Chapter 39: Chapter 39: Captain America's Plan
Padmé continued to navigate cautiously through the corridors of the Malevolence, with a increasingly anxious C-3PO trailing behind her. She eventually stopped in front of a communications panel, attempting to bypass its security protocols.
"Forgive me, my lady, but I strongly suggest we evacuate this area immediately," C-3PO interrupted with obvious distress. "I am detecting the approach of battle droids from multiple directions."
"I understand, Threepio, but we need to establish contact with the Republic fleet right now," Padmé replied while continuing to work on the communication system. She expressed her frustration openly: "If only I could get this communication array to function properly."
C-3PO peered nervously around the corner again. "My lady, I'm afraid my assessment is correct. We really must depart immediately."
General Grievous was leading a squad of battle droids down the corridor directly toward Padmé's position, their mechanical footsteps echoing ominously through the ship's passages.
Upon hearing the approaching sounds, Padmé quickly grabbed a large piece of fallen hull plating and concealed both herself and C-3PO behind its protective cover.
Grievous approached the communication panel while Padmé, hidden behind the metal debris, could observe the numerous mechanical legs of battle droids through small gaps in her concealment. She was so terrified that she barely dared to breathe, fearing discovery at any moment.
At that critical moment, a battle droid contacted Grievous through his personal communicator.
"General, incoming transmission."
"What is it?" Grievous replied with irritation.
"The hyperdrive damage assessment has been revised. The systems are not as severely compromised as initially reported, and engineering teams believe repairs can be completed shortly."
This update significantly improved Grievous's mood. "Excellent. I will inform Count Dooku of this development immediately." He turned to address the battle droids behind him with explicit orders: "You will remain here and continue the search pattern. You must locate the hostage and bring her to me alive."
With Grievous departed and the droid patrol no longer in the immediate vicinity, Padmé released a quiet sigh of relief and began considering her next course of action.
Outside the Malevolence, Anakin maintained a steady approach vector, piloting the Twilight silently toward the massive enemy warship while ensuring nothing would alert the Separatist forces to their presence.
"If they detect us, we're all dead," Obi-Wan observed with characteristic pessimism.
"They're completely focused on emergency repairs right now," Anakin replied with typical nonchalance. "No one will notice us."
Obi-Wan was clearly frustrated by Anakin's casual attitude and said seriously, "Anakin, strategic planning has never been your greatest strength."
"Master, I learned everything I know from you," Anakin retorted with a mischievous grin.
"If only that were actually true," Obi-Wan sighed while addressing his former apprentice who had become a Jedi Knight in his own right.
"We're approaching the target hangar bay," Sam reported from his position.
"Prepare for docking procedures," Anakin announced while searching for the optimal entry point into the Malevolence.
The impact vibrations caused by the Twilight docking with the Malevolence nearly knocked over two nearby battle droids stationed in the area.
"Did you register that disturbance?"
"What disturbance?"
"That sound—it resembled a vessel docking at the emergency airlock."
"Your auditory sensors must be malfunctioning. No one would be foolish enough to attempt such a maneuver."
Sam and Rhodey flew ahead of the rest of the team and took defensive positions in front of the door leading from the airlock, where Scott, Steve, Anakin, Obi-Wan, and R2-D2 joined them via the docking platform.
"Anakin, you are absolutely insane," Obi-Wan stated firmly, then whispered urgently, "I sincerely hope we avoid detection."
The moment Obi-Wan finished speaking, the airlock door opened and two battle droids appeared in the doorway.
Sam reacted with lightning reflexes, firing several precise shots that struck both droids in their head units, destroying them instantly before they could raise an alarm.
The entire group had been on edge just moments before. Without Sam's quick thinking, if those two droids had managed to transmit a warning, their entire mission would have been compromised.
"Did you have to target their heads specifically?" Scott complained while examining the destroyed droids.
"What's your problem with my targeting?" Sam asked with confusion.
"I wanted to see if I could hack into their operating systems and observe how they execute command protocols," Scott explained while nudging one of the droid heads with his foot. "If successful, I might even be able to infiltrate and corrupt their entire network infrastructure."
"You can actually do that?" Sam asked with genuine surprise.
"I've been researching cybersecurity and artificial intelligence systems for several months before we arrived in this galaxy," Scott replied with a shrug. "I could have tested my theories on these two units, but now..."
Anakin exchanged a curious glance with Obi-Wan, who looked equally intrigued by this unexpected capability.
"We should definitely explore that possibility later," Anakin said with interest. "That kind of ability could prove extremely valuable."
Steve, shield at the ready, made a tactical suggestion: "It would be more efficient if we divided into two teams. We could cover significantly more territory that way."
Anakin agreed immediately. "That's an excellent strategy. Steve, Sam, would you team up with me?"
"Absolutely," Steve replied.
"Scott, Rhodey, you're with me," Obi-Wan said, gesturing toward the corridor opposite to Anakin's intended direction.
As both teams began moving through the corridors of the Malevolence, they received an incoming transmission from Ahsoka aboard the Republic fleet.
"Master, we've established communication with Senator Amidala and are patching her through now," Ahsoka reported through their communication systems.
"Padmé?" Anakin called out hopefully.
"Anakin," came Padmé's voice, filled with obvious relief.
"Are you injured? What's your current location?" Anakin asked with evident worry.
"I'm somewhere on the lower decks of this vessel," Padmé replied. "I'm unharmed for now, but I'm not sure how much longer I can evade capture. There are battle droids conducting search patterns throughout the ship—they're definitely looking for me."
"I've assembled a rescue team and we're already aboard the Malevolence," Anakin informed her. "We'll have you out of there very soon."
"What?" Padmé exclaimed with alarm. "What are you doing here? This is far too dangerous!"
Rather than waste time answering Padmé's concerns, Anakin addressed Ahsoka directly: "Ahsoka, can you help us locate the Senator's position?"
"According to our long-range scans, there appears to be a central maintenance area in the middle section of the Malevolence," Ahsoka reported. "It should be approximately halfway between both of your current positions."
"Did you hear that, Padmé? We'll rendezvous at that location," Anakin said with renewed excitement.
"Wait a moment," Steve interrupted with tactical consideration. "We're operating inside an enemy warship, which means there are numerous battle droid patrols throughout the vessel. They're also working intensively to repair the hyperdrive systems and restore full operational capacity."
"So what are you suggesting?" Scott asked with curiosity.
"We need to create multiple diversions," Steve analyzed with military precision. "First, we can draw the attention of patrolling droids away from the Senator's area. Second, we can force repair crews to abandon their work stations, which will significantly slow their progress on restoring hyperdrive capability."
"Captain, I'm definitely the right person for that kind of operation," Rhodey said with confidence, his War Machine armor's weapons systems already powering up.
"I can scout ahead and try to locate the Senator while staying undetected," Scott added, preparing to activate his shrinking capabilities.
Obi-Wan looked meaningfully at his former apprentice Anakin, the implication clear: observe the comprehensive planning they've developed, then compare it to your approach.
When faced with this obvious contrast, Anakin could only respond with a rueful smile and growing appreciation for his new allies' tactical expertise.
