MFS:my familiar system

Chapter 4: Ranks and reckoning

---

The Emergence of Familiars

When familiars were first introduced to the human race, people quickly discovered that some were far stronger than others. It also became evident that familiars varied from person to person, their strength and nature heavily influenced by the willpower of their summoner.

Not long after, a standardized power-ranking system was established to measure both an individual's strength and their familiar's potential. This system ranked power levels from one to fifteen, with further subdivisions—1.25, 1.5, 1.75, 2.00, 2.25, and so on—allowing for more precise classification.

There were two primary methods of obtaining a familiar:

Summoning Cards – A controlled and stable method, where a familiar is bound peacefully through a contract.

Aura-Based Summoning – A far more chaotic process, in which an individual releases a powerful aura to disrupt the fabric of the familiar realm. In response, familiars are drawn to the summoner, engaging in combat with one another. The victorious familiar claims the human as its host.

During the war against the High Orcs, the sudden appearance of familiars shocked the enemy. Their presence alone was enough to turn what would have been a swift defeat into a hard-fought stalemate.

It was only after the war that a select group of individuals—those who had formed bonds with strange and powerful familiars—shared their knowledge of how such creatures could be acquired. Their findings were documented and, before long, corporations found a way to commercialize the process. Using resources scavenged from the High Orcs, they transformed the traditional summoning method into Knoxx Cards—artificial summoning cards that allowed humans to summon familiars more conveniently.

However, as time passed, these companies saw an opportunity to profit. They declared that the cards could only be used once, ensuring a constant demand for new ones. By controlling distribution, they shaped the economy around familiar summoning.

Knoxx Cards ranged in quality from Ember Tier to Ascendant Tier, but they did not directly determine the kind of familiar one would obtain. Instead, they increased the probability of summoning a higher-tier creature.

For example, a Dominion Tier Knoxx Card did not guarantee a Dominion Tier familiar, but it significantly raised the odds of summoning one, while still allowing the possibility of receiving a weaker familiar from Ember or Veil Tier.

And so, the era of familiars began.

The testing Grounds

Kyle stood among the gathered students, his hands clenched into fists. The massive training arena stretched before them, a battlefield designed to test every weakness. Floating platforms, shifting terrain, and mechanical sentries lined the course.

Sergeant Evermore's voice rang out like steel.

"This is your Power Assessment Test. Three trials stand before you—Survival, Mana Control, and Combat. Pass, and you advance. Fail… and you prove you're not worth our time."

A deep hum vibrated through the air as the arena shifted, the ground breaking apart into separate paths.

"First test—The Survival Run. Reach the end. If you fall, you fail."

A loud buzzer sounded, and the students burst into motion.

---

Phase One: The Survival Run

Kyle launched forward, staying light on his feet. The first part of the test was simple—maneuver through unstable terrain while avoiding obstacles. He quickly realized the real challenge wasn't just the course but the students around him.

A student stumbled—Kyle barely dodged as they slammed into an energy pit. Another was thrown off balance by a shifting platform.

To his left, Darius Holt moved like a storm, his Stormfang Panther crackling with lightning. He didn't hesitate. He didn't slow down. When a wall of rotating blades blocked his way, he vaulted over them mid-air, using a burst of electricity to clear the gap.

Behind him, Lena Voss took a different approach. She didn't rush—she calculated every step. When energy spikes shot from the floor, her Glassthorn Viper coiled around her and hardened into crystal, absorbing the impact before she advanced. Not the fastest, but never reckless.

Kyle pushed forward. His instincts screamed at him to move faster, think faster. He adjusted his movements mid-step, using his momentum to jump between platforms before they collapsed.

Nearby, Rael Stroud and his Umbral Raven practically vanished. He used the shadows of moving structures, avoiding obstacles instead of confronting them. A different kind of strategy—but an effective one.

Further behind, Soren Vale tanked every obstacle. His Ironback Stag absorbed blunt force, but its slow speed held him back.

Erik Fenrow relied on pure aggression—his Blazehound melted barriers with bursts of flame, but his reckless movements nearly got him knocked off twice.

Vivian Marchand, struggling near the end, used her Silverwing Moth defensively. Her moth's soft glow disrupted some of the energy traps, allowing her to barely slip through without direct confrontation.

Kyle's heartbeat pounded in his ears as he leaped for the final platform, rolling to his feet just as the buzzer signaled the end.

He had made it.

Phase Two: The Mana & Willpower Test

A new challenge awaited.

Floating mana orbs hovered before each student.

"This test is simple," Sergeant Evermore stated. "Use your willpower and mana to push your orb forward. The further it goes, the higher your score."

Kyle focused. He reached deep, calling on his own power.

Nothing happened.

A few students glanced at him, murmuring.

"Does he have no mana?"

Kyle gritted his teeth. No. He knew he had mana. He just didn't know how to control it yet.

Nearby, Darius raised his hand—and his orb shot forward in a streak of lightning, propelled by his refined energy control.

Lena compressed her orb instead of pushing it outward, showing precision rather than distance.

Rael's orb flickered, moving in unstable bursts, matching the unpredictability of his Umbral Raven.

Soren's orb moved slow but steady, his raw endurance affecting his mana output.

Vivian's orb pulsed with a soft glow, causing other orbs near her to resonate slightly, a rare ability that the instructors noted.

Kyle's orb did not move.

His fingers curled into a fist.

He wasn't weak. He just didn't have the right method yet.

Phase Three: Combat Evaluation

The final test: one-on-one combat.

Kyle stepped into the sparring arena, facing an opponent—a Shadowfang Wolf user.

The upper-class recruit smirked.

"You're the guy with no mana, huh?"

Kyle didn't reply. The moment the match started, his opponent's wolf lunged.

Kyle sidestepped, barely avoiding its snapping jaws. He didn't wait—he pivoted and drove his fist into the other student's ribs, forcing him back.

The other student snarled, swinging at him—Kyle ducked, slipped behind, and delivered a sharp kick to the back of his knee, making him stumble.

He was fighting purely on instinct, speed, and technique.

His opponent tried to recover, sending his wolf after him again. Kyle rolled under its claws, using the wolf's momentum against it.

A few gasps rang out from the crowd.

Kyle wasn't winning through raw power—he was winning because he refused to lose.

His opponent growled, pushing his mana into a final attack—his Shadowfang Wolf's fangs glowed with energy, aiming for a finishing blow.

Kyle moved first.

He feinted left, then twisted mid-motion, sweeping his opponent's legs out from under him. As his opponent hit the ground, Kyle drove his knee into his chest, pinning him.

The buzzer sounded.

"Winner—Kyle Corvayn!"

Murmurs spread through the onlookers.

"He won… without a familiar?"

"No. He won without using mana at all."

Sergeant Evermore's eyes narrowed.

Kyle stood up, brushing dust off his uniform. His heart still pounded—but he had proved himself.

For now.

Kyle had earned his place—but he could feel the eyes on him.

The instructors. The students.

They didn't know what to make of him.

And Kyle knew that, sooner or later, he'd have to prove himself again.

But that was fine.

Because he wasn't planning on stopping.
