Chapter 169: Chapter 169 : Telepathy and System Harvest
At the moment Alex Ray was about to step onto the stairs, Cyclops—Scott Summers—couldn't help but feel curious and doubtful.
He took a few steps forward and asked nervously, "Alex, aren't you afraid mutants might suddenly break into Hell's Kitchen and bring disaster here? We were enemies before—so is it really that easy for you to trust us?"
Scott's questions were not unfounded.
After all, they had just been in a standoff, and although the X-Men team was basically defeated, Alex was now showing an extraordinary level of trust, which was difficult to understand.
But Scott didn't intend to eavesdrop. The space in the restaurant was limited, and he and the other mutants couldn't help but overhear the conversation between Alex and Professor Charles Xavier.
After hearing Scott's words, Alex paused mid-step on the stairs. He felt the eyes of everyone around him focus on him.
He didn't turn around but tilted his head slightly and said in a calm and firm voice, "As for me, I believe in my family, I believe in Hell's Kitchen, and of course I believe in you—all of you—because we are all the same kind of people."
This sentence seemed like a reassurance, putting everyone present at ease.
Alex's words revealed a sense of trust and tolerance that eased the previously tense atmosphere.
When Scott heard Alex's words, he felt an indescribable shame well up inside him.
He was ashamed of his previous hostility toward Hell's Kitchen and regretted the misunderstandings and attacks.
He looked at Alex deeply, then lowered his head in silent reflection.
Jean Grey and Ororo Munroe exchanged glances. They sensed a strange power in Alex's words.
They began to develop a strong interest in Hell's Kitchen and a desire to learn more about the place and its people.
Professor Xavier was very satisfied with Alex's response. He admired Alex's kindness and tolerance, thinking that Alex possessed the same noble qualities he did.
He believed that under Alex's leadership, Hell's Kitchen would surely see a brighter future.
Stephen Strange, who was about to take the elevator upstairs, heard Alex's words and smiled quietly.
"This guy Alex Ray really does trust people easily," Strange muttered to himself.
But he understood that this was precisely Alex's charm.
He was willing to trust others and willing to give trust in return.
This was why Alex was the only true friend Strange had in all his years at college—and why Strange was willing to risk his life to come and save Alex.
Alex went upstairs and slumped onto the sofa. So many things had happened today that he was utterly exhausted.
To be honest, Alex certainly wouldn't trust others so easily. The reason he agreed to the mutants' request was entirely because he glanced at the system prompts.
The top prompt was no longer the latest, because it was triggered by what Alex had just said:
"Congratulations to the host, Erik Lehnsherr's friendship level has been upgraded to two stars."
"Congratulations to the host, Erik Lehnsherr's friendship level has been raised to full stars."
"Congratulations host, Erik Lehnsherr has become your family member."
"Congratulations host, Charles Xavier has successfully added you as a friend; current friend rating is one star."
"Congratulations to the host, Charles Xavier's friendship level has been upgraded to three stars."
"Congratulations to the host for gaining telepathy."
"Should we merge now?"
Alex saw that many mutants had become friends with him, which made him feel relieved—there were too many system prompts today.
He didn't have time to look closely but was pleased to see that he now possessed one of Professor Xavier's more complex abilities.
He quickly thought to himself, "Merge immediately."
The next moment, a powerful energy surged into Alex's mind.
It was a wonderful and profound sensation, as if his consciousness had expanded infinitely, transcending spatial constraints.
Alex tried to use this new ability and found he could read other people's thoughts and memories from a distance.
Just as he was immersed in the amazing world of telepathy, the sound of negotiations downstairs caught his attention.
Professor Xavier and Wanda Maximoff were talking, and suddenly Professor Xavier frowned, as if sensing something.
He looked upstairs toward where Alex was.
Erik Lehnsherr noticed Charles's change and asked with concern, "What's wrong, Charles?"
Xavier shook his head, trying to hide his shock. "Nothing. Maybe it's just my imagination."
His heart was filled with doubt. He could clearly sense that someone nearby had the same ability as him.
Of course, it was possible he was overthinking. After all, this world was full of unknowns and miracles.
"I'm glad you're okay. If you are, could you lend me some money?" Erik asked embarrassedly.
Magneto was genuinely short on cash, but since he couldn't confront Alex or talk to Wanda, he had to ask his old friend for help.
At the same time, Alex upstairs also realized that his telepathy might have been detected by Professor Xavier.
He immediately exited the telepathic state.
"This skill is really powerful. It feels like no one has any secrets in front of this ability," Alex exclaimed.
As expected of Professor Xavier—this power was extraordinary.
Alex continued to check the system information and found that due to his recent interactions, the X-Men had mostly raised their friendship level with him to two stars.
Unfortunately, he hadn't gained any random new abilities.
Especially the Phoenix power on Jean Grey's body was not randomly obtained.
Stephen Strange's friendship level had risen to five stars.
Alex looked at Strange, who had been given surgical skills, and sighed silently: "My old friend, you should quickly become Sorcerer Supreme. That way, whatever magic you learn, I'll learn too."
Alex had anticipated that Strange had been training hard in Kamar-Taj for two and a half years, and had thought he could beat him when he returned—but now their magic levels were equal.
Of course, Alex also saw some interesting messages from other friends:
"Congratulations host, Natasha Romanoff has successfully added you as a friend; current favorability is one star."
"Congratulations host, Ben Grimm has successfully added you as a friend; current favorability is two stars."
"Congratulations host, Susan Storm has successfully added you as a friend; current favorability is one star."
"Congratulations host, Bruce Banner has successfully added you as a friend; current favorability is three stars."
These were Black Widow, The Thing, Invisible Woman, and The Hulk.
Alex hadn't expected to gain a few more superhero friends just by saving people. What surprised him most was how high Dr. Banner's favorability was.
Although these friends didn't help Alex gain better abilities, Alex had a habit of collecting "stamps" from his friends.
Now that he was in the Marvel Universe, he definitely wanted to meet all the superheroes.
Of course, Alex wouldn't go out of his way to make friends with anyone. He always took the attitude of letting things take their course—it would be bad if he was too deliberate.
Alex organized his thoughts and prepared to rest.
Tomorrow, he would have an exciting lottery session ahead.
