A faint ripple in the air split the fabric of space, and a glowing portal slowly spiraled open in the depths of the long-forgotten underground cavern. From within it, Nova stepped out, his figure bathed in the dim, flickering light of residual mana still clinging to the shattered ruins. The moment his boots touched solid ground, the portal behind him flickered once — and vanished as though it had never existed.
Nova stood there for a long, silent moment.
It had only been a week — seven days since that battle. Seven days since he'd faced down a corrupted Thunder Dragon and gotten beaten half to death in the process. But standing here now, looking at the cracked, scorched stone and lingering scorch marks along the cavern walls, it felt like a lifetime ago. The thick scent of burned earth and ancient magic still hung heavy in the air, and the deep claw trenches along the floor remained as silent witnesses to the fight that nearly ended him.
He let out a long breath, his gaze sweeping over the ruined altar, the collapsed stone pillars, and the lingering arcs of static that still crawled along fractured boulders. It was strange. The place felt so small now. The oppressive weight that had once crushed his spirit here was gone, leaving behind only echoes of violence and death.
Nova shook his head, a humorless smile tugging at his lips. "One week," he muttered to himself, "and it feels like a different lifetime."
But there was no time for nostalgia. He clenched his fist, the faint glow of refined mana still circulating through his veins, and turned his focus inward. The last words of the Thunder Dragon surfaced in his mind, the deep, rumbling voice clear as if spoken beside him.
"Your reward for freeing me was that liquid mana. And that opportunity to sense the laws themselves — that was the World Tree's gift to you, given in advance. Its only request… its only quest for you… is to free itself from those chains… and to hunt down the devils who did this."
Nova's expression hardened.
He had his mission now. His first true trade — a priceless opportunity exchanged for an impossible burden: the task of breaking chains forged by devils and bound around a primordial being older than most realms. He wasn't arrogant enough to believe he could pull it off alone. Not now. Not yet. But the seed had been planted, and the path stretched out before him, no longer a choice but an inevitability.
"World Tree… devils… and those chains." Nova whispered under his breath, his fingers tightening around the hilt of his Demon Dweller Sword. A strange calm settled over him. He wasn't the same man who had stepped into this cavern a week ago, drunk on confidence and the dangerous illusion of foreknowledge. Back then, he believed he could navigate this world because he knew its story. Because he'd seen it play out in anime, manga, and novels.
But that illusion had been shattered.
The multiverse wasn't a collection of predictable scripts. It wasn't a game board waiting for him to tilt the pieces in his favor. It was vast, ancient, and terrifying in its indifference. Each world was more than a story told through ink and pixels — it was alive, dark, and infinitely deeper than what any fiction could capture.
That Thunder Dragon… by the power rankings of the Marvel world, it was easily a Single Universe Rank being. And it had been mind-controlled. Not defeated, not banished — controlled and corrupted by the very devils Nova once believed would be minor hurdles, easily dispatched because Asta and Yuno defeated them in canon. He'd been proud of his knowledge, smug in his sense of security, thinking he could see the future, could master fate just by knowing what was supposed to happen.
And fate had slapped him in the face.
The reality was crueler, grander, and far darker than he ever imagined. The world he thought he understood was only a splinter of the truth — a thin surface layer hiding something far older and more terrifying underneath. What he saw on TV, in novels, in endless fan debates… those were fragments. Pretty lies written for entertainment, glossing over horrors no sane human mind could fully comprehend.
Now, he understood.
He wasn't a spectator here. He wasn't a reader or a player with a walkthrough in hand. He was in it. And those devils — the ones strong enough to seal the World Tree, the very heart of this magical realm — were real. Waiting. Watching.
Nova's arrogance was gone, burned out by the raw, merciless truth of this place. But in its place, something stronger had begun to take root. Resolve. Cunning. A long view of the road ahead. He had a name for his enemy now, and however impossible the task seemed, he would answer it in time.
Because somewhere out there, trades waited to be made. Allies waited to be bought. Knowledge, weapons, and secrets waited to be bargained for. Enemies waited to be hunted.
And this time — it wasn't about profit.
It was about a promise. A quest. And a debt to settle.
With one last glance at the wreckage of the cavern, the scars of his first failure, Nova turned away. He slashed with Demon Dweller ahead and a cut appeared in reality.
Stepping through it, he appeared in a familiar church and heard shouting.
"SISTER LILY, PLEASE MARRY ME!"
A ghost of a laugh escaped him, equal parts humor and weariness.
"Gods and devils on one side, awkward teenage crushes on the other. What a damn multiverse."
