Chapter 5: Awakening in the academy
For a moment, the sergeant paused—Kyle, a Level 4 without a familiar, was an anomaly. It was unheard of for someone to reach that level without forming a contract.
Then, Kyle and the others were teleported in front of the academy, their new home for the foreseeable future.
A cloaked man with brown hair stood waiting. Strands of his hair peeked from beneath his hood, and his piercing blue eyes studied them.
They stood in silence, waiting for the next batch of students to arrive.
Out of a total of 30 students, the cloaked man finally spoke.
"Alright, you all need to follow me," he said. "Welcome to your new home."
He turned and gestured toward the massive structure before them.
"My name is Mr. Storm," he continued as he walked ahead, leading them through the academy gates.
Mr. Storm guided them through the school, pointing out various sections. As he spoke, a slight smile played on his lips—a strange contrast to his dark, worn-out clothing.
"You are free to chat with your peers," he added. "These are your classmates, after all."
The moment he said this, students began mingling, forming small groups based on power and status. Kyle, however, remained a little awkward. He lacked social experience, and to make things worse, he was still in his pajamas.
He noticed that mid-tier students were eagerly trying to befriend the stronger ones, rushing toward Darius and Lena. Meanwhile, Kyle had yet to meet Vivian, who was considered among the lowest tiers.
"Wow, you were actually great out there," someone said nearby.
"Stop saying that. I barely made it through," another voice replied.
"Even though your mana and willpower were outstanding, if it were up to me, you'd already be Level 6."
Kyle turned as Jace clapped him on the back.
"Hey man, you were good out there," Jace grinned. "It was marvelous! And you did all that without a familiar!"
Kyle only gave a small nod as the three of them lagged behind the group. Mr. Storm continued the tour, leading them through various training grounds, classrooms, and battle arenas.
The battle arena was particularly impressive, equipped with advanced testing equipment similar to what they had encountered in the wasteland. Several square fighting platforms lined the area, likely used for combat practice.
Eventually, they reached their homeroom classes, sports facilities, and, finally, the academy's vast library.
By the time the tour ended, Kyle was exhausted.
Two military personnel halted their group. One held a Knoxx Card, while the other carried a list of names.
They began calling out students who lacked familiars, offering them earth-based Knoxx Cards as substitutes.
Afterward, Mr. Storm handed out dorm assignments.
Kyle glanced at his slip. Room 27.
"What's your number?" a student beside him asked.
"27," Kyle replied.
"No way, you're kidding! Mine too!"
As they reached their assigned room, they found their bags already placed on their beds, along with timetables detailing the dress code for each day.
To Kyle's surprise, his other roommate was none other than Darius Holt.
Kyle felt a slight relief—at least he wouldn't be stuck with a complete stranger. Darius, however, seemed in a grumpy mood as he settled in.
Suddenly, a notification screen popped up in Kyle's vision.
[Congratulations]
[Reward: 100 EXP]
Kyle felt a strange surge of energy rush through him.
[EXP: 110/50]
His body became lighter, and a strange warmth gathered in his core.
Then, a new notification appeared.
[Mana has been unlocked]
[Mana: 25]
[Mana Skills Unlocked:]
Mana Sense – Allows Kyle to detect mana within himself and his surroundings.
Mana Reinforcement – Slightly strengthens the body, increasing speed and endurance.
Mana Surge – Grants a short burst of power, enhancing physical performance for a few seconds.
[+10 Skill Points Earned]
Kyle immediately opened his profile.
[User: Kyle Corvayn]
[Race: Human]
[Level: 2]
[EXP: 60/75]
[HP: 30/30]
[Strength: 15]
[Agility: 10]
[Stamina: 20]
[Willpower: 10 → 20]
[Mana: 25]
He decided to allocate his points into Willpower before glancing at the Knoxx Card he had received earlier.
A notification popped up.
[The card cannot be used]
[However, it can be converted to EXP]
Without hesitation, Kyle converted it.
[EXP: 65/75]
The card vanished before his eyes. Thankfully, neither of his roommates noticed.
Now properly settled in, Kyle changed into his military uniform—a white top with dark blue trousers. Since it was still early, he decided to visit the library.
As he left the dorm, Jace called out.
"Kyle, wait up! Where are you going?"
"Library," Kyle replied.
"Alright, let's go together," Jace said, catching up.
At the library, Kyle was surprised by the sheer volume of digital records.
"Most of the school's information has been digitized," Jace explained. "Only archaic or classified books remain in hard copy, and even those are hard to access."
"Well, it is the military we're talking about," Kyle muttered. "They probably have records dating back to the country's formation."
"So, what are you looking for?" Jace asked.
"Anything about familiars and their types," Kyle replied as he scanned the bookshelves.
As he flipped through a book, a thought struck him.
"Hey, Jace... have you ever heard of a familiar called a Boneclaw?"
Jace frowned. "No, never heard of it."
His interest quickly faded, and he left Kyle to continue his research alone.
After some time, Kyle left the library, checking his profile as he walked through the dimly lit halls.
I need to find a way to level up faster.
Lost in thought, he didn't notice the Level 6 student stepping out from the shadows.
Kyle glanced at his watch—only Darius and Lena were supposed to be the highest-ranked in his year. This guy was a second-year.
The stronger students always seemed to bully the weaker ones, using their familiars to dominate them.
"Hey, got anything to offer up?" the Level 6 student smirked.
Kyle clenched his fists. "No... I've got nothing for you," he replied, annoyed. He was sick of stronger students throwing their weight around.
A notification flashed in his vision.
[A Familiar Has Been Summoned]
[Initiating Battle Mode]
[New Quest Received]
[Defeat a Level 6 Opponent]
[Reward: 20 EXP]
Kyle's heart pounded.
A one-way ticket to leveling up just arrived.
