Manga World: Extracting Superman's Power

Chapter 20: 20 - Ask Yotsuya Miko for help! Thermal vision destroys evil spirits!

"Then it's settled! Ran, you better not back out!"

Sonoko pointed a finger at Ran with a grin.

"Definitely not, but I'll have to check with my dad about coming," Ran nodded.

"Azuma, we're set! No bailing at the last minute, got it?" Sonoko turned to him.

"Don't worry, Miss Sonoko's inviting me—I wouldn't dream of ditching," Azuma said with a smile.

But inwardly, he was curious.

Kosai Island?

An island 120 kilometers east of Japan, 3,000 square kilometers big?

He should've heard of it.

"There's no such island from my past life. Something's up," he thought.

Still, now that he had Superman's powers, he wasn't about to steer clear of a potentially shady spot. He was actually looking forward to this weekend trip!

School let out at 4:00 PM. Azuma packed up, said bye to Sonoko and Ran, and left the classroom with his backpack.

Class 2-C was right next to 2-B. As students trickled out, Azuma spotted Miko Yotsuya among them, looking exhausted—dark circles under her eyes. Beside her, Hana Yurikawa practically radiated energy.

"She saw something again, huh?" Azuma thought, heading their way.

"Yotsuya, did you stay up all night?" he asked as he approached.

Miko looked up, listless, her pupils shrinking slightly before she casually shifted her gaze. "No, just couldn't sleep well."

"Oh, gotcha. Hey, Yotsuya, could you help me with something in a bit?" Azuma asked.

"Help? With what?" Miko asked, puzzled.

"Nothing big—just need you to point me in a direction," he said with a smile.

"Huh? Looking for a place? I just moved here, though—I'm not that familiar with the area," Miko said. "I probably can't help much."

"No, this is something only you can do," Azuma said, winking at her.

Miko froze, then realization hit. She stared at him, shocked.

"So? Will you help?" he asked again.

"Yeah, sure!"

This time, Miko didn't hesitate—she nodded firmly.

She turned to her best friend beside her. "Hana, head home without me today. I've got something to handle with Azuma."

"Huh? I can't come along?" Hana blinked at them.

"Yurikawa, next time I'll treat you and Yotsuya to a meal, but today I need to borrow her for a bit. Cool with you?" Azuma said, looking at Hana.

"Food!!"

Hana's eyes lit up instantly.

"Deal! Yotsuya, go with Azuma—don't worry about me!" she chirped.

"Alright, see you tomorrow, Hana," Miko said.

"Yep, tomorrow!"

Hana waved, her smile turning her eyes into crescent moons.

"Azuma, don't forget the food!" she called, still waving.

"Promise—tomorrow," Azuma replied. He nodded to Miko, and they hurried toward the stairs.

Behind them, Hana was already debating tomorrow's menu.

Barbecue? Sushi?

Oh, why not both?

She was stuck in a tough—but delicious—dilemma.

Teitan High's back hill.

A wooded area, usually quiet. After school, it was downright deserted.

Azuma led Miko here, then stopped and turned to her.

"Yotsuya, I need you to point me in a direction. If there's nothing, just say so."

His words were vague, but Miko got it.

He wanted her to pinpoint an evil spirit—or confirm there wasn't one nearby.

"That way," she said, taking a deep breath and pointing behind Azuma to his left.

He turned, following her finger, but saw nothing.

This morning, he'd tried spotting the evil spirits wandering the city. Nothing all day.

It made him wonder if his Clark-derived super vision couldn't detect these spectral things.

After all…

Superman was pure physical power.

Evil spirits? Magic-side stuff.

Not seeing them kinda made sense.

But if he couldn't see them, how could he test if his attacks worked?

He couldn't just blast everything blindly.

"Still there?" he asked.

Miko, now sweating, nodded.

In her vision, a terrifying spirit hovered diagonally above Azuma's back—black mist swirling around it, its wrinkled face sporting two hollow black eye sockets.

And…

It was staring right at her.

Miko's heart raced. She had no clue what Azuma was up to, but she hoped he'd hurry—her nerves were fraying.

"Good enough," Azuma said.

He couldn't see a thing, oblivious to the horror Miko was facing.
