Chapter 3: Chapter 3 Quirks & More Quirks
As the weeks flew by, both Dio and JoJo became better and better friends. Both gifted with talent in horse riding, they very quickly learned from Johnny's father, and soon they were allowed to race around the track under light supervision from either George or Robert. Of course, it wasn't just the boys that were like two peas in a pod, both Anne and Maria became fast friends. Often inviting each others' families over to cook for them, going for morning walks in the forests when the boys were horse riding and exchanging books they had read in their spare time.
Things were going as well as possible for both families, so far it had been the best summer Dio had ever had, which hadn't been many so far.
--
One late afternoon, weeks after their first meeting, Dio and JoJo were out by the forest that started at the top of the field. Dio's mother had said that the weather forecast was to be dry for most of the day but rain in the afternoon, he as per usual had only heard that it was to be clear for the majority of the day and took it that it wasn't going to rain when he was out playing with JoJo. He was wrong. At first it was just a light shower that didn't break through the tree's canopy, they didn't even notice it. But then came the torrential rain that pierced through the leaves and started to soak the boy's clothes.
"JoJo, we need to run home quick if we don't want to get super wet!" says Dio.
"Where did the rain even come from! It was dry 3 minutes ago!" JoJo said in disbelief and outrage as he gazed into the thick wall of rain coming towards them through the trees.
"Dad says that we get all four seasons every day." Dio responded.
"But I don't wanna go home yet." JoJo sulked. "Do you think I could use my quirk to make the rain go back the way it came?" he turned to ask Dio.
"You mean like the Hero Weather report? Don't be silly he's super strong, you couldn't do that. How would you even touch the clouds to make them spin?"
"Oh, I guess you're right." JoJo said dejectedly.
"But maybe you could spin the trees to make a roof to keep us out the rain?" Dio suggested.
"DIO you're a genius!" JoJo exclaimed in excitement. Before he turned to the nearest tree and touched it with his palm and scrunched up his face to concentrate on what he wanted the tree to do. Seconds later the branches closest to the bottom of the tree all began to twist and contort between each other creating a spiral pattern that the heavy downpour of rain couldn't get through.
"Woah." Was the only thing Dio could say as he watched the massive tree be shaped to JoJo's whims.
When JoJo was done he stepped back panting and looked up at the makeshift roof that now covered the boys from the raging rain of the skies. Taking in the sight of what he had accomplished he couldn't stop a cheesy grin from creeping unto his face, same giggles of joy escaping from his mouth.
"That was so cool!" they both shouted at the exact time. Turning to the other they both burst into laughter.
They spent the next 20 minutes discussing JoJo's new way to use his quirk, it quickly devolved into a discussion on how they should make their super secrete treehouse base. Before they could get much into making the treehouse the rain began to die down and almost come to a complete halt.
"We should probably go home now, so our Mums don't get mad at us like last time we stayed out too late. I don't want to be grounded and banned from riding the horses again." Dio said with a small frown on his face while tugging on JoJo's sleeve to get him to follow.
"Yeah okay, we can always come back and finish it tomorrow." JoJo says, nodding his head vigorously. "Race you there!" he shouted before booking it towards the track that leads out the forest and down around the side of the field where the horses roamed.
Dio, not one to be left behind scrambled to catch up, jumping over tree roots and weaving between tree trunks as fast as his little legs would allow him to.
10 minutes later Dio could be seen crouching against the outer wall of the house , his breathing calm. He peeked over the wall he was hiding behind his eyes tracking JoJo between the hedge rows. JoJo had just rounded the corner of the final stretch towards Dio's house. As he started to slow down as he approached the front wall of the house looking around for where he thought Dio would have been behind him, panting heavily from the run. And just as he was about to pass the outer wall, Dio sprung up scaring JoJo.
"Boo!" Dio yelled.
"What!" JoJo squeaked as he jumped backwards in fright. "How did you get here before me?! I thought I won." He asked with a puzzled look on his face.
"Hehe. I ran through the field instead of around it." Dio said, while rubbing his nose with a smug grin on his face.
"Well… I'm going to win next time." JoJo proclaimed stubbornly.
"Boys! Come inside before it rains and have a snack!" Maria called from the threshold of the front door. "I baked some shortbread while you boys were out tussling in the rain. So come on inside get those muddy shoes off and have some, before your father eats them all." Says Maria before turning to go back inside the house.
"What's shortbread?" asked JoJo.
"It's a bit like the cookie your mum gave me last week. Have you never heard of it before?" Dio replied.
"No, I don't think so, I've never seen it back in America before." JoJo spoke as he shook his head gently.
"It's super tasty you have to have some!" says Dio.
JoJo nods his head eagerly as both boys throw off their muddied shoes at the front door and ran through to the kitchen. Jumping up the small table to grab a drink of water to quench their thirst and the shortbread to boost their energy. Not that they needed any more than what they already had. By the time they had finished their snack, the doorbell rang out.
"That must be your parents JoJo." Maria commented. "You go and put on your shoes while I let them in and Dio, say your goodbyes to JoJo now."
"Okay" they said in unison, pouting slightly.
"Oh boys, don't be like that you see each other every day." She says as she moves to open the door. "Evening Mrs Joestar, here to take JoJo back home I presume?"
"Yes, we are just about to go out for dinner, so I came to pick him up to get ready before we go." Anne replied.
JoJo made is way to the front door, fist bumping Dio as he went. "See you tomorrow, Dio?" he said.
"Yeah, we can finish the tree fort tomorrow!" says Dio.
Before they could continue any longer Anne spoke up. "Well, I'm afraid JoJo won't be here tomorrow. You see we have an important meeting over in London. And we must take JoJo with us."
"Aww, so when will he be back?" Asked Dio.
"We will be back in the manor the following day, possibly late depending on how the meeting goes." Anne said. "But we plan to take both you boys to a Zoo to see other animals the following day. Depending on your say so Mrs Brandon?" she continued looking at Maria for approval of her plans.
Dio looked to his mother with large pleading puppy eyes. "Please, please, please!" he begged.
She buckled under the adorable pressure of her sons Doe eyes. "Well, I'll have to speak with Robert. I don't see any issues with that. But only if you are on your best behaviour."
"Yeah!!" both Dio and JoJo replied in sync with each other.
"Now that that's sorted. Come on JoJo, your dad will be waiting for us to get home." Said Anne as she motioned or him to follow her outside the door.
"Byee Dio, we can keep playing when I get back from my trip!" says JoJo as he stepped outside walking alongside his mother, back to their manor.
"Bye JoJo!" replied Dio, before he shut over the front door once they were out of his view.
"Dio, come help me get dinner ready for tonight." Maria requested.
Late that night at the dinner table Dio explained all about how JoJo had made the tree into a shelter and that they were going to make their own secrete treehouse in the woods. Robert offered to help them, but Dio refused saying then it wouldn't be a secrete base anymore.
But when it came to desert Dio suddenly grasped his mouth as he began to groan in pain, doubling over and falling onto the floor from his chair. Robert and Maria ran over to check on him as fast as they could.
"DIO! What's wrong Dio!" Maria screamed.
Robert went to check his pulse; it was still strong, he let a small sigh of relief escape his mouth. Turning to look at Dio he reiterated Maria's question. "What's wrong Dio, where does it hurt son?"
Through his groans and whispers he managed to squeak out, "Its m…. my teeth. Dad they hur- they hurt so so much."
"Let me have a look at them." Maria said as a soft glow permeated from her hands as she activated her quirk, holding each side of Dio's cheeks in her palms.
Dio still slightly wincing as he pulled his lips apart to show his sharpened teeth covered in blood as his gums started to bleed profusely.
"Oh, I think we need to take him to the doctors. I think his quirk's come in." Robert said to Maria as he saw what had happened to Dio's teeth. "I will get the car ready to go and phone ahead, you try get Dio up and into the car." Says Robert.
"Robert. The village Clinic might still be open, Mrs Afton stays later Tuesdays. We should try their first to see if they can help, then if something else happens we take him into the city to get to any larger hospital." Maria says quickly, urgence lacing her voice.
"Right, we will do that, I'll hurry and get the car started." He said as he grabbed his car keys and raced out the front door.
Maria turned back to Dio, her quirk still soothing the pain in his mouth as his teeth began to rapidly sharpen putting more strain in his gums, causing more blood to escape from his mouth as his mother sat him forward to stop him from choking. She then picked Dio up and moved to the car, fastening him in his seat before she sat bedside him. Robert in the drivers seat had already started the car and began to pull out of the bay where the car had been parked and drove down the dirt track towards the local village.
--
At the local clinic Mrs Afton was about to head home for the day, reaching up to pull the shutters down over the entrance to the clinic when she heard a car approaching at a moderately fast pace. She turned to see what was happening, only to find Maria jumping out from the back of the car with her son Diego in her arms.
"Mrs Afton, you must take a look at Diego. We think his quirk manifested while we were having dinner and it's causing him to bleed lots of blood from his gums. He nearly choked to death on the car journey over here!" Maria spoke with a sense of concern and urgency within her voice.
"My Goodness, bring him in at once!" she replied moving to unlock the clinic door to allow them inside. Once inside she applied her quirk Minor Diagnostics to see what was wrong with Diego.
"His teeth are growing and sharpening very quickly, but the blood he has lost is being generated at a similar rate to what he is losing. We don't need to worry about him collapsing, but I will still give him some painkillers for the pain he is experiencing. The rate at which they are sharping has slowed down, he should be fine in about one hours' time." Mrs Afton replied to Maria and Robert as they sat nervously in her office with Dio sitting upright with a basin in front of him to spit out any excess blood blocking his breathing.
"I will collect some of his blood and send it to the quirk licence registration hospital in town, if there's anything else that his quirk awakening is affecting, they will contact you right away." Says Mrs Afton as she wiping down the surface that had specs of blood beginning to dry upon it.
"Thank you so much Mrs Afton, we were so worried." Replied Maria. "We will take him back home in a while, he must be so exhausted."
