Chapter 28: Chapter 27: Practice
Big White examined the silver-gray wrist guard on his arm and turned to Peter.
"How do I use this?"
"Try keeping your wrist up. There's a trigger, and since your fingers aren't long enough, the trigger's been extended for you," Peter explained. He demonstrated by flicking his wrist, bending his middle and ring fingers to press the suit's trigger. Instantly, a strand of spider silk shot out, adhering to a cup on the desk, which he pulled back effortlessly.
"Looks like you're pretty good at picking up things," Big White commented with a knowing look.
"Why do you say that?" Peter asked, puzzled, repeating the gesture.
"I saw this on TV; it means 'I love you,'" Big White pointed out.
"That's what it means? I had no idea," Peter chuckled, realizing the gesture had another implication.
"Yeah, it's like saying 'I love you' every time you catch a criminal," Big White teased.
"Hopefully, they take it well," Peter laughed.
By this time, Big White was trying the wrist movement, pressing his claw on the trigger. A strand of spider silk shot from his wrist guard, sticking to the wall.
"Release your hand, and the spider silk will detach," Peter instructed.
Soon, the walls were webbed with spider silk, and Big White had mastered using the web shooter.
"What about these webs? Do you collect them later?" Big White asked, observing the mess.
"No, they'll dissolve in an hour or two," Peter explained. "But they'll leave a strong odor, so we'll open the window later."
"Let's move to the next step."
---
On the rooftop of a high-rise building, Big White felt apprehensive.
"Do you think I can swing with spider silk? I'm not as agile as you," Big White admitted. Without his martial arts prowess, he felt vulnerable, fearing a fall could turn him into a "panda pancake."
"Don't worry, I've got you. And you haven't eaten yet, right?" Peter reassured him, posing a question.
"What's that got to do with anything?" Big White asked, peering nervously over the edge.
"Remember when you said chasing me was like chasing a ham? I got you a fried chicken drumstick to spark your talent," Peter revealed, pulling out a juicy drumstick.
Big White swallowed, tempted by the aroma. Though not starving, the sight of the drumstick made his stomach growl.
"So, if you catch up to me with the web, not only is this drumstick yours, but I'll also treat you to a big meal. Deal?"
"Are you sure you've got the cash for that?" Big White doubted, knowing he could eat a lot.
"Uh..." Peter hesitated.
"Just tell me who I'm after and what happened, then take me there. I'll ask the witnesses," Big White suggested, feeling safer waiting for his physical talents to unlock before trying the web.
"Let's give it a shot first. It's not that hard," Peter encouraged. "I promise I won't let you fall," he added, picking up Big White and tossing him off the roof before he could protest.
"Peter!!! You're going to get it!!! Ahhh!!!"
Big White's roar echoed through the city, drawing curious glances from pedestrians below.
As he fell, Big White quickly focused, spotted a target, and shot a web, stopping his descent with a strong elastic pull.
"Hey! You okay?" Peter swung nearby, checking on him.
Big White gripped the web, calming his racing heart.
"Relax, maybe this chicken drumstick will help," Peter teased, waving the drumstick before swinging ahead.
Motivated, Big White shot another web, releasing the first, and began to swing.
"Nice one!" Peter praised, leading the way to 17th Street.
---
The sky over Queens was now home to two figures: Spider-Man and a panda in a coat and bamboo hat, swinging gracefully.
As Big White's web skills improved, he started enjoying the thrill of swinging between skyscrapers.
---
Arriving at 17th Street, Peter landed on a rooftop. But before he could steady himself, his Spider-Sense tingled, and he ducked instinctively.
Big White sailed overhead, landing with a thud. Using the momentum, he leaped and swung a playful punch.
Peter dodged, flipping out of the way.
"Whoa, whoa, let's call a truce, Big White! I'll buy you that big meal, okay?" Peter pleaded, seeing the determined panda approach.
