Chapter 4: Ch: 04
A month had passed since the hero ranking announcement, and the world was buzzing with talk of the new No. 1 hero, Gogeta.
Even All Might, the former No. 1 hero, had acknowledged his potential as a hero, his powerful Quirk, his humble humanity despite his immense strength, and his unwavering resolve to protect people from any threat. His relentless pursuit of self-improvement and his steadfast commitment to the ideals of his alma mater, U.A. High School, made him worthy of admiration both as a human being and as a hero.
That year, the number of students who decided to enroll at U.A. High School with dreams of becoming heroes increased nearly a hundredfold, and the teachers, led by a certain underground hero, were rumored to be muttering curses against Gogeta like incantations due to their overwhelming workload.
But that's neither here nor there.
However, being the talk of the town means living under constant scrutiny. Even now, on the internet, longtime fans of All Might and Endeavor still looked down on the upstart Gogeta, ready to tear him apart at the slightest misstep.
Such was the life of the new No. 1 hero, both blessed and cursed as the center of public attention.
"One moment of inattention can lead to a lifetime of injury. You might be exhausted from work, but dozing off while driving is unacceptable."
"Yes, sir..."
"Make sure to tell your boss that you were reprimanded by Gogeta."
"Yes, sir!"
In a certain city, he had just prevented a traffic accident, handing over a salaryman who had been nodding off at the wheel to the police who had responded to the call.
Since there were no injuries and it was determined that the company employing the driver was at fault for creating such poor working conditions, the driver received only a stern warning. After confirming this outcome, Gogeta wrapped himself in white flames and leaped into the air, soaring away.
"That's incredible, he's actually flying!"
"He doesn't have wings like Hawks. What kind of Quirk is that?"
"He flies, transforms, and has incredible strength."
"I heard he can shoot massive energy beams too."
"Is that the same technique Gogeta used to destroy that giant meteorite?"
"Oh, I know that one. It's called the 'Kamehameha Wave,' right?"
"Kamehameha Wave? What's that? Is it related to the Hawaiian king Kamehameha?"
"But isn't 'Kamehameha Wave' kind of lame?"
"Maybe, but all the kids in the neighborhood are copying it. I think it goes like: ka-me-ha-me..."
"No, don't do that here. It's embarrassing."
"But I don't know how to say it properly..."
"Ah."
"It's pretty cool though, isn't it?"
◇
Somewhere else entirely, Gogeta returned to his rural townhouse that served as both his office and home. The moment he arrived, he collapsed onto the sofa and transformed back into his human form, his hair returning to black.
"Ahhh... I'm so tired..."
He slumped onto the sofa without bothering to remove his hero costume—an undignified sight for the No. 1 hero, but he couldn't bring himself to care.
After all, since waking up, he had been constantly flying across the entire country, responding to various incidents and accidents as they arose. It had been eight hours since he'd resolved that first case with the drowsy driver, and today alone he had handled nearly a hundred human-caused incidents. While his body could endure it, his mind was utterly exhausted.
What weighed on him most was the mountain of paperwork piled on his desk. Before heading out into the field, heroes must complete various procedures related to their Quirk usage, including reports on battle damage and the scale of losses. Since the government granted them the freedom to use their powers, they had to follow these rules.
That's why he had decided to focus his hero activities in rural areas where villain-caused damage was minimal, but Gogeta's plan had backfired completely. Honestly, these everyday problems were far more challenging than typical villains.
Still, with Gogeta's physical strength and abilities, it should only take an hour or two... No, two hours would be genuine torture.
"Is this the burden of being the No. 1 hero?"
He had no interest in the hero rankings, but he couldn't ignore someone in trouble. Rather than operating from a sense of responsibility or pride as the top hero, Goto Shintaro prioritized what mattered as a human being. He understood his current situation, at least subjectively, to some extent.
Japan was currently at a turning point. All Might, long hailed as the Symbol of Peace, had fallen to No. 2, while Gogeta, a newcomer, had claimed the top spot.
If even one villain were to underestimate Gogeta, others would follow suit and begin to underestimate All Might as well. In fact, since the latest hero ranking, crime rates had been slowly but steadily increasing.
This was, in a sense, a trial. Gogeta had to prove to the world, no, to the entire universe, that he was a hero capable of replacing All Might, the greatest hero of all time.
Goku understood this logic, and so did Vegeta within him. Disrespect toward him meant disrespect toward All Might and the other heroes. That's why Gogeta had to become a new deterrent against villains.
"This responsibility is heavier than I expected. I wish the only weight I carried was from training."
The pressure of being No. 1 was more intense than anticipated. No wonder All Might carried such presence, Gogeta thought to himself.
He glanced toward the stairs leading down to the basement. Remembering that he hadn't trained properly for a month since the hero rankings, Gogeta stood up from the sofa, intending to focus on training for a while to clear his mind.
Ding-dong.
The doorbell rang, announcing a visitor.
"No way," he thought, but the feeling passed quickly. It would be unbecoming to take his frustration out on someone else, so Gogeta shook his head to clear his thoughts and opened the front door.
"Yes, this is Goto."
"I am here... I brought some cake as a souvenir!"
Standing at the entrance was a towering, muscular figure. The former No. 1 and current No. 2 Symbol of Peace, All Might, stood there in civilian clothes.
"──────"
Goto froze at the sudden appearance of his senior hero, blinking and rubbing his eyes, but the reality before him remained unchanged. For now, Goto Shintaro...
Click.
He decided to close the door without a word.
"Huh? Oh, Gogeta-kun? Sorry for showing up suddenly! I guess I'm not good at surprises... I just wanted to talk to you... Could you please open the door?"
The Symbol of Peace, flustered and panicking, was finally allowed inside by the super hero.
◇
"Sorry, I really shouldn't have dropped by like this."
"No, it's fine, but... what's going on? For a hero like you to come all this way..."
After a while, Gogeta changed out of his hero costume into pajamas, seated All Might in the place of honor, and set out coffee for both of them.
He was now Goto Shintaro. Out of respect for All Might as his senior, he spoke politely, but All Might seemed oddly disappointed by the formality.
"Before that, how about some cake? My favorite shop has a new creation."
"Really? Then I'll gladly accept. Should I add sugar to the coffee...?"
"......"
"Wait, maybe I should have added sugar?"
"No, it's just that this kind of response feels refreshing. Usually when I try to talk to you, you just brush me off, so it made me a little happy."
"What? All Might does that? To who?"
"...…Endeavor."
"...…Oh, yeah, he does seem like a tough guy."
All Might's friendly demeanor was quite a relief for Goto. During the hero ranking announcement, he had thought All Might was a strict senior, but since he had decided to speak casually to everyone when he was Gogeta, the approachable All Might was helpful in many ways.
On the other hand, the hero Endeavor was something of a taboo subject for Goto. Just approaching him was enough to sense his rejection, and the way he looked at him was more like viewing an enemy than a rival.
Shintaro was genuinely impressed by All Might's willingness to befriend such a difficult person.
"I wanted to greet him as a junior, but he just glared at me when I approached."
"Yeah, me too."
After that, the conversation shifted to their activities as heroes. As heroes active throughout Japan, both of them worked in various locations from land to sea and even in the sky, naturally finding common ground.
"So I lifted a tanker that was about to run aground, but I guess I didn't grip it properly, because I heard this awful groaning sound from the hull. It went 'Gigi, bang!' In that moment, I panicked and thought I'd completely messed up."
"I know exactly what you mean! Tankers look sturdy, but they're actually quite delicate. I once tried to lift one using brute force and it made a similar sound, I was totally panicked!"
"There was also that time I had to support a bridge that was about to collapse. 'Ahh, I messed up the fulcrum!'"
"Exactly! 'Fulcrum, force, and point of application!' I was so panicked that I started thinking about math class for some reason."
"And every time, the senior heroes would scold us. 'Don't rely on brute force!'"
"I got scolded by my master constantly too. 'If you can't use your strength wisely, you're just a fool.' Ugh, thinking about it still gives me chills..."
Gradually, they began sharing stories about their past mistakes. Realizing they had similar failures, they started smiling at the parts they could relate to.
Of course, no one else could understand the content of their conversation.
It was a pleasant moment. Goto, who had no memories of casual conversation since becoming the No. 1 hero, found his chat with All Might genuinely enjoyable. Topics they could relate to, failures they could share. Knowing that others had made similar mistakes, Goto truly appreciated All Might's visit.
But they couldn't enjoy themselves forever. Not wanting to waste the time All Might had taken to come all this way, Goto decided it was time to move the conversation forward.
"So, what exactly did All Might come to my house for? You didn't just come here to chat, did you?"
"..."
All Might's smiling expression turned serious. Goto realized once again that the Symbol of Peace was not just for show.
"Goto-kun. No, Super Hero [Gogeta]. I have a favor to ask of you."
"What is it...?"
"Will you team up with me for a while?"
◇
"Hyah! Grab it! Grab it!"
"Quirks are the best! Individuality is the best! It's a waste not to use them!"
"I am, we are, the villains!!"
A group of individuals rampaging through the streets. Frustrated with society, unable to control their abilities, they had finally lost their rationality and unleashed their malice. Driven by a desperate need for recognition, they destroyed everything around them, dragging others into their chaos.
As people fled in panic, cowering, screaming, and crying, the villains' faces contorted with delight.
Therefore...
"─────Ah"
"Huh? Hey, don't stop suddenly. It's getting boring... right?"
It is coming.
"What, what, what, what's happening...!?"
"Why here!?"
"No. 2 and No. 1 are hereeeee!"
"Alright, let's get to work. No showing any weakness here. Let's give it our all, Gogeta!"
"Of course. Let's go, All Might!"
"They're here!"
On that day, Japan trembled.
