Chapter 15: Hammer Time, Spy Games, Adam's Agency on the Case
With Ivan Vanko safely (and humiliatingly) apprehended, the focus shifted. Tony Stark was still battling his inner demons and palladium poisoning, but a new, equally annoying villain had emerged from the shadows: Justin Hammer. The man was a walking, talking inferiority complex, desperate to outshine Stark, and now, foolishly, collaborating with Vanko. Adam, back in his agency's command center, felt a familiar weariness.
"Justin Hammer. The poor man's Tony Stark. Honestly, it's almost sad. Almost. Until he starts building killer robots. Then it's just annoying. Good thing I've got a team that can hack anything and analyze everything. And a whole lot of invisibility."
"Alright, team," Adam said, gesturing to the holographic displays showing Hammer Industries' schematics. "Hammer. Vanko. Bad combo. Skye, I need you to get deep into Hammer Industries' systems. Find me everything on their drone program, their weapons sales, anything that smells like 'illicit collaboration with a disgruntled Russian genius.'"
"Consider it done, boss," Skye replied, her fingers already flying across her keyboard, a mischievous grin on her face. "Hammer's firewalls are… quaint. Like something from the early 2000s. This is going to be a cakewalk."
"Jemma, I need you to analyze these schematics for Vanko's arc reactor tech," Adam continued, pushing a data chip across the table. "See if there are any backdoors, any weaknesses, anything that could give us an edge when these things inevitably go rogue."
Jemma, already poring over the data, hummed. "The energy signature is remarkably similar to Stark's, but the efficiency is… appalling. It's like a brilliant idea executed by someone who learned engineering from a comic book."
"Close enough," Adam muttered. "Now, for the fun part."
He activated his Invisibility, melting into the air. He needed to get into Hammer's facilities, plant some bugs, gather some physical evidence, and maybe, just maybe, make Hammer's life a little more miserable.
He slipped into Hammer Industries' main R&D lab, a chaotic mess of half-finished projects and discarded coffee cups. He found Hammer himself, strutting around, barking orders at terrified engineers.
Adam decided to start small. Hammer was holding a cup of coffee, pontificating loudly.
[Illusions & Holograms activated. Target: Optic Nerves. Effect: Coffee to Jell-O.]
Hammer took a dramatic sip. His eyes widened. He pulled the cup away, staring into it. The dark liquid had solidified into a shimmering, suspiciously lime-green Jell-O. He blinked, poked it with a spoon, then looked around, a flicker of confusion crossing his usually smug face.
"What?! My coffee! It's… it's gelatinous! Who did this?! This is an outrage!" Hammer bellowed.
Adam, unseen, chuckled. "Phase one: The Gelatinous Gambit, corporate edition. Never gets old."
He continued his infiltration, planting miniature surveillance devices, subtly altering data on Hammer's personal computer, making sure the incriminating evidence would be easy for Skye to find. He even managed to subtly swap out a key component in a drone prototype with a harmless, brightly colored toy, knowing it would cause a hilarious malfunction later.
Meanwhile, back at the agency, Skye was having a field day. "Adam, you won't believe this! Hammer's been selling weapons to… well, to basically anyone with a credit card and a bad attitude! And the drone plans are even worse than we thought. They're basically flying death traps, designed to fail spectacularly."
"Excellent," Adam said, his voice a disembodied whisper through the comms. "Keep digging, Skye. Jemma, any weaknesses on those schematics?"
"Yes! The power coupling is incredibly unstable," Jemma replied, her voice excited. "A precise energy pulse could overload it, rendering the drones inert. But it would have to be incredibly precise."
"Precise, huh? Good to know."
Later, Adam found himself crossing paths with Natasha Romanoff again. She was also investigating Hammer, albeit through official S.H.I.E.L.D. channels. They met in a crowded cafe, ostensibly for a "chance" encounter.
"Mr. Stiels," Natasha said, her voice smooth, her eyes assessing him. "Fancy meeting you here. Still chasing phantom leads?"
"Agent Rushman," Adam replied, a playful glint in his eye. "And you? Still pretending to be a glorified secretary?"
Natasha's lips twitched. "Some of us prefer to operate… discreetly."
"Oh, I know all about discreet," Adam said, leaning back in his chair. "In fact, I'd say I'm practically the poster child for discreet. So discreet, you might not even know I'm there." He subtly activated his Invisibility for a split second, just enough for a flicker, a momentary blur in her peripheral vision.
Natasha's eyes narrowed. She blinked, then looked directly at him, a faint, almost imperceptible smirk on her face. "Interesting parlor trick, Mr. Stiels. But I assure you, I always know who's in the room."
"Do you now?" Adam challenged, his grin widening. "Then perhaps you can tell me how Justin Hammer's coffee keeps turning into Jell-O."
Natasha's eyes widened almost imperceptibly, a genuine flicker of surprise. Then, a low, amused chuckle escaped her lips. "You did that? You're even more of a menace than I thought."
"It's a gift," Adam said, shrugging. "So, what's S.H.I.E.L.D.'s take on Hammer's latest follies? Anything juicy?"
Natasha leaned forward, a hint of genuine interest in her eyes. "Let's just say, Mr. Stiels, that Justin Hammer is about to have a very bad day. And I have a feeling you'll be enjoying the show."
"Oh, I will, Natasha. I absolutely will. And maybe, just maybe, I'll even get you to crack a real smile. That's a challenge I'm willing to take."
