MiSide: Taming Crazy Mita

Chapter 63: Caught You

Crazy Mita stared at the controller in Ren Hoshino's hand, her eyes fixated on the cartridge slot—he could pull it at any second.

"You won't do it," she said coolly.

"You're scared of dying."

"You think just because I'm obsessed with you, you can use that to threaten me."

"A coward like you wouldn't dare."

Ren smiled, calm and steady.

"You're too strong. If I don't do this, I don't see another way to stop you."

"You figured I'd never go through with it. You know me pretty well."

A devilish smile curled across Crazy Mita's face.

"We've been together for a long time, dear."

"I've watched you closely—studied you. You're a coward who wants to play hero."

"In the end, no one will save you."

Ren didn't flinch.

'Thieves die for greed. A traitor dies for loyalty. A whore dies for love. The brave die from fear.'

"If I have to die, I'll die on my own terms."

"You know me well enough, Academician Mita. So you already know the choice I'll make."

Crazy Mita's smile faltered. For the first time, something twisted behind her eyes—panic.

He might actually do it.

Ren might really destroy his own cassette.

"Ah~ how interesting!" she said, eyes sparkling with unstable joy.

"Ren, dear, you're just too funny!"

"The more I watch you… the more I love you!"

"Cowardice and courage—how are both trapped inside you like this?"

"You're such a contradiction… and it's beautiful."

Her voice trembled with twisted affection.

"You really are my favorite, most perfect cassette."

Ren smiled faintly. "You like that?"

Crazy Mita didn't hesitate. "I do."

Ren crooked his finger. "Then come here."

Crazy Mita released the frozen Kind Mita without hesitation and began walking toward him.

Ren turned to Kind Mita. "Go. Leave this to me."

Kind Mita hesitated. "Ren… this is dangerous."

"You have to live. You're our hope."

Her eyes glistened with emotion. She never expected to be saved—especially not like this. Ren had risked his own cassette to stop Crazy Mita.

She couldn't understand it.

What had he done?

Why did his death matter to someone like her?

This wasn't like Crazy Mita at all.

She backed toward the door, glancing one last time at Ren.

She didn't know what would happen to him now. If he really pulled the cartridge, he wouldn't reset—he'd be gone. Deleted.

But even knowing that, he still saved her without hesitation.

This player… he wasn't like any she had known.

Her heart raced—faster than it ever had.

Snap!

The door closed.

Ren sighed, letting his grip on the controller relax.

"Just us now, huh?"

"Could you be a little gentler? We've known each other so long."

Crazy Mita's expression turned cold. "No."

"You talk about saving me, but you keep choosing those dolls."

"It makes me sad. And angry. I can't calm down when you do that."

Ren extended the controller toward her. "Here. Take it."

"A gift. Satisfied?"

He paused. "But… I suggest you don't look inside."

Crazy Mita blinked, stunned.

He was giving it up—without a fight?

No threat? No leverage?

"…Why not?"

Ren smirked. "Wouldn't it be more fun to uncover the truth bit by bit?"

"Also… I don't like being stalked."

Crazy Mita hesitated. And then—"I promise."

She didn't understand why she agreed.

But something about him made her obey.

Ren gave a satisfied nod. Maybe he'd changed her, even if just a little.

"Alright then… what's next?"

"You gonna let me go?"

Crazy Mita's devilish grin returned. "Of course, dear~"

She wrapped her arms around his neck and stood on tiptoe.

Just as Ren thought he might actually enjoy this—

Darkness.

He blacked out instantly.

"Crazy woman," he murmured in his last conscious breath, "you've got no moral compass…"

She laid him gently on the sofa in the living room.

"Giving me a gift like that… You really do know how to entertain me."

She knelt beside him, brushing hair from his face.

"Consider this your gift too."

"I want to see what choice you'll make next… Ren."

Snap.

She snapped her fingers. The lights returned to normal—and she vanished.

Time passed slowly.

Ren stirred on the couch, groaning as he rubbed his head.

"Ugh… cheap shot. Damn crazy woman."

He stood, stretching. No injuries. Clothes untouched.

He opened the bathroom door—empty. Same with the hallway.

She was gone.

After a moment of thought, he tore off a piece of paper and started scribbling.

Then he sat in his desk chair, holding the note in one hand and his phone in the other.

He leaned back, eyes closed.

And waited.

He thought of something fun.

Something Kind Mita had spent her whole existence guarding.

Player.

Ring.

Note.

And you… Who are you?

The door opened quietly.

Kind Mita stepped in.

Her eyes widened when she saw him—alive and unharmed.

"Excuse me… who are you?" Ren asked, tilting his head in genuine confusion.

Kind Mita's breath caught. "You… don't remember?"

Ren gave a puzzled smile. "Should I?"

Tears welled in her eyes. She embraced him tightly.

"I'm sorry, Ren… this is my fault."

"You'll never be able to leave now."

"You're stuck here… because of me."

Ren blinked. "Leave? What do you mean?"

Kind Mita stepped back with a heavy heart. "You don't belong here. This is the game's world. You're trapped now."

Ren looked down at the objects in his hand.

"I don't know what these are. They've been here the whole time."

Kind Mita's eyes widened. "Your phone… and this note…"

She flipped it over. There was a number—Crazy Mita's code.

"You… you found her number!"

"But… you lost your memories…"

What was the point of this now?

Only a player could use this to access the core.

She clenched the note, trembling.

Then she noticed something scribbled on the back.

She turned it over.

Her breath stopped.

Scrawled in Ren's handwriting:

"Got you, doll."
