Chapter 13: Chapter 13: How to Respond to This
Bai Chutong looked up and saw Ye Yan standing there, asking somewhat proudly, "Mr. Fu, this won't disturb you, will it?"
"No."
Bai Chutong tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear and smiled as she shook her phone, "Then I'll contact you by phone."
Her tone was ambiguous, as if the two had privately agreed on something.
Fu Xingzhou glanced at Ye Yan and saw her standing with her hands in the pockets of her white coat, eyes downcast in an indifferent expression.
Ha, truly a magnanimously-minded wife indeed.
After a brief silence, Director Bi stepped forward to discuss the examination results with Fu Xingzhou and Fu Wei Jun.
Having set the discharge date, Director Bi left for another ward.
Bai Chutong caught up to Ye Yan from behind and asked seemingly casually, "Dr. Ye, you've been in the VIP section for so long, haven't you picked a wealthy husband for yourself yet?"
Anyone admitted to this ward could secure a comfortable life for the rest of their days, even if just as their secret lover.
"I came here to work, not to look for a match."
"You were in charge of V8 before, what do you think of Mr. Fu? I heard he's not married yet, but he's not short of scandals. Though with men, as long as they're not wed, a little fun on the side doesn't really hurt."
"Do you like him?" Ye Yan suddenly stopped in her tracks.
"Who wouldn't like such a man? Dr. Ye, don't tell me you have no thoughts about him?" Bai Chutong crossed her arms leisurely, "We can compete fairly."
"I have no intention of competing with you. If you like him, go after him, I wish you success." Having said that, Ye Yan ignored Bai Chutong and didn't notice Fu Xingzhou, who had just returned from smoking in the stairwell.
The man watched her intently, then nonchalantly pulled out a wet wipe to clean his fingers which had just held a cigarette.

"Come to the conference room." Ye Yan hadn't even entered her office when a message popped up on her phone.
She wanted to pretend she hadn't seen it, but it seemed the other side guessed her thoughts, "Do I need to come and invite you myself?"
Ye Yan took a deep breath and put her phone back in her pocket.
Outside the meeting room stood two of Fu Xingzhou's bodyguards, who nodded and saluted her as she approached.
Not many people knew about her marriage to Fu Xingzhou. His fair-weather friends, though aware, didn't take her seriously, believing Fu Xingzhou wasn't serious either.
However, the bodyguards were quite respectful and polite towards her.
Ye Yan pushed open the door to find Fu Xingzhou eating.
He was very picky and hard to serve; she had thought he wouldn't eat the first meal she cooked at home but was surprised to see him clean his plate.
In front of Fu Xingzhou were several exquisite porcelain dishes, clearly takeout from Ao City's top Cantonese restaurant, Xu Jixuan.
"Come here."
Ye Yan walked over and stood, looking at him, "What do you want? This is my working time."
"Do hospitals forbid their staff from eating?" He tapped the chair next to him and pushed a bowl of rice her way, "Sit down and eat."
Indeed, Ye Yan was hungry, having not eaten all morning, and the tempting aroma had already set her stomach rumbling uncontrollably.
She picked up the chopsticks and glanced at the dishes on the table, "Your stomach has been upset recently, why are you still eating spicy food?"
The bright red chili and crimson broth were alluringly conspicuous.
Fu Xingzhou paused in his meal and looked meaningfully at her, "Dr. Ye, are you concerned about my health?"
He gently tapped his chopsticks against the dishes in front of him, his intense gaze seeming to burn into her heart, peeling away her thoughts layer by layer.
Ye Yan met his gaze calmly, "Mr. Fu is overthinking it—it's just a doctor's instinct, which you could also consider an occupational hazard."
Although Ye Yan said this, she was secretly startled.
From caring about his life or death yesterday to caring about his stomach today, if it were in the past, these are things she definitely wouldn't have noticed.
Could it be that after spending so much time together, she had started to get used to him?
This was not a good sign.
Here's what I ordered for you," Fu Xingzhou pushed the plate of spicy dish towards her, "Don't you revel in spicy food?"
Ye Yan indeed liked spicy food and could eat a lot of it; a meal felt tasteless to her without some chili.
However, Xu Jixuan was an authentic Cantonese restaurant, and Cantonese cuisine was known for its sweet freshness and light flavors; this dish was certainly not on their menu.
"Thank you," Ye Yan gratefully responded to his gesture, but she wasn't moved.
The two ate in silence, not talking much, until Fu Xingzhou's phone chimed.
Ye Yan glanced unintentionally and recognized Bai Chutong from the profile picture.
Due to work, the two of them were "friends," but their chats were limited to work-related topics.
Bai Chutong prided herself on her long legs, so her WeChat profile picture was blindingly full of legs.
Fu Xingzhou glanced at the message and suddenly handed her the phone, "Your colleague said this; how should I reply?"
Ye Yan almost choked on the chili in her mouth, coughed a few times, and her eyes welled with tears; she muttered with some irritation, "Reply however you want to."
Why should it concern her anyway? Wasn't he the one who added her on WeChat?
"Wasn't it you who encouraged her to pursue me? Don't you want to see how she's doing?"
Ye Yan smirked, realizing he had overheard their conversation.
Dog ears, huh? Quite sharp.
But she wasn't embarrassed, the fault wasn't hers, "Mr. Fu, I don't care how you flirt, but in front of a patient, it's best to restrain yourself."
His dad was still lying in bed; how could he possibly think it's appropriate?
"You mean the old master?" Fu Xingzhou smiled indifferently, "When he brought the Second Madam and Third Madam home back then, he never considered me."
Once, when he came home from school, Fu Wei Jun and the Second Madam were entwined on the sofa; seeing him, they didn't even flinch but just tossed a wad of money at him and told him to go buy something to eat.
Young Fu Xingzhou, just starting middle school, took the money and rode the Golden Bus over the Hong Kong-Ao City-Zhu Bridge to a casino in Au City, where that wad of cash turned into a box.
Fu Wei Jun then found the Third Madam and Fourth Madam, and while Fu Xingzhou was typically known in school as a purely abstinent guy, he suddenly started having girlfriends, changing them as frequently as taking mocks.
Ye Yan didn't know much about Fu Xingzhou's past, only hearing from others that he was born in a remote fishing village in Hong Kong. At two years old, his mother, unable to endure the poverty, ran away with a fishmonger from another area. It was Fu Wei Jun and Granny Fu who brought him up.
Later, Fu Wei Jun also started dealing in seafood. Being smart and forward-thinking, his business grew larger and larger until now, the Fu Family's Fisher's Wharf Group controlled over fifty percent of the seafood market in Hong Kong.
And the Fu Family's gambling empire was single-handedly built by Fu Xingzhou. Young as he was, he was considered legendary.
Though Fu Wei Jun had three wives and fathered four children, the bond between father and son was always strong—a well-known fact among those familiar with them.
The two fell silent again.
Fu Xingzhou wasn't eating much and seemed very interested in watching Ye Yan scoop up the dishes full of red oil and chili into her bowl, her lips plump and elastic, glowing with a ruddy sheen.
Suddenly, he leaned in, his cool lips grazing hers, his tongue flicking across her lips—a blend of spicy and sweet flavors.
Ye Yan had not expected him to kiss her so boldly.
