Chapter 154 A life for a life
The ceiling turned dark immediately.
Lightning sparked through the air like webs of light, there was only one thing he could do and he did just that.
[Wind Stride]
Xavier dashed away towards Sylve, instead of being apart from her, he could hide under her shield and help with his barrier.
The black miasma which helped him against the ice Hydra hadn't shown since then, he had no idea how to activate it or what the conditions are for that, or maybe he needed to be in a danger that he couldn't help himself out.
Dragonborn's staff glowed with power as he looked down on them, calm and confident.
He had taken hits, sure, but he wasn't even breathing hard, everything was under his control, since it was all the ceiling there was no where they could run off to, so their best bet was to block.
Xavier stood with his sword ready, body trembling from the pain. His side was bleeding, ribs broken, and the small burns from earlier shocks still stung across his arms.
Most of his wounds had healed but he still felt the pain.
Sylve stood a few feet behind him, her staff glowing faintly. She was sweating, shaking too, but still alive.
"Let's finish this," Dragonborn said with a grin.
He raised his staff again.
And the lightning came.
A massive bolt of raw power fell from above, faster than anything they'd seen so far, but before he didn't Sylve was already ready, instead of trying to run she was planning on taking the hit.
"Earth Guard"
A thick dome of rock rose above her and Xavier.
*BOOM!*
The entire ground shook as the lightning smashed into it. The rock cracked, split, and broke apart into glowing debris.
Xavier felt like gravity was pulling him down as he went on one knees, even though the earth shielded them, the impact was still felt and Xavier used his barrier above them.
Xavier coughed as dust filled the air.
"Are you okay?" Sylve asked behind him.
"I'm fine…" he lied, his voice weak.
They couldn't take another hit like that.
Xavier took a step forward but staggered. He was running out of strength. His Mana was low, and the healing from [Self Regeneration] was slowing down.
Dragonborn walked forward, slow and calm, like a hunter closing in on wounded prey. Lightning danced across his fingers.
"Still standing?" he asked. "You should've stayed down."
Xavier charged anyway.
He pushed his pain away and swung his sword—Dragonborn dodged easily and punched him in the chest.
CRACK!
Xavier flew back again, his body rolling across the broken earth. He could barely move now. He tried to stand but his leg buckled.
He was done, Xavier was out of options, even with his [Arcane Siphon], he didn't have any spell that could rival Dragonborn, all his attempts so far was futile.
He was taking damage faster than his [Regeneration] could keep up.
But Sylve stepped forward, she didn't help him up and just walked past him on the ground.
She just stared at Dragonborn, breathing heavily.
"…Sylve," Xavier said, coughing. He had nothing to say, if Sylve faced him one on one now she was definitely going to die.
Sylve turned towards Xavier a smile on her face, Xavier looked at her. Her eyes weren't filled with fear. They were calm. Too calm.
"You're going to survive" Sylve spoke with a bright smile and continued walking forward then it hit him, she was prepared to die.
Sylve has told him she had a forbidden spell that would take her life, and it seems like that was what she was planning to.
"…Don't do it," he said.
She smiled faintly.
"You know what I have to do, don't worry... I'm sure you can beat the last stage"
"Sylve. Stop—"
"We can't win," she said, still smiling, but tears ran down her cheeks. "You know it. His Mana's not going down. We've hit him, cut him, crushed him, but nothing works. He just keeps coming."
Dragonborn was in front of them hearing them speak, his lips were curled into a smile, he could attack right now but he wanted to see what a mage who wasn't half his strength could do.
Xavier tried to sit up, but even that was hard.
"Sylve, we'll find another..." Xavier tried to stand but even his legs were too weak to hold him up.
She looked down at him.
"You saved me more times than I can count, not just in battle, and you made me experience joy" she said. "Let me do this one thing right."
Xavier shook his head. "We'll find another way. There's always a way."
Her staff glowed softly but she place it on the ground stopping the glow and then both of her hands were lit up by a bright light.
The light around her hands turned golden, then white, then a deep violet.
Dragonborn stopped staring now, he could tell she was gathering an insane amount of Mana, and it shouldn't be even possible given that she had burn through most of her Mana.
"…What are you doing?" he asked, eyes narrowing.
Sylve didn't answer.
Xavier closed his eyes as the light was getting too bright, he tried to open them as Sylve spoke.
[Light of the Grave Bloom]
Sylve's body began to glow, her skin pulsing with white light. Her feet lifted off the ground as the air around her turned still.
Even the lightning stopped crackling.
Dragonborn took a step back. For the first time, he looked unsure, he knew this was different.
"You think I'll let you finish that?" he snapped, raising his staff.
He fired a bolt of lightning towards her, but Sylve didn't make any attempts to move.
"SYLVE!" Xavier screamed.
The bolt hit her square in the chest—But it didn't matter, the light around her absorbed it, like water into flame.
Her voice was soft, like a whisper as she spoke.
"For the ones who died before us. For the ones who'll come after."
Her body cracked with glowing lines, like her very soul was breaking open.
"Don't forget me, Xavier...even though we spent a short time together, I love you"
Then—She exploded.
Not in fire, not in lightning—But in light.
A blinding sphere of white, gold, and violet swallowed the battlefield.
Dragonborn screamed as he tried to run but he couldn't.
His body lifted off the ground as the light surrounded him, piercing through his lightning cloak, through his Mana, through everything. It wrapped around him like vines of pure energy, dragging him down.
He tried to blast his way out, but the light only grew stronger, binding tighter.
Xavier could barely see, barely breathe.
Then the light pulsed once.
And everything went still.
