Chapter 14: 15
Daniel was going to kill Gun. Not only had he woken up alone again but he had woken up feeling like he had just been run over by a truck several times over. If it hadn't been because of his injuries from the arena fight it was most definitely because of Gun fucking him like there was no tomorrow.
"Stupid Gun and his stupid cock" Daniel grunts as he drags himself upright. Much to his surprise, he was back in his room, having woken up there instead of in the medical room. He was clean, not the sight or smell of cum on him and if it weren't for the hickeys and sore hips he would have thought he imagined everything.
What he does smell is breakfast, propped up on his desk with some medicine and a note. Hobbling upwards and struggling to walk over he reads the note.
'Had to get to work, I'll see you later'
Daniel sighs. Despite leaving him alone after having taken his virginity and nearly killing him with his cock, the Doctor couldn't help but find the note and action cute.
'Cute?'
Slapping himself in the face Daniel couldn't help but shake his head.
"Jong Gun Park is not cute" He states, talking to himself like a madman. "I must be even more injured than I thought I was" He grunts before grabbing the food and eating it and then downing a couple of pills.
'Or perhaps he had lost a few brain cells after all that pounding Gun had subjected him to'
Later on when Daniel finally goes to inspect the mess that he and Gun made the previous night (In the morning?) He finds that the bed they had sex on had been cleaned. The evidence of their actions was gone.
"Maybe the brute is more considerate than I thought" He hums as he sits on his chair with a wince. "Still, I can't believe I desecrated my workspace" He huffs, looking away from the bed before more images from the heated night come back to him.
Daniel decided that if Gun wasn't going to make a big deal about taking his first time then he shouldn't either. The Doctors heard from loads of people, and read and watched lots of books and shows that say that your first time should be memorable. That it should be treated delicately.
His first time was definitely not done with delicacy in mind but at least it was memorable. At the end of the day, it was just sex. An action that is completed to relieve stress and encourage pleasure. It meant nothing.
That final thought stung Daniel slightly but he ignored it by turning to his paperwork.
The day goes by quicker than he likes and the Doctor doesn't catch a glimpse of Gun at all. He does receive a message stating that because of his victory and his injuries, they wouldn't be training for a while much to Daniel's relief.
In the afternoon when his lower back isn't in so much pain, he leaves the safety of his office to head to the gym. He wanted to see if the Burn Knuckles had come by after school and as he predicted they did, to his surprise Public was also there.
"I'm incredibly sorry for what my second in command did to your member. It was not Public's intention to hurt him so badly or humiliate him in such a way. I have reprimanded my men and I promise that something similar will never happen again. I understand that our apology means little but If there is any other way we can apologise then please let me know." Hudson states, Jacky and Channing beside him.
Whilst Jacky and Hudson had given humble bows to showcase their apology, Channing still looked a little peeved but was also forced to bow as well after Hudson hisses at him to.
Vasco and Jace were silent as they watched the trio apologise, several other Burn Knuckle members weren't as quiet.
"You think this apology is enough after what Jace went through?"
"Take your sorry excuse of an apology back to Ansan and stay there!"
"This is pathetic, do you even feel any guilt or are you doing this because you lost to the Doctor?!"
"Enough" Vasco didn't shout but his voice commanded respect. Silence befalls the crowd.
Vasco approaches Channing, and even as Jace paws at his shoulder to get him to stop the larger man doesn't listen. Instead, he narrows his gaze and comes to stand in front of the tattooed member, chest puffed as he glares.
Without any warning, Vasco sends a punch straight to Channing's face. Several Burn Knuckle members let out cheers whereas Jace cries out in surprise. Hudson and Jacky stood still in their spots, jaws clenched shut as they watched their member and friend, who had tumbled a few metres back, struggle to get back up from the one hit.
Channing gasps, rubbing his bruised and probably swelling face as he stares at Vasco's pissed-off face. The Public member doesn't resort to cursing or start yelling insults at Vasco, he had enough restraint to know that he deserved the hit after everything he did.
"What are the values of your crew? Do you have a purpose?" Vasco who was still simmering in fury asks suddenly, the question isn't directed at any one person but even so, it's Hudson who answers.
"Ansan Public was founded by Taesoo Ma, our values and purpose used to be the belief in one's strength. It was the faith we had in ourselves" Hudson states firmly but after gazing at Jace, he sees the line of blue that peeks out from under his crew uniform. "I see now that our views have strayed but intend to guide us back. Public is my family and I should have done better to preserve it than watch it turn into something ugly" He speaks clearly, walking forward so that he stands in front of Channing's collapsed form.
Jacky, who had moved to help Channing off the floor, looked about close to tears, his lips trembling as he stared at his leader whereas Channing looked conflicted. His fists were clenched as he watched his leader, his friend speak on his behalf for the shame he had caused them.
"Damn it, Hudson, if you put it like that then how the hell am I supposed to remain stubborn?" Channing calls out before walking forward and pulling the blonde back. Vasco goes tense and others get ready for a fight, what they weren't prepared for was Channing bowing lowly.
"Alright, I'm sorry! I went too far during my fight and caused unnecessary pain. I did something stupid because of my ego and ended up hurting your friend…like Hudson said there isn't much my apology can do but if you want I can pay for the laser removal of the marks I left. If I had known that it would bring my crew so much pain and shame then I wouldn't have done it. Again, I'm sorry" He announces much to most people's shock.
It wasn't Vasco who replied to the apology, it was Jace who stepped forward.
"I won't say that what you did to me was right because it wasn't and I certainly won't forget it either. But I accept your apology" Jace sighs.
"Jace…" A couple of voices call but the big-eared vice remains strong.
"I'll also accept the offer to get this lasered off, the blue kind of ruins my whole aesthetic, don't you think?" Jace attempts to lessen the tension in the air and it somewhat works since a couple of people chuckle at his words. Even Channing stands back up straight to give his own awkward grin.
"Hudson Ahn" Vasco calls and the blonde leader turns back, changing his gaze from his friend to the other leader. "As leaders we hold the burden of our group. Our crews may change and evolve but as long as your values remain true then nothing else should matter. Thank you for settling this matter with us, Burn Knuckles won't forget your words" And as a show of camaraderie, he holds out a hand.
Hudson only stares at it for a moment before grasping it in return. Relief floods through the air and once they let go both Channing and Jacky pounce on their leader. Hugging his side and patting his shoulder as Vasco and the other Burn Knuckle members stare in amusement. Hudson continued to tolerate his two friends and their dramatics before he looked up, his eyes going past the crews and to the doors to see a smiling Daniel.
"Doctor" He gasps out before he can stop himself and heads turn.
Seeing as his cover was blown he walks into the room.
"I'm glad to see you guys getting along" Daniel states simply, smiling at the two groups when all of a sudden Vasco is running forward and the Doctor is being lifted into the air and a firm hug.
"Doctor Park! Thank you!" Vasco shouts. "Although you didn't need to do what you did and it was foolish since Jace and I hadn't asked you for help, we appreciate what you did. You truly are a kind person!" With every word, the hugging gets tighter and tighter until eventually, Daniel lets out a pained whimper.
Instantly Vasco let go, leaving Daniel to fall straight onto the floor and on his already ruined butt. He let out a yelp before groaning in pain.
"Doctor Park! Are you alright!" Jace calls as he rushes over to inspect the man before turning to berate his boyfriend. "Vasco you should know to hold back your strength at this point" He lectures as Vasco looks panicked.
"Doctor Park? Daniel? Are you alright?" He asks, tears welling up in the gang leader's eyes.
"I-I'm alright, just sore" Daniel grits out, holding his aching lower back before trying to smile at the other. "It's alright Vasco, and thank you for the words" He hums out.
Jace had reached out to offer a steady hand and Daniel accepted, slowly pulling himself upright and trying not to aggravate his injuries any further.
"You don't look alright" Vasco observes, brows furrowed even further as he assesses the other.
"You look like you're in worse condition than me" Hudson voices out, stepping closer to the Doctor and some grow wary of the two opponents seeing each other again.
"Yes well, I don't often get into fights believe it or not. Perhaps that's why my body aches so much" Daniel responded to the Sun of Ansan taking note of his genuine concern and regret. "Furthermore, I was attacked by a monster last night so it's not entirely your fault" He adds with a smile.
"A monster?!" People shout in both shock and confusion.
"Yeah, the one that terrorises the medical rooms in the middle of the night. The one that has a face that can scare both children and grown adults" He teases much to the confusion of many individuals.
"I-Is there really a monster?" Vasco asks, eyes wide and believing everything that is coming out of the Doctor's mouth.
"Don't worry Vasco, I was able to take it down. After all, I can't have a monster harming any of my patients" He grins, flexing one arm to show off his strength and muscles in a joking manner.
"You are super duper amazing, Doc" Vasco gasps, real tears shining in his eyes.
Despite Vasco's ignorance and naivety, the others were not so easily confused but didn't mention anything about the monster.
Daniel reaches out to pat Hudson's shoulder, smiling up at the man with an endearing expression.
"And nice work on making good on your promise, you are a man of your word" He states which causes Hudson's mouth to drop open only ever so slightly before he turns away and buries the lower half of his face into his palm.
"It's just how I am" Hudson's reply was muffled and Daniel took notice that his ears were red.
"Alright, I've disturbed you all enough. I only wanted to come down here to see who would be using the gym today and also to let you all know that starting from this Friday onwards the CC will be opening up the mess hall and turning it into a cafeteria. I'm pretty sure that the Founders are making membership exclusive, meaning that by default all employees of the CC will be allowed to eat there for a small charge when the building is open for fight nights" He advertises.
"Wait really? Food?" Vasco gapes.
"They're charging us? Don't they make enough money?" Jace huffs.
"It's only a small fee, it took a lot to convince them, especially James, to invest in something like this but I figured in the long run it would benefit you guys the most. The CC goes on for hours on end and even though it's during the night I'm sure most of you get hungry, it wouldn't do the fighters or any other employees such as the volunteers, the security team or even the cleaners to get hungry whilst on the job. I just want you guys to be healthy and maintain yourselves well which is why the food suppliers and employees that are going to be running the kitchen are people that I've checked out myself. Honestly, all the work I did in regards to the cafeteria is way above my pay grade" Daniel sighed but he was honest with his words.
Yes, he wanted the people to get along and get rid of the animosity that some crews may have with each other by providing them the shared yet safe space but he wouldn't tell them that explicitly. At least not yet.
"Doctor…" Daniel was suddenly bombarded by adoring looks from everyone across the room.
"You do care about us!" Vasco sobs before stepping forward to hug him again.
"Ow! Vasco… VASCO! Let me go!" Daniel cries but he doesn't listen and Jace doesn't stop him, instead, he and the other Burn Knuckle members join in as well. Hudson holds back a laugh as he watches the scene but his eyes don't leave the Doctor's figure.
Jacky and Channing turn to look at each other, Jacky shrugging as Channing pinches the bridge of his nose.
"They're all smitten" He grunts.
"Can you blame them?" Jacky questions.
.
.
.
"This is all your fault, my pain is all on you" Daniel grunts as he kicks Gun's ankle the instant the elder shows up at his office later on. Gun winces in slight pain and glares at the younger man in return.
"I'm pretty sure you didn't ask me to stop," Gun replies.
"You're mistaken, I'm pretty sure I did" Daniel retorts testily as he turns away and marches back to his desk. "Begged and cried and everything" He mumbles under his breath but despite his words, he knows that even he didn't mean it during the time.
As Daniel slumps back onto his chair he grunts at the pain that shoots through his back before covering up his expression and pretending to work.
"I know you're not working" Gun calls out and Daniel ignores him. "There can't possibly be that many things that the medical practitioner has to do especially on a weekday at the CC" Gun reasons and still Daniel ignores him.
There was a sigh but the Doctor paid it no mind, scribbling something down on a note. Suddenly there was a grunt and Daniel turned only for his cheek to meet something cold.
"AGH! What the hell, Gun?!" Daniel shouts as Gun snorts in amusement.
"Here, Icy pole. Take it as a peace treaty because apparently, you have something against me" Gun mentions as he tosses the item at the Doctor who catches it effortlessly. Bewildered by the random gift, Daniel huffs before unwrapping it.
"You're still not forgiven" He mentions but starts eating.
"You're not actually mad at me about the pain, are you? Listen after a couple more times of doing it you'll be an expert and there won't be any more pain" Gun lectures and Daniel rolls his eyes.
"I know that but who's to say I want to do it with you again in the future?" Daniel replies and this gains Gun's full attention.
"And what exactly do you mean by that?" The tone of his voice had gone dark and his shoulders had grown tense.
"Just that the sex was rough and not exactly the type you want to lose your virginity to, also the fact that you just left in the morning without so much as a word" Daniel grumbles.
"I left a note and breakfast," Gun states before his face lights up. "Are you upset because I left in the morning?" He questions and Daniel feels his ears burn red.
"Absolutely not" Daniel fires back but the knowing grin on Gun's face held enough conviction to showcase that he knew the other was lying.
"You're totally the clingy type aren't you doc?" Gun teases. "I bet you'd love to cuddle after sex, I'm surprised you didn't try cozying up to me last night or was it you were too exhausted to move after I was done with you? Maybe next time I'll let you hug me and I'll tolerate it" He continued when suddenly something freezing was shoved down his throat.
"Shut UP!" Daniel shouts.
Spluttering and coughing, Gun pulled the object out of his mouth, staring at the icy pole that had him gagging before turning to stare at Daniel who had turned away.
The burst of anger and the violent act told Gun that he was pushing the doctor too far. Had it been anyone who shoved an icy pole down his throat he would have punched them into next week.
"You don't need to get prissy," Gun calls, his voice losing its teasing tone.
There wasn't an answer in return so Gun takes it upon himself to march over to face the Doctor's front. The words that were right on the tip of his lips die at the sight he sees. Instead of a furious or even an exasperated expression, Gun is baffled by the flushed look on his disciple's face. Daniel's lips were pursed, and his brows were furrowed but his skin was burning so brightly that the flush masked the entirety of the boy's cheeks and ears. This sends the elder's emotions sprawling. The words that were meant to admonish the younger man for his immaturity were gone, replaced with confusion and embarrassment.
"Oi, oi, oi, what the hell kind of face is that supposed to be?" Gun blurts out before he can stop himself.
"Nothing" Daniel snaps back, continuing to avert his gaze.
The air had turned awkward. The whole conversation had turned the atmosphere awkward. Seeing as he was the older and the more mature individual, it was up to Gun to change it. Coughing into his fist, Gun clears his throat.
"Listen, if it really does bother you then I'll…I'll figure something out" Gun grunts out although his voice was quiet, he didn't do conversations like this and Daniel clearly looked like he didn't want to address it. "Have you eaten?" He asks instead, changing the topic.
"Excuse me?" This prompts Daniel to finally look at him.
"I asked if you've eaten, it's dinner time now and I've noticed how holed up you get here at the CC, living off convenience store food and you'll probably be living off the cafeteria food once they finish setting up. It's not healthy and as your trainer, I should make sure you're being healthy" Gun informs and Daniel's confused look morphs into something softer.
"Are you asking me to dinner?" Daniel inquires.
Gun frowns.
"Are you coming?" He retorts.
"Are you paying?" Daniel fires back and there was the spitfire that Gun knew. Turning around and heading for the door, the only response the elder gives is an undignified grunt of neither confirmation nor denial.
It takes only a few seconds and a couple of steps before Gun can hear the sound of clattering as Daniel shakes off his white coat and replaces it with something warmer before he chases after Gun. The younger didn't latch onto his arm but he did sidle right up to Gun's side, their shoulders rubbing against each other just enough to share body heat.
"I'll take it as a yes" Daniel smiles and Gun rolls his eyes.
.
.
.
Dinner was a quiet affair, Gun decided to take the Doctor to one of his more regular spots to eat sushi. There weren't any complaints about the food choice but there were many praises once Seongjun brought out the first plate of orders.
"Have you been here before?" Daniel asks meekly, trying to make conversation with the other.
Gun preferred silence, he's always enjoyed the quietness the world had to offer unfortunately he was surrounded by a bunch of loud mouths that couldn't shut up even if they were paid to. Yet when it came to Daniel's insistent talking the elder found that he didn't mind it as much. His voice wasn't annoyingly grating like Goo's and the things he talked about weren't insufferable like James.
No, he talked about the little things. The small things that people like the Founders shouldn't care about. Where Gun saw violence, the need for control and fear, Daniel could see the brighter opportunities in life. When he saw someone in pain he was the first off his feet to check on them, Gun had a clear view of the medical set-up from where he sat in the VIP booth and observing how focused the Doctor took his role was something that hadn't been shown previously.
Other Doctors, nurses and medical practitioners either didn't have the time or the effort to care so wholly about a bunch of gangsters and delinquents. Daniel didn't see the employees of the CC as just a bunch of no-good, dirty individuals. He smiles, he laughs, he argues and charms anyone he talks to as if they were just regular people as if the fighters couldn't snap him in half if he said the wrong thing.
Gun also had to admit to himself. He couldn't care less about the people around him, he was greedy, power-hungry and mean. Daniel perhaps cared a bit too much and anyone could see it reflected through the actions he does.
"Gun?" Daniel voices again, snapping the elder out of his stupor.
"I'm a regular, Seongjun is probably one of the only reliable chefs I can trust that will provide the best quality sushi here in Seoul and probably all of Korea" Gun praises and Daniel's brows rise in shock.
"Those are some generous compliments from someone like you" The Doctor smiles.
"And what exactly do you mean by that?" Gun fires back.
"I've hardly heard a compliment come from you when we train" Daniel remarks.
"That's because half the time you complain like a little shit and the other half is you prancing around like a newborn deer" Gun huffs and Daniel puffs his cheeks in offence but he doesn't refute. Soon he's moving back to the original conversation.
"So…Do you like Japanese food? I personally much prefer Korean but that's because I'm biassed and my mothers a good cook" Gun overlooks the fact that Daniel was trying to interrogate him through small talk.
"I'm half Japanese on my dad's side. Growing up I travelled quite often back and forth between Japan and Korea so I got used to eating cuisine from both places" Gun informs. His ethnicity wasn't hidden knowledge, people knew that he was from the Yamazaki clan and a lot of the foreigners in the CC such as Ryohei and his men worshipped him for his name. Not that he could stand it sometimes, being a Yamazaki came with its disadvantages as well as its advantages.
"I see" Daniel muses as he stares at the other. "That must be pretty cool being able to experience the two different cultures. I'm sure you were able to eat a lot of delicious meals" He hums as he eats some of the sashimi that was in front of him.
"Perhaps, but I can't say that I experienced many home-cooked meals. I'm sure having a mother who loves and cooks for you is nice" Gun replies, eating as well.
The way Gun had spoken his statements, the lack of tone or emotion which wasn't uncommon for the other, only served to make Daniel feel worried.
"Your mother didn't cook for you?" And maybe Daniel shouldn't have posed the question in such a way but he had already blurted out the words and couldn't take it back. Luckily all Gun does is let out a huff.
"No," Gun replies. A complicated look passes over the man's face but it fades just as fast as it appears.
"I didn't mean to-" "Doesn't matter, I'm not offended" Gun holds up a hand to stop Daniel from speaking "Enough about families and parents, give me an update on life at the CC. Anything to complain about?"
And although it was a strange topic to segway into, Daniel didn't deny the opportunity. He talks, Gun listens and they eat.
The Doctor couldn't help but feel as if this was one of the most civil moments the two have had with each other since meeting. It was almost as if they were regular individuals with normal jobs rather than a Doctor or a fighting ring owner. It was…nice.
.
.
.
"Aunty, what do you think of the space?" Daniel asks as he enters the mess hall and heads straight to the kitchen where several dozen people are idling around and setting up the area. Either they were checking the appliances, storing items and ingredients away or starting to prep the food.
"It's big" Jihyeon Park, his mother's best friend remarks from her spot helping Bredak check the appliances.
Daniel's mother had ultimately decided she had too much to do at the main restaurant to come and manage another branch so Jihyeon had offered to do it in her stead. She had been working alongside Seonhui for years and therefore she trusted Jihyeon enough to manage the branch herself.
"How's it going with the setup? If there's any problems you can inform me and I'll pass it on to James" Daniel advises and the woman shakes her head.
"Everything has been checked and seems to be in order, we've started prepping the food for tonight so we should be prepared. I know you did say that there would be a lot of people coming in but seeing as it's the first day and opening up the mess hall hasn't been promoted much I can't help but feel like we might be over-preparing" Jihyeon sighs, concerned in her posture as she turns to Daniel.
"Well, I guess it would be better to be over-prepared than under," Daniel tells her and she nods.
"I still can't get over the fact that this is a fighting ring, it looks so lavish," She remarks as she admires the cleanliness and top-of-the-range appliances. "It's a shame that the room hasn't been used all that much until now" Jihyeon mentions and Daniel agrees with the sentiment.
"Well, at least now it will be, although if any fighters do come in today don't be intimidated by their stature or aura. Most are quite nice and they have been warned that if they misbehave or mistreat the new staff then they'll be suspended or worst-case scenario, banned" Daniel informs and she nods.
"That's good to hear," She states. "Anyways, shouldn't you be busy preparing for tonight, Mr Doctor? You don't have to stay here and waste your time. I've got things handled" Jihyeon reassures as she urges Daniel to leave.
The male lets out a soft chuckle and nods.
"I'll swing by later to see how it all goes, good luck Aunty!" He calls before walking out.
Preparations were going smoothly and after having a look at the fight list for nights and weekends it was safe for Daniel to assume it would be smooth sailing. Although whenever he thinks something along those lines everything usually goes wrong.
With the time and experience at the CC came about the undeniable truth that Daniel was getting better with his work and what he was doing. Thus, even though it was a Friday he had finished off his to-do list before the CC was even open to the public. He double, no, TRIPLE checked the medical tools and restocked anything that they were falling low on. He managed which volunteers would be coming in for the next three nights and who would be away to ensure that there were enough staff members around to help out.
He had talked to James about changing the title of volunteers to casual workers, seeing as the CC was beyond the need for charity work and could easily pay the people who worked for them. Furthermore, they had discussed about the workers getting licences for different medical situations seeing as they would be a part of Daniel's team of employees if they agreed to the causal status. Completing a CPR course, General first aid training and First aid for Anaphylaxis, were the more vital training they should complete.
Daniel has noted that there had been a general improvement in terms of how the volunteers operated and he summarised it down to them observing and listening to him when he orders them to move and work but it would be better for them to get official courses. There were already quite a few such as Mira who had completed their first aid training but the more there were the better.
James liked the idea and apparently, when he had mentioned it to Goo the blonde had also agreed to it. Gun on the other hand was indifferent when Daniel had told him, remarking that it didn't affect him so he didn't care. Which of course was the typical Gun attitude towards anything that he didn't care about.
Anyhow, Daniel was bored. And when he was bored he was left to his thoughts and when he was left to his thoughts he occasionally spiralled. Currently, he was sitting in his office, eating a sandwich that Jihyeon had been kind enough to make for him. He marvelled at his own efficiency nowadays compared to the start of his CC career when everything was either thrown at him at the last minute or he was left to work late into the night. Some nights he still did but now it was occupied with Gun.
Occupied by Gun training him of course. Nothing else.
Letting out a groan, Daniel buries his face onto the hard surface of the table. He had thought that just messing around with Gun those first couple of times had been mind-boggling enough but now after having gone the whole way he didn't know what else to think. His mind had been stuck in time with only the memories of Gun and himself during their heated moments that night. The sex had been great, it had been amazing even but Daniel still couldn't help but get embarrassed.
"I'm such an idiot" Daniel grumbles to himself, sulking in his spot as he lifts his head to chew on the corner of his sandwich. He knows and understands that what he and Gun had was only pleasure for both parties involved. They weren't dating, they weren't committed to each other yet he had still made a big deal about Gun leaving him alone in the morning. It was clingy and too unlike him. Gun was certainly bewildered by how Daniel had acted yet lucky for the Doctor the elder had breezed past it like it was nothing.
"What the hell is wrong with me?" Daniel grunts. "Just because that guy gave me the best experience of my life doesn't mean he owes me anything, besides I'm sure all sex is great sex like that" He mutters to himself.
Yet the expression Gun had made, the surprise along with his flushed appearance was an image stuck in Daniel's mind. It was almost…cute.
Slamming his face into the table, Daniel lets out a scream. Why couldn't he stop thinking about Gun as cute? It was getting ridiculous at this point! He was a large, burly man with muscles on top of muscles. He was tall, intimidating, had anger issues and most definitely had a swearing issue. He smokes, has tattoos and scars, drinks plenty of alcohol probably and barely smiles unless it comes to fighting. How could any of that be cute?
Yet with that rhetorical question, his brain provides its own unwanted answers.
The way Gun always took the time to meticulously stretch his muscles and body before their training sessions and made sure Daniel did it too. The way Gun always seemed mindful of Daniel's needs whenever they initiated anything sexual, he was always quick to put his own pleasure behind the Doctors. The soft edge is reserved only for the ajummas at local restaurants they go to. How whenever he's excited and breaks out into his demonic yet toothy grin his little canines are always on display. The way he seems to listen to everything that Daniel has to say even when he pretends he's not paying attention.
"No way, there's no way in hell" Daniel mutters to himself as he shakes his head.
There was only one explanation as to why Daniel was able to come up with these observations the second he posed himself the internal question. It was an answer that he utterly despised yet it was the only option he had.
Memories of Daniel talking to his mother about Gun. The amount of time the two had been spending together. How Daniel didn't care when people like Samuel, Jake, Olly, Hudson or Jay were touching him but the minute Gun does so he feels as if he's been burnt.
"Holy shit" Daniel gasps as a hand flies up straight to his mouth. "This is absolutely messed up"
Daniel Park was crushing on Jong Gun Park.
.
.
.
Daniel Park struggled to not maim himself during the rest of the night by accident. After his revelation, he felt lost, conflicted and confused.
There was absolutely no way he could be crushing on his employer. Ethically it was wrong, if there was an HR department they'd be having a field day. Scrap that, even before the crush part just the messing around and having sex part was already morally wrong. Moreover, they were completely different people, different personalities, different attitudes and approaches to life. Daniel liked helping people whereas Gun liked kicking them down.
Opposites attract.
"Dr Park, are you alright?" Mira asks when she notices the Doctor snapping the pen in his hand.
He hated his traitorous mind.
"Hmm? Oh yes, I'm fine" Daniel turns to her, smiling brightly before throwing the pen away and accepting the wipes from Jay to clean the ink off his hands.
Jay and Mira turn to look at each other questioningly, especially when they notice Daniel fisting the wipes in his hands aggressively despite the placating smile on his lips.
They had been spending too much time together. Daniel doesn't hang out with other people often, even with his new influx of friends and acquaintances in the CC he rarely goes out. Gun who was always present to train, Gun who would occasionally pop up around lunch and ask him to come along, Gun who is the only one who takes care of his sexual needs. It was the attention and constantly being around each other, that's the reason Daniel found him to be so endearing, it wasn't a crush. That's what Daniel attempts to conclude.
Forced proximity. Yeah, that was it.
Even if Daniel did in fact have a small crush on Gun it was merely that. A small, insignificant, fleeting thing. He'd get over it the moment Gun pisses him off again.
Right?
"Uh, Doctor…you're hurting the patient" Mira calls as Jay frantically reaches out to grab Daniel's hand, startling him out of his thoughts. Blinking, Daniel looked down to see that he had been strangling the poor fighter's arm with bandages.
"Oh my God, I'm so sorry" Daniel's quick to apologise. "I'm not in the right mind today" He excuses and the fighter waves him off with a simple yet pained smile. The Doctor is quick to finish up and sends the man on his merry way.
"Daniel, are you sure you're okay? We've never seen you this distracted before, even during the night when you had arranged that fight with Hudson Ahn" Mira remarks, this time she's frowning deeply.
Jay nods along, his mouth set into a stiff line as he awaits Daniel's response.
Mentally he wanted to confess that he was going crazy for crushing on someone as psychotic as Gun. But in reality, he just sighs.
"Just tired," He tells them. "I was busy helping the kitchen staff for the opening of the mess hall today so that must be why" It wasn't a lie, he had helped but not enough to have exerted his strength.
"Oh yeah, that's a cafeteria open for employees now, right?" Mira brightens and Daniel nods.
"Be sure to grab something to eat before you head home for the night. I promise you it's great food" Daniel promotes loud enough for the other volunteers to hear.
Jay and Mira leave the situation as it is and Daniel goes back to work. One incident of almost harming a patient was enough, he needed to focus and so he did. The night flies by and only once does his thoughts turn to Gun before he snaps back to the present. He was also rather proud to not only restrain his thoughts about the Founder but also prevent his eyes from trailing up to the VIP section. He didn't need to be caught staring longingly at the man.
"Alright, that's it for the night, like I said you should all clean up, and grab something to eat before heading home. Good work tonight!" Daniel calls out and the group returns the words.
Jay gestures if Daniel wants to go and eat as well but the Doctor merely shakes his head.
"Not yet, I have to hand these files to James. You should go grab something to eat though, don't let me keep you waiting" He smiles kindly at the blonde and Jay smiles, patting his shoulder comfortably before leaving.
Daniel heads to the VIP booth, determined to catch James before he officially leaves for the night and disappears with the rest of the dispersing CC crowds. He'd hand the files to the Founder and dip just fast enough to slip by Gun if he was still around. Feeling confident about his plan he climbs the stairs and steadily walks through the hallways until he reaches the VIP entrance.
Yet before he could even knock to make his presence known the door opened.
Daniel's heart startles at the sight of Gun. The one man he didn't want to see tonight was right in front of him because, of course, fate hated him.
"Gun" Daniel squeaks as the Founder looks down in amusement at the reaction.
"Have you always been this easy to startle or am I just that scary?" Gun grins before clutching his chest in offence. "I'd have thought you were used to me at this point" He teases.
Gun is a handsome man. Scars or not. Of course, that wasn't what he told the other.
"No amount of time will ever allow me to get used to your ugly mug" Daniel retorts easily, Gun frowns before scoffing and internally Daniel facepalms. There was no way for Daniel to even seduce anyone with a line as insulting as that one. Had Gun been a woman, he might have been slapped.
"So, what brings you up here?" Gun asks curiously. "Surely you're not here to see me, are you? Miss me that much?" Gun continues to tease and Daniel flushes.
"It was the complete opposite" He mumbles before holding up his files. "I'm here to give these to James" He gestures and Gun observes the item before nodding yet still not moving out the way, as if expecting Daniel to say something else.
The two stare awkwardly at each other, the conversation having died. Daniel couldn't stop his eyes from flickering from the files to Gun's face before slowly gliding down the man's body before reaching the floor. Real subtle.
Feeling something similar to confidence build up, Daniel decides to shoot his shot. Right then. Right there.
"Um…Gun?" Daniel voices aloud and Gun seems to snap out of whatever thought process he was going through.
"Yes?"
"You remember how a while back you asked if I wanted to go and watch that new horror movie with you? Well I'm free this week and I was just wondering if you were still down to go sometime…unless you've already gone to see it" Daniel asks, hesitance building up at the end.
There was a sharp intake of breath.
"I haven't seen it yet" Gun admits, which makes Daniel lift his head to meet the older man's gaze, hope growing in his heart at the words only to falter when he notices the man's expression. "But I can't, I'm busy all week with chauffeuring and guarding the princess" He informs and Daniel internally sinks.
"Are you talking about me?" A new voice calls as the door opens wider to reveal a breathtakingly beautiful woman. Although it wasn't her beauty that made Daniel's mouth drop open slightly, it was her closeness with Gun that did. As she approaches the doorway where Gun stood she naturally hooks an arm around the Founders own. The contact makes Daniel stare.
If fate hated him then reality absolutely loathes him.
"Oh! You must be the Miracle Doctor! Daniel Park! I've only ever seen you through the CC streams but it's nice to finally see the real deal in person" The woman remarks with a bright smile, one that shines so brightly that it even makes Daniel, a gay man, almost swoon.
"Um…" Daniel was at a loss as to what to say to the female. She was stunning and her words were kind but she was currently stabbing him in the chest with a metaphorical knife with the way she was holding onto Gun's arm and side.
"Oh, I'm Crystal Choi! Jong Gun's employer" Crystal introduces, extending a hand for Daniel to shake and mindlessly he does.
"Technically your father is my employer" Gun hums.
"And yet you're always around me. Is that by choice because you prefer being with me to my father?" Crystal teases and Gun grunts out a sound.
Daniel wanted to throw himself off the highway and straight into a high-speed semi.
Of course, there was no way Gun could ever be interested in him romantically. Gun was the one who made the boundaries clear both at the start of their 'relationship' but also multiple times throughout. It was stress relief, a mutual, no-feelings-attached benefit that the two enjoyed. Gun who was perfect in every other way (except emotionally and perhaps morally) would of course have high standards and the woman, Crystal, obviously fit them.
Two people who looked stunning together, both tall, rich and gorgeous. Compared to Daniel who had been a poor nobody not even a decade ago. Who leeched off his uncle's money and status. Who wasn't even good enough to be a decent Doctor.
The way Gun started bickering softly with Crystal, their voices drowning out Daniel's presence even though he was standing right in front of them.
'What have I told you about calling me that nickname, in no way am I a princess'
'Whatever you say, princess'
'We should get going, I have to wake up early tomorrow and you'll be driving me around'
'At this point, I'm just your driver, not even a bodyguard'
'You barely need to lift a finger to scare people off'
Daniel feels his chest tighten. It didn't feel like he could breathe anymore, it hurt too much to move or to even say anything.
Memories of the hickeys that were left on Gun's neck by someone other than Daniel. Was it Crystal? Was Gun also sleeping with his employer's daughter? It seemed morally grey enough to turn a person like Gun on if he enjoyed getting it down and dirty with his own employees.
"Daniel, are you alright?" A voice calls out and suddenly the white noise that had apparently filled his senses evaporates. Their eyes were on him and Daniel squirmed in his spot.
"Yeah, I just needed to give these files to you" Daniel breathes out slowly, holding out the files in the redhead's general direction, judging by where his voice was coming from. He sucks in another breath before lifting his head to meet James' concerned gaze, Goo who stood next to him was also sceptical of what he was seeing.
"Ah, thank you" James nods and both Gun and Crystal step out of the way so the other Founder can accept the item. They were still locked together even as they moved. Daniel was going to throw up.
"Are you sure you're alright, Doctor? You look quite pale" James remarks, brows furrowed.
"I'm alright, I think I've just been overexerting myself recently" Daniel replies.
"That's no good, the CC needs its Doctor!" Goo squawks out.
Daniel lets out an awkward chuckle that is devoided of any emotion.
"A good night's sleep should do me well" Daniel states before smiling at the group weakly.
"Then you should go and rest, the fights are over for tonight so you shouldn't be doing anything too strenuous" Gun adds his own opinion and Daniel internally cringes.
"I was hoping to swing by the mess hall for a small meal before heading off for the night, that being said I should get going. I'll see you guys around" Daniel spoke quickly as he gave them all a passing once over gaze. "It was nice meeting you Miss Choi" Daniel swallowed hard when his eyes fell on Crystal who had tilted her head to the side in confusion.
"Please, call me Crystal," She added before Daniel could leave.
The Doctor nods stiffly before turning right around and marching back the way he came, his coat flourishing with the movement before he walks away.
How could Daniel have been so dumb? There was no chance in hell that Gun and he would amount to anything more than just fuck buddies. That was made clear now. The scenarios his mind had been making up for the last several hours, the delusions he was feeding himself. It was laughable.
Heading down to the mess hall for food he was quick to arrive and even faster to grab something to eat and sit. There weren't many people present, most of the volunteers were gone by the time he arrived and the fighters who may have shown up were long gone. There were a few familiar faces here and there but the person Daniel sat with is Jay who had waved him over with a smile and had saved him a seat.
His gentle smile morphed into one of deep uneasiness once he noticed Daniel's changed demeanour. He doesn't say anything about it, not that he ever does say anything, but he doesn't make Daniel talk about his worries. He just places another item of food onto Daniel's tray and insists he eats.
Daniel accepts the food and takes the piece of bread, lifting it to his mouth he bites into it. It was good food, it tasted divine yet despite that he couldn't stop his resolve from crumbling.
There in the mess hall. Surrounded by several dozen other people who were minding their own business, with Jay sitting at his side with a look that was akin to horror, Daniel could feel the hot tears silently escaping his eyes.
Trying not to make a big deal out of the reaction, Jay inspects Daniel's body for injuries before looking around for someone else to notice. Nobody does, surprisingly enough. Or even unsurprisingly enough, Daniel remembers a time when he was nothing more than an invisible spec of dust when he was in a room filled with other people. Those days may have been years ago; it didn't mean the Doctor didn't remember it.
Jay turns back to Daniel and grabs a few of his napkins to pass to the silently weeping and distressed individual.
"Jay…" Daniel hiccups out and the blonde freezes, waiting to hear the Doctor's words. "I'm such an idiot," He says as if it explained everything.
Despite Jay's shaking head and denial of the statement, Daniel couldn't help but feel that it was the most truthful statement he had ever uttered.
In one single instant, Daniel's first schoolboy crush had ultimately been demolished before it could even flourish.
Daniel continues crying and Jay continues to panic.
Neither noticed the pair of eyes that were watching them silently.
