the same, so while they all come from the same pool now, I simply have to learn how to access different sources.

The fact that I'll eventually be able to combine multiple types of magic into one has me salivating. And thank the creator that I finally gained a physical enhancement that isn't just a peak human body. My knowledge of Honkai Impact is limited, especially given the convoluted multiple timelines and bubble realities, but I can definitely appreciate this level of strength in a perk.

But then I walk over to the mirror that I had placed in my room and find, yet again, that my looks have improved.

In an almost humorous way, when I access my magic, my eyes seem to have a type of golden outline behind them. It was purely aesthetic, but I do admit it looked cool—even if it made me look like a bit of a person suffering from eighth grade syndrome.

Not to mention the increase in defense from supernatural energies. However, I wonder how that is defined, as while I am certain that it includes nearly all types of magic, does it include things like lasers or more scientific-based weaponry?

Taking off my shirt, I found that the individual imperfections had faded away. The definitions of my individual muscles were much more clear, yet it didn't make me look unhealthy. And yet again, I hope to get some illusion magic in the future to cover this up. But in a sad way, a small part of me wanted to do the opposite, but I blame that on the vanity I have developed over time.

Speaking of which, that actually reminds me—I really should look into covering this up, as actual gods exist, and I don't think Gods and Goddesses of beauty would appreciate competition.

Eventually, I'm going to become some type of beauty SCP memetic hazard. And while I slightly glared at the book, which was again shaking, this time I could feel an almost humorous contentment, like it was lightly laughing at me.

But as I turned towards it, it stopped. Placing my head in my hands while sitting down on the bed, I simply gave it the mental command to continue.

[Rolling…HEHE]

Marvel: What If…?/What Is This?: (-200 CP):

It shouldn't be possible, but here you are! You have a knack for passing beneath the notice of those around you. While this perk does enhance your ability to sneak around, its real power is against supernatural forms of detection. Divination spells or strange spider-senses would find no purchase on you should you wish to remain hidden. Even the precognition of divine beings would fall short, letting you pass undetected. And unlike Ascended Ultron, you didn't have to become the most powerful being in the multiverse to do it.

[600 CP Remaining]

Divination and future-reading protection? Yoink. And most importantly, not another damn beauty perk!

[Rolling]

Fate: Witch on the Holy Night/Bespoke Facade: (-100 CP): Remember that other walk-in closet? While this one is no less fancy, it tends a little more to haute culture and sophistication than what's up and coming now. The outfits here, while no less stylish and tailored to you precisely, are more geared towards presenting a certain mood with your appearance. Sophistication, menace, demureness—so striking is the cut and the colour you'll be making a strong statement when you show up in town with one of these. As a little bonus, there's a collection of Mystic Eye Killers too: (Stylish) Glasses with the power to restrain the power of eye-based magic such as Mystic Eyes, and protect oneself from those of others if they depend on eye contact.

[500 CP Remaining]

In that moment, I felt I now had access to an entire closet worth of amazing quality suits as well as women's dresses? Well, at least I wanted to go hunting down for a suit. And I finally have a Mystic artifact to study. And as I pull out one of the Mystic Eye Killers, I placed them on my eyes and find that they have absolutely no effect because I don't have magical eyes.

But having protection against eye contact-based abilities will be a boon for future artifact creation.

The book is being very good to me today after that little kerfuffle on that first perk. But I have a feeling these are just preparations.

[Rolling]

Black Clover/Mana Control: (-200 CP): The ability to control mana is a gift that many mages eventually learn in their lives. This begins with mana skin—the ability to coat their bodies with mana to protect from both environmental and other such effects, for example, the heat of lava—and enhance the mage's physical attributes. The greater the control, the greater the effect. A more advanced form of mana control is called mana zone—the ability to manipulate mana in an area around the user. Most users utilize mana zone to gather the mana to them to enhance the range, size, and power of their spells and/or mana skin and reinforcement magic. But mana zone can also be used to increase the sensitivity to the mana around them to increase their reaction time and to sense magical attacks around them. You start at the level of a Magic Knight Captain in terms of mana control and mana zone, able to cast a spell in the middle of another and utilize the mana around you to either help yourself or hinder your opponents.

[300 CP Remaining]

In that moment, the normal golden light released itself from the book and entered my heart specifically, and I felt my energy change. What was once rigid is now malleable, but not so much that I can gain other affinities—just enough that I could spread my mana around my body. The sense that came with it has expanded to the point where I could learn to control the nearby magical energies.

However, this has confirmed a theory of mine: that magic… pure, magical energy exists everywhere. However, it requires certain bloodlines to be able to use it in this universe.

As I try to control the mana around me, I felt a field spread around me like a large square box. And as I began to pull the power towards me, I felt it enhancing every part of my being. Lightning then began to course inside the box as I began to feel myself getting faster and faster, my perception faster and faster….

My hands began to practically glow with electricity. However, as soon as the box hit my room door, I stopped and tried to pull it in, trying to calm myself down from this euphoric feeling of power.

Taking a breath, I stood in the middle of my room and felt like I had just received magic for the first time. It's almost like a drug at this point, yet I had never felt so good.

I still had 300 points remaining. Let's see what we can pull out during the victory lap.

[Rolling…Happiness]

… Thanks.

Jujitsu Kaisen/Broken Seal: (-200 CP): Sometimes, there comes along an opponent who cannot be defeated through normal means. One who stands so far above others that he's quite literally untouchable.

When such an individual comes along, there are often only two methods to deal with them: to find someone as strong or stronger than them to take them down, or to seal them away. The latter option was the method of choice used by Kenjaku during the Shibuya Incident to deal with Satoru Gojo, the greatest threat to his plans.

While you're not totally immune to such effects, with this perk you'll find that attempts to seal, imprison, or otherwise cause you long-term incapacitation without killing you are much less effective than normal. Weaker attempts to take you down in such manners fail outright, while even stronger attempts are far more temporary than they should be. Perhaps your allies find just the tools or techniques needed to set you free, or maybe the bonds holding you conveniently begin to weaken over time. Whatever the case, you'll find that even the very strongest of seals can't hold you for long—it's never a matter of if you'll escape, but when.

[100 CP Remaining]

I then proceeded to bow to the book because this has been one of my greatest fears ever since arriving in this universe. Because while I can't be reality-warped, my mind or soul affected, I could still be sealed forever. But now there will always be a means to escape. The fact that this is only 200 points is criminal, but I shall not bite the hand that feeds me… yoink.

One last time for the night. I feel mentally exhausted, but that's probably due to being exposed to whatever that tree was. My body still has to physically and mentally adjust to the changes that have happened to not only my body and mind but my soul.

[Rolling…Do Not Bow..I Am Here For You..]

Greek Mythology/Face that Launched a Thousand Ships: (-100 CP): Let's be honest. Greek legends are filled with overly attractive people. And, now, so are you, to the point of rivaling Helen of Troy. Don't worry, fiat backing prevents Aphrodite from getting jealous of you, unless a drawback is taken.

[0 CP Remaining]

I am so happy I will be able to take out my anger soon enough… I really hope I get a pocket dimension… Or at least teleportation.

(New York City/July 4, 12:00 PM)

Standing in front of the mirror, I wear my makeshift costume even though it's just one of the suits I got from my good grimoire combined with a few touches that I spent working on it yesterday.

And as I see my father waiting to teleport us both to the Hall of Justice, one thought echoes through my mind.

Today is the day.

(OK boys and girls the plot is beginning. I had originally intended to do the whole hall of justice sequence in this chapter, but the length kind of got away from me and I realize I'm going to need to make another chapter That and I'm kind of lost a bit on how to proceed after the whole Cadmus thing. And boys and girls, I don't even know what to say at this point this man's luck fluctuates more than the damn stock market. Hell, even I admit, I'm rolling until he gets something he can use and this is what he gets. But hey, at least he doesn't have to worry about Aphrodite coming at him.)
