Chapter 18: “Mind if I join you?”
When Emma was sitting at her table recalling her little discussion with the Sorcerer Supreme, her order finally arrived.
What was surprising was that this person had exactly the same life energy as the one who had been following her, which couldn't help but make Emma smile a little.
Though it might seem strange, she was so excited by the idea of fighting. This definitely didn't come from Tsunade, because although the latter is hot-headed, she isn't a fighting maniac.
She didn't dwell on it though, and just ate her lunch with peace of mind. As for the fact that the lunch might be poisoned? She's a ninja, what kind of poison training hasn't she received?
Plus, Tsunade isn't just any normal ninja but has fought against Hanzo and that old hag Chiyo. What kind of poison would she fear?
In fact, after giving Emma the food, the server returned to the kitchen. What was surprising was that someone with the same appearance was lying on the ground.
The chef and some servers were looking at the one who gave Emma the food and were shaking with clear fear in their eyes.
That woman said, "I think you already know who I am. Don't try to play the superhero or you'll lose your life and that of your family. Understand?"
They all nodded without hesitation. Who in the United States doesn't know about the mutants from the Brotherhood, able to change their appearance and who almost successfully killed the President?
That's right, it was Mystique. She was here to recruit the new mutant. Unfortunately, she hadn't had any opportunity, since the latter awakened yesterday and was under government protection until the government suddenly withdrew its surveillance.
Although she didn't know why they did that, her goal was clear: to recruit Emma Müller to their cause.
From their spy in SHIELD, they knew that Emma had miraculous healing abilities and had healed an almost disabled man in twenty seconds, even though she had just awakened her power.
It was very likely she was the third Omega Level mutant in existence. If they could recruit her, everything would be easier.
Even if she thought so, Mystique didn't immediately contact the target. Emma was someone who had served in the military for four years, and she wasn't completely sure if the latter would inform the authorities or use her power against them. She added some poison that could restrict a mutant's power for a very short time, but enough to make contact with the target.
She waited two more minutes for the poison to start taking effect before leaving the kitchen again. She also changed her appearance to that of a very handsome man before approaching Emma's table.
She said with a voice full of confidence, while flashing a smile that would charm 90% of women on Earth, "Mind if I join you?"
The moment the man came into view, Emma raised her eyes and looked at him.
This time, she was almost certain who had been following her: someone able to change appearance, interested in her mutant powers. Who else could it be but Mystique from the Brotherhood of Mutants?
Emma replied with a teasing smile, "Of course, Mr. Raven."
This simple but short answer completely destabilized Mystique. Raven was her human name, and not everyone knew it, even in the Brotherhood. She was usually just known as Mystique.
After being stunned for two seconds, she snapped out of it and sat on the second chair at Emma's table.
She asked, "Since when, and how, did you know it was me?"
It was pretty useless to play dumb and pretend she didn't know who Raven was. Since Emma hadn't even mentioned her mutant name but directly used her human name, she must have been sure it was her. Now, Mystique could only hope that Emma wasn't being used as a trap by the military to lure her in otherwise, she was finished.
Emma chuckled at Raven's reaction. "Hehe, Ms. Raven, I could feel it when someone started following me after I left my apartment."
"Then, when the server came, I felt the same energy signature as the one who had been following me. When the same signature appeared in front of me but with a different appearance, I'd have been a fool not to make the connection, right?"
'Is this another way of using her power?' Mystique thought. 'And she figured it out in just one day after awakening.' Generally speaking, it takes some time for mutants to be able to use their powers, let alone figure out different ways of using them.
Mystique said, "The way you use your power is truly impressive, Ms. Emma. When I change appearance, it's very difficult for anyone to recognize it's not me."
"Well, I'll not beat around the bush. Our Brotherhood of Mutants heard about our new kin who awakened their powers, and we've come to recruit you to join our cause."
Emma was surprised by Mystique's bluntness, but well, Mystique might have figured it was a waste of time to play enigmatic around someone like her.
Emma asked, "I'm curious. You know I'm from the military, right? And I think you should know about my power. It's not something you can handle. So even if that's the case, aren't you worried that I'll report you to the military? Or is it that little poison that gave you this confidence?"
Mystique was caught off guard for the second time. This time, she even started to wonder if Emma had some mind-reading powers.
She said, "It's precisely because you've been in the military that I have some confidence in coming to you. You should have seen the atrocities and experiments they do to mutants."
"They torture them, study them, and experiment on them as if they were some lab rats. We need to unite more than ever if we want to protect ourselves. This is also the intention of our Brotherhood of Mutants."
Emma took a sip of water and said, "Well, you sound so righteous that I want to join you. But unfortunately, your objective isn't just this, right?"
"You want something like mutant supremacy, mutants dominating the Earth, blah blah blah. But, this kind of thing isn't to my taste, unfortunately."
Mystique didn't know how to respond. If it had been a normal civilian who had just awakened their power, it wouldn't have been so difficult. What she feared most right now was that Emma had made some deal with the military. If that were the case, Emma would be a threat to them.
"I think what Ms. Emma said is reasonable. We are all born equal, and no one is superior to another. We should be cooperating for a better world, where humans and mutants live together, rather than fighting a war," said a bald man who suddenly walked toward them from the entrance, accompanied by a team.
