Manga World: Extracting Superman's Power

Chapter 19: 19 - Conan Becomes Kogoro Mouri’s Apprentice? Sonoko’s Invitation, Kosai Island!

Teitan High School, Class B, Year 2 classroom.

Azuma Shoyo walked in with his backpack, sat at his desk, and barely settled in before Sonoko Suzuki leaned over.

"Azuma, have you heard?"

Sonoko asked, her face lit up with gossip.

"Heard what?" Azuma replied.

"You know Dr. Agasa, the guy who lives next to Kudo? Apparently, a kid from his relatives showed up, and last night, he went and apprenticed himself under Ran's dad!" Sonoko said, sounding all dramatic.

"Sonoko!"

Ran huffed from the side. "Why do you make it sound like my dad's some lousy detective?!"

"Huh? Isn't he, though?" Sonoko blinked at Ran innocently.

Ran: "???"

"Hahaha! Just kidding, Ran—don't get mad!" Sonoko laughed, throwing an arm around Ran's.

Ran wasn't really upset.

After all…

She knew exactly what her dad was like—being his daughter and all.

Still…

Last night, her dad had actually impressed her for once.

Meanwhile, Sonoko, adding her usual flair, filled Azuma in on what happened. She'd heard it from Ran, of course—she hadn't been there herself.

Once she finished, Azuma pieced it together: last night was the debut of "Sleeping Kogoro."

"What's the kid's name?" Azuma asked.

"Edogawa Conan. Weird name, right?" Sonoko said.

"Right, Ran?"

Ran nodded. "Yeah, it's pretty strange."

Yup!

Kudo had officially shrunk into a kid.

Back in the day, Azuma might've avoided Conan—the little grim reaper—like the plague.

The kid was a walking death magnet. Wherever he went, someone died.

Sure, it was usually just one or two people at a time.

But the sheer frequency? Insane!

Now, though…

With Superman's powers under his belt, Azuma had zero fear of Conan, the pint-sized harbinger of doom.

In fact…

He was kinda intrigued by the little guy.

"Sounds like an interesting kid," Azuma said with a smile. "Is he staying at your place now?"

Ran shook her head.

"No, Conan's living with Dr. Agasa. I heard he even hired a nanny for him."

Huh?

Conan wasn't crashing at Ran's place?

That caught Azuma off guard.

A plot deviation?

Made sense, though.

This wasn't just the Conan world—it was an anime multiverse. Some differences were bound to pop up.

Like Miko Yotsuya and Hana Yurikawa transferring in.

In their original story, they didn't go to Teitan High.

The deviations were there, but not massive.

At least Conan had still apprenticed under Kogoro Mouri, becoming a detective-in-training.

Wonder how much Dr. Agasa shelled out for Kogoro's "tuition"?

No cash, no way Kogoro would've agreed to babysit—his lazy ass hated extra work.

Morning classes—three periods—wrapped up.

Sonoko dragged Azuma to the cafeteria for lunch.

He used to eat alone, but ever since they'd gone to cheer Ran on at her match, he and Sonoko had gotten closer.

Even Ran noticed. She'd quietly asked Sonoko once, "Do you like Azuma-kun?"

Sonoko's answer?

"Of course! He's hot. He used to be super standoffish, but he's opened up a lot lately."

Ran thought about it—yeah, she was right.

These past few days, Azuma had seemed way more outgoing.

"Did you ask him about it?" Ran asked, curious.

"Nope, but it doesn't matter!" Sonoko said with a carefree grin. "I like him, and that's enough. If he's not into me, we'll just stay friends."

Ran: "!!!"

Hearing that, Ran suddenly felt a twinge of envy.

She'd never envied Sonoko before—not her crazy wealth or status.

But now, seeing Sonoko's bold, love-it-or-leave-it attitude, Ran couldn't help it.

If only she could be that free.

Then maybe she and Shinichi wouldn't have dragged out their feelings this long without confessing.

In the school cafeteria…

Sonoko nibbled at her food, sneaking glances at Azuma across the table.

After a few times, Azuma sighed helplessly.

"Sonoko, can you just eat? There's no food on my face."

"Azuma, did something good happen? You seem so upbeat today—like you're glowing," Sonoko said, chewing her chopsticks and studying him.

"Do I?" Azuma hadn't noticed, but he was in a great mood. Finally having some self-defense power in this world? How could he not be thrilled?

"It's nothing big. Just a problem that's been bugging me forever finally got solved, so I'm feeling good," he said.

"Oh, congrats then!" Sonoko grinned. "To celebrate, how about we hit Kosai Island this weekend?"

"Ran, you too—bring your dad along!" she added, turning to Ran with an invite for Kogoro.

"Kosai Island? What's that?"

Azuma had never heard of it.

"I know this one," Ran chimed in. "It's a big island about 120 kilometers east of Japan—nearly 3,000 square kilometers. Bigger than all of Tokyo!"

"Right! They just opened a horror-themed amusement park there. It's launching this Saturday—over 30,000 pre-sale tickets sold already!" Sonoko said, beaming. "So, wanna go?"

"Horror-themed amusement park?" Azuma nodded. "Sure, but can we still get tickets?"

"Leave that to me!" Sonoko said with a confident smirk.

Fair enough.

With the Suzuki conglomerate's clout, snagging a few tickets was child's play!
