Modern World Warlock

Chapter 397: Nekxis’ Origin

As Baba-Yaga kept telling the clueless trio about Nekxis' plans on Earth, she explained that she had been hunting the leaders for hundreds of years.

When the polar shift happened and restarted life on Earth, her time machine sent her to the beginning of the 17th century, and it took the witch a long time to come to terms with the fact that humans had lost the ability to perceive magic.

Not even a decade later, she heard rumors of a couple of "witches" who had destroyed a village in Europe, and hoping that she could meet other Atlanteans, Yaga decided to look for them.

However, after years of searching, she was disappointed when she realized they were mages from Terra, who had somehow crossed through the convergence into their world.

At first, the mages wanted to recruit Yaga into their group, and considering that they were still early in their preparations, they spared no details when telling her about their plans.

Nonetheless, Yaga wasn't interested in ruling the world.

Believing that the mages would become a problem in the future, she managed to kill one of them before the second ran away. Since then, Yaga has been hunting Nekxis' members whenever possible.

Yaga only wanted to survive the incoming apocalypse at first, and she never thought she would care about the affairs of the new humans living on Earth. Still, she couldn't stand by while people she considered "invaders" were actively trying to rule the world.

"You know, as crazy as this story sounds, I still don't see a reason why those mages would want to rule a world where people can't use magic…" Megan interjected.

"It's not about the people living in it. It's about the technological advancement and the title they would obtain…" Yaga replied.

"Think about it. A group of people travels to the world where their gods were born, and they realize they can take over with their strength…" she continued.

"They want to be known as gods…" Dante interrupted, making Yaga nod affirmatively.

Vesnia placed a hand on her chin, and Megan was curious to know what she was thinking about.

The cyborg said that, during her time as a death knight with Isidor, the former holy knight mentioned that Aelara seemed to be obsessed with the "realm of the gods."

Of course, no one working under the goddess knew about the existence of this realm, but it was clear to her now that she was referring to Earth.

Yaga frowned, upset by the cyborg's words. Out of all the "gods" from Terra, Aelara was the only one that she didn't want to meet. Not because she was scared, but because she was disgusted by an Atlantean who had succumbed to greed.

"*Sigh* Look, there's a lot to take in from this… Would you be willing to accompany us to our home?" Megan asked, trying her best to be polite to the witch.

"Hmmmm…" Yaga hummed, contemplating the invitation.

Megan commented that, in any other setting, she would have shown less interest in Yaga's story.

It was interesting to know that an ancient, advanced civilization existed, but there was no reason for her to get involved in their affairs.

She only traveled to the Siberian forest to accompany Dante, believing they would find some information about his teacher and then return. However, the things she was listening to were utterly out of her range of expertise.

Seeing that the witch was still pondering her invitation, Megan officially introduced herself as the leader of the Jade Dragons, stating that her objective was to protect her family and friends above all else.

For that reason, she explained that she wouldn't have cared about Nekxis or the Atlanteans. But since Nekxis acted first and tried to hunt down Dante after his battle with Netherius, she believed that they were now involved.

"Even if we act like nothing happened and ignore the appearance of those soldiers, I doubt that they will stay quiet…" Megan explained.

"Huh… I see. I think I get it," Yaga interjected, muttering to herself while nodding with her head.

"Umm, what is it?" Megan asked.

"The umbra flowing from your body was similar to him…" Yaga replied, pointing at Dante.

"I didn't understand why, but I'm starting to get the picture…" she continued, gazing at Dante with a serious expression.

"Hey, kid. Don't do that anymore… The more mages there are in this world, the more difficult it will be to kick them out," Yaga said, adding that she hoped that Megan was the only one who had her powers awakened.

"Uhhh…" Dante hummed, gazing away from the witch as a drop of sweat trailed down his temple.

"Ugh. How many more are there?" Yaga asked, already knowing that Megan wasn't the only one who had done the ritual with Dante.

"There's my friend Zac, who became a berserker. Alice, who awakened as a dark paladin, and recently Paige, who is a, ummm… Actually, I'm not sure," Dante replied, looking back at Yaga, who was holding the bridge of her nose with annoyance.

"Hey, having them awaken helped me a lot, you know? I could've died against Netherius if they weren't there!" the warlock explained.

Yaga let out another sigh with exasperation. "Fine, I'll go. I need to check that mess you've made…" she said.

'If she is this annoyed about my friends, I can't imagine what she will say when she sees the demons…' Dante thought, keeping it to himself.

After reluctantly accepting the Jade Dragons' invitation, Megan spoke with Trinity to arrange a flight for the very next day.

They managed to complete their mission successfully, and she asked the hacker to pass the information along to the other members of the Jade Dragons. Moreover, she specifically asked for Paige to be present when they arrived, knowing that the scientist would go nuts when learning about Atlantis.

While Yaga said they could rest and sleep some more in her cabin, the trio didn't feel any sleepiness after everything they had heard. Still, they tried their best to get some shut-eye before the following morning.
