Chapter 179: Chapter 179 : Alex Deal with God King Odin
Bonus Chapter
----------
Alex Ray looked at Thor in surprise. He hadn't expected that after their fight, Thor would actually come to see him as a friend.
But on second thought, it made sense. For someone as straightforward as Thor, earning respect was just a matter of beating him into submission.
There was no personal conflict between Alex and Thor, but seeing the system reward pop up still pleased him. If he managed to snatch Mjolnir next time, how could Thor even put up a fight?
Thor now greatly admired Alex. He had seen with his own eyes that Alex was a powerful warrior—someone who even defeated Loki using illusions.
That fact delighted Thor. Loki's illusions had always been his Achilles' heel. He'd suffered at his brother's hands countless times.
Now, seeing Alex so easily dismantle those illusions, Thor couldn't help but get fired up.
He declared with full confidence, "Next time, I won't lose again. I'll show you what the real Thor is like!"
Alex smiled and nodded. "I look forward to your challenge."
If each challenge improved his system's friendship level with Thor, Alex wouldn't refuse. Besides, Thor's current strength still wasn't enough to pose a real threat to him.
Only Rune King Thor might give him a challenge—but that version of Thor wasn't here.
Turning away from Thor, Alex looked toward Odin and asked, "I wonder, Lord Odin—was the strength I displayed sufficient?"
Without waiting for a response, Alex turned to the Ancient One. "If there's nothing else, I'll return to Hell's Kitchen. There's still plenty waiting for me there."
Odin seemed quite pleased with Thor's humble response and his willingness to improve after defeat.
He waved a hand, ordering Thor and Loki to withdraw—clearly wanting to speak to Alex alone.
Once they were gone, Odin addressed him. "Young man, your strength is impressive. You're almost catching up to me. That puts me at ease. I can entrust the future to your hands."
"I hope you'll continue helping Thor and Loki. Thor's still growing. I'll be arranging for him to train on Midgard soon, and I hope you won't interfere."
Alex gave a faint smile but grumbled inwardly, Odin really treats Earth like a playground. Still, as long as they didn't cause trouble in Hell's Kitchen, he didn't care what they did.
The Destroyer incident in Thor had leveled a small town—luckily sparsely populated. If it had landed elsewhere, the damage would've been catastrophic.
Alex wasn't aware that S.H.I.E.L.D. had changed significantly. Nick Fury was long gone.
He assumed those kinds of messes were still S.H.I.E.L.D.'s problem.
Taking a breath, Alex understood Odin's deeper meaning.
On the surface, Odin seemed to be asking for help. In reality, he was assigning a task—expecting Alex to keep Thor and Loki in check after Odin's death.
Alex chuckled, shook his head slightly, and replied calmly, "Your Majesty Odin, you flatter me. But I'm afraid I lack the ability to help Thor and Loki. They're both immensely talented. I'm sure they'll surpass me in no time."
No sooner had he said that than he sensed a subtle pressure radiating from Odin.
The All-Father clearly wasn't satisfied with his answer.
But Alex didn't care.
Why do all these ancient powerhouses want to set up their own death flags? The Ancient One, sure—that's part of the 'script.' But Odin? The guy isn't even dying—he just wants to retire and throw responsibility onto others.
Otherwise, Thanos wouldn't have waited until both of them were gone before attacking Earth.
That said, Thanos was only slightly weaker than Odin or the Ancient One. More importantly, he was cautious and rarely acted without absolute certainty.
As Alex thought it over, it occurred to him that his strength now wasn't far off from Thanos'.
But more than anything, he hated cleaning up other people's messes. He already had too much on his plate—managing Hell's Kitchen, handling the multiverse, and unraveling cross-universe entanglements.
Now they wanted to hand him two divine delinquents to babysit? Just the thought gave him a headache.
But then Odin said something that made him reconsider.
"Of course," Odin added, his tone serious, "I won't let your efforts go unrewarded. I grant you the right to choose one item from my treasure vault—as compensation for assisting us."
His voice was full of sincerity, leaving no room for refusal.
Even Alex was caught off guard. The Ancient One, usually calm and unmoved, turned to glance at Odin with rare surprise.
She knew full well the kind of items Odin's treasury contained—spoils of war, ancient artifacts, and legendary relics collected over millennia. Each one priceless. Each one highly coveted.
The Ancient One couldn't help but marvel at how highly Odin valued Alex. Odin was famously stingy. He usually took other people's things—and if they didn't give them willingly, he'd just seize them by force.
Yet today, he offered something from his vault freely, without hesitation. Even the Ancient One hadn't expected that.
Not that she needed weapons—but if she did, she'd probably be tempted herself.
More importantly, she hadn't realized just how much Odin respected Alex.
Seeing Odin's generosity only solidified the Ancient One's conviction that finding Alex Ray was the right call.
Seems like I'll need to prepare a gift for Alex myself, she mused.
She had believed she'd already placed enough value on Alex. Now it seemed she'd underestimated him.
Alex blinked in disbelief. "Any one item?"
Odin nodded. "Yes. Any one."
Hearing that, Alex admitted to himself—he was tempted.
Especially since, system rewards aside, he'd probably have to help clean up Thor and Loki's messes anyway. And considering Loki's status as the potential God of Stories, Alex had a hunch they'd cross paths again—many times over.
Might as well get paid for it.
He nodded and accepted Odin's proposal.
Odin immediately ordered someone to escort Alex to the treasury.
Only after Alex had completely left the temple did the Ancient One speak again. "What do you think, Your Majesty Odin?"
"We're old friends, Ancient One," Odin replied. "And that young man… is very strong. Far stronger than I was at his age."
"That's not what I meant," the Ancient One said, clearly unsatisfied.
"Well, I can't see anything either," Odin admitted. "And frankly, you don't need to ask me. You're the one who sees the future, aren't you?"
"That's exactly it—I can't see his future," she replied. "So why give him access to the vault? His future is filled with too many uncertainties."
"Not just him," Odin said thoughtfully. "Everyone around him has had their future altered. I only know one thing—his enemies won't be limited to this universe. They'll come from across the multiverse. And so will his allies."
The Ancient One fell silent.
"Let the next generation worry about the future, Ancient One," Odin said gently. "We're fading away. Why burden ourselves?"
"I used to believe that," she replied. "But some people refuse to stay dead. They come back to 'teach' their worthless sons even after passing."
