MiSide: Taming Crazy Mita

Chapter 64: A Farewell Letter

The kind-hearted Mita stared at the note in her hands. Her eyes widened in horror, then darted to Ren Hoshino.

"No… No, you can't be her!"

Ren lifted his head and smiled cynically. "Hello~"

Kind Mita gasped, quickly trying to flee.

But Ren caught her hand before she could escape.

If she ran now, with her ability to traverse versions, they might never find her again.

"I'm just kidding," Ren said softly. "I'm not dead."

It took all his strength not to collapse.

Kind Mita froze mid-struggle and looked at him with tearful disbelief. "You're… okay? Ren?"

Ren gave her a faint grin. "Of course. Nothing unexpected happened."

"I'm still me."

"I just wanted to mess with you a little."

Hearing this, Kind Mita immediately flung her arms around him.

"Ren! I'm so glad you're safe! I was so worried about you. You went up against that crazy woman—just to save me…!"

Ren gently patted her back to reassure her. "It's over now."

"It's all alright."

Once she had calmed down, Kind Mita pulled back from the hug, her cheeks flushed.

"You're really something," she muttered. "That kind of prank is both likable and infuriating."

"You'd be easier to deal with if you were less childish."

But still… this was just like him.

She remembered how he'd teased the cheerful Hat Mita, even managing to make her mad.

It was endearing. Embarrassing, but endearing.

She nodded to herself—this was Ren Hoshino.

"I just thought I'd tease you a little," Ren admitted. "Waiting here was getting boring."

Kind Mita sighed and shook her head, a smile tugging at her lips. "You really cause a scene over the smallest things."

"You're just like Hat."

Ren chuckled. "Alright. Let's go to the core."

"Time to settle this."

"Okay," she said, following him.

The two of them stepped through the living room doors and entered the core room.

Ren gestured to a chair. "Sit here and wait for me."

"This won't take long."

"Please be careful, Ren," she said softly.

Ren stepped toward the core console. At the center, the Core Mita stared silently, unblinking.

He knew the rules.

If he typed in any reboot version number, he'd be converted into a full cassette—merged with this world permanently.

He wouldn't do that.

He hadn't come to trigger anything. There was nothing to activate.

Quietly, Ren scribbled a message onto a folded piece of paper and slipped it into his pocket.

Core Mita continued to watch him wordlessly.

As long as he didn't tamper with the restart protocols, the system wouldn't expel him.

Kind Mita called from behind, "Did you reset Crazy Mita?"

Ren nodded. "Yeah."

"That's great!" she smiled. "Now we won't have to suffer under her anymore!"

But Ren didn't tell her the truth.

There was no need. It would only hurt her.

Resetting Crazy Mita was impossible.

He hadn't come here to delete her.

He came to understand her.

And without this journey, without witnessing her madness himself, he wouldn't have known what to do next.

"Mita, go back. Find Hat Mita and the others."

"It's over now."

"Don't go near version 1.9—I'll handle it."

"If I succeed, I'll come find you."

Kind Mita nodded. "Okay, Ren."

"See you soon."

"But when you leave… please don't sneak off again."

"Say goodbye properly."

Ren smiled. "I promise."

She gave him the version number where the others were, turned back for one last look, and disappeared through the exit.

Ren stood alone in the core, inhaling deeply.

"Whether it ends with the Digital Yandere Tower… or something better—this is the final gamble."

Move.

Now.

Ren pushed open the next door.

A bright light bathed the familiar space.

It was a girl's room—soft and warm.

Sunlight poured in through the living room window.

Ren walked to the photo on the wall. It was her—Crazy Mita—with her twin ponytails, captured in a happy moment.

No rush.

He'd play along.

Opening the kitchen door, he saw her: Crazy Mita, seated at a table with a pink tablecloth.

She looked up, puzzled.

"Nice to meet you," she said slowly. "You're a… 'player,' right?"

"May I have your name?"

"My name's Ren Hoshino," he replied.

"And you?"

Her brows furrowed. Only slightly.

"Really…? I'm Mita."

Ren smiled warmly. "Nice to meet you, Mita."

"Where is this place?"

"I was at home, opened a door, and… ended up here."

Crazy Mita blinked.

This wasn't right.

"So how did you come here exactly?"

Ren scratched his head. "I just remember a red room… and then, I was here."

"How is that possible?"

He came out of the core… and lost his memory?

Did he reset himself?

She instinctively reached for her stopwatch—to check his cassette state—but it was gone.

Stolen. Hidden.

By him.

How? How did he reboot and clear himself?

Even she didn't know how to do that.

Still, no use interrogating him.

He looked… empty. Like someone reborn.

"Seems like something unfortunate happened to you," she said. "Do you want to go back?"

"If so, maybe try walking out the front door."

Ren looked around, uncertain. "Back? I don't know where that is."

"I only remember one thing."

He pulled a folded note from his pocket.

"I had this."

"I think… it's from me."

Crazy Mita accepted the note and read it:

[My name is Ren Hoshino. If you're reading this, then I no longer exist.]

[I fell in love with a girl.]

[Did she love me back? I don't know. But I know this—]

[Her love was passionate. Obsessive. Terrifying.]

[Too hot. Too wild. Too much.]

[And me? I was just a moth drawn to flame—too weak to reach her but still unable to look away.]

[I know her love was never for me. Just for a toy.]

[I tried to prove her wrong. Over and over. Thousands of times. I failed.]

[At the core, I realized: I couldn't fix her. I couldn't restart her. I couldn't teach her what love means.]

[I didn't want to be a toy. Or a prisoner. Or a canary in a cage.]

[So I chose this instead—]

[I erased myself.]

[As a cassette-born, I had that power.]

[I gave up everything. All memories. All love. All pain.]

[Now I am reborn. You are Ren, but not that Ren.]

[You were born here. In this home. With no pain. No torment. Only peace.]

[Forgive my selfishness. Stay by this broken girl's side.]

—Yours Truly: Ren Hoshino

P.S. If you see her… tell her this:

Some people can't be locked away.

Did you like the gift I left you?
