Chapter 178: Chapter 178 : Kyoka Suigetsu
Loki's eyes widened in shock as he saw Alex Ray suddenly appear behind him, his face filled with disbelief. He immediately turned to look at the person he had been holding hostage, only to find that the figure had transformed into an Asgardian palace guard.
Loki's expression twisted with rage. He flung the soldier aside and glared at Alex with icy fury.
But his anger didn't last long. Composing himself quickly, he forced a smile back onto his face.
"I didn't expect you to be capable of illusion," Loki said, his tone laced with feigned admiration. But his eyes were cold enough to send a chill down anyone's spine.
As the God of Mischief, Loki had always been the one playing tricks on others. The idea that a mere mortal had just outplayed him in his own domain was deeply humiliating.
He swore to himself that he'd make Alex suffer for this—publicly, in front of Odin and Frigga.
Still, Loki didn't believe Alex's illusion abilities were anything worth fearing.
He told himself he'd merely been careless.
As long as he stayed alert, he was certain he could neutralize Alex's illusions.
He calmly started calculating his next move. In Loki's mind, Alex's illusion depended on that sword—Kyoka Suigetsu—and likely required a chant or incantation to activate. As long as he paid attention, he could counter it.
"I admit defeat," Loki said smoothly. "Isn't it time you put that sword away?"
He was hoping to lull Alex into dropping his guard.
Alex, however, had been watching Loki's expressions closely. He didn't believe a word of it.
He knew Loki hadn't truly surrendered—he was stalling, looking for an opening.
Still, Alex summoned the Kyoka Suigetsu Zanpakuto from the air and deliberately appeared to return it to his system's inventory.
"Kyoka Suigetsu is not as simple as you think," he thought quietly to himself.
Loki didn't understand the true power behind the blade—its perfect hypnosis. That ignorance made him an easy mark.
Seeing Alex seemingly stow the weapon away, Loki's eyes gleamed with malicious glee. A smirk crept across his face.
In the blink of an eye, he reappeared behind Alex, silently pressing a dagger to his back.
"You lost because you didn't use your sword," Loki said smugly from behind him. "Looks like I'm still the better one."
But then, the Loki who had been standing across from Alex vanished—just an illusion.
Loki was confident he'd finally caught Alex off guard. He'd watched Alex dismiss the sword and had even scanned the area for illusion traces. Nothing. He was sure Alex hadn't used any tricks this time.
He'd won. A mortal couldn't possibly surpass the God of Trickery at his own game. Loki silently reveled in his perceived victory.
But then he saw Alex smirk.
Loki's expression hardened. Why wasn't Alex panicking? Was he relying on Odin's presence, assuming Loki wouldn't dare kill him here?
Just as the confusion swelled within him, a familiar and sarcastic voice spoke behind him.
"Lord Loki, I know you don't like your brother—and yes, he can be a bit thick—but you can't kill him in front of Odin and your mother."
Loki froze, a deep dread crawling up his spine.
Though he despised Thor and held a long-standing grudge, Loki knew he could never cross that final line—not in front of Odin and Frigga.
To strike Thor here would be an unforgivable act.
He turned around sharply—and there stood Alex, not far off, smirking.
Startled, Loki glanced at the figure he'd been threatening.
His blood ran cold. The person he had mistaken for Alex was, in fact, Thor.
An overwhelming wave of confusion and fear washed over him.
He had detected no illusion fluctuations. No hint of magic. No casting, no chant. Nothing.
How had Alex done this?
He let go of Thor and muttered under his breath, trying to make sense of it all.
Alex, watching Loki spiral, simply sneered.
"When," Alex said, "did you fall under the illusion that I hadn't used Kyoka Suigetsu?"
The sarcasm in his tone was sharp enough to cut.
Loki's fists clenched with fury and humiliation, but he knew he had to explain himself—now.
He dropped to one knee before Odin and swore that he had no intention of harming Thor. It was all a misunderstanding, he insisted.
Still, his heart was boiling with hatred for Alex Ray.
He vowed that the moment he ascended the throne of Asgard, Alex would be the first to pay.
Odin's eyes remained fixed on Loki for a long moment before he waved his hand.
"Enough," he said. His calm demeanor eased the tension slightly.
Loki breathed out slowly, seeing Odin's forgiveness in the gesture.
But Odin's mind was elsewhere.
He knew the true puppeteer behind this little performance was none other than the mortal—Alex Ray.
Even Odin hadn't expected Alex's mastery over illusion to be so refined.
It had taken every ounce of Odin's perception to see through it. Had this not been his own palace—his territory—he might have been completely fooled.
And all of it, Odin believed, came not from the sword, but from Alex himself. The Kyoka Suigetsu was, in his mind, merely a smokescreen to distract and mislead enemies.
Without Alex, the blade was just that—a blade. Odin believed he'd seen through it.
But he was wrong.
The illusion truly was the power of Kyoka Suigetsu, and Alex himself didn't even know how to perform illusions on his own.
He hadn't used the blade to show off. In his eyes, Loki was just a clever trickster—not a threat.
Back in Hell's Kitchen, Alex had tenants stronger than Loki. Some of them could see through illusions easily using Observation Haki.
No, Alex hadn't used Kyoka Suigetsu to flaunt.
He'd used it to test its limits.
So far, it had worked well enough to deceive even Thor and Loki—both powerful beings at the sub-god level.
But against beings like Odin or the Ancient One, whose powers were truly god-tier, it wouldn't hold.
By the way, Alex mentally noted—Captain Marvel probably also belonged in the sub-god category.
As Alex mulled things over, Thor approached with a grin and clapped him on the shoulder.
"Warrior," Thor said, "what should I call you? I've never seen anyone outdo Loki in illusion before. I'll admit it—you're strong."
