Chapter 100: Echoes of Night (2)
"Incredible!" Felix said sincerely. "I thought he just had some amazing fire elemental skills, but now I see he's truly versatile!"
"Yeah, me too. We misunderstood him," Luthor added.
But Ryuzen's triumph was short-lived.
ROAAAR!
Three more Hollowfied Giants charged forward, their thunderous steps shaking the stone floor. Their dark eyes glowed with unholy rage.
The closest one smashed through a wall to make space, while another hurled a boulder-like piece of debris straight at Ryuzen.
Boom!
He twisted midair, narrowly avoiding the projectile, but the shockwave knocked him off balance. He flipped and landed with a skid across the ground, his boots grinding against stone.
"Everyone, get ready!" Luthor suddenly shouted.
The others were already moving.
Felix drew a curved dagger and dashed forward, crimson lines glowing under his skin. "Blood Burn—Activate!"
His speed exploded. In a blur, he was already beneath one giant, slashing at its Achilles tendon. Dark ichor sprayed out, and the beast stumbled.
Then he raised both arms. "Blood Arrow!"
A searing arrow made of condensed energy shot from his fingertips, piercing the chest of another Hollowfied Giant. It shrieked and thrashed as flames erupted from the wound.
Luthor charged in next, swinging his heavy greatsword. His muscles bulged with power as he crashed into a giant's shin, cutting deep. "Take this, you oversized freak!"
Irina created multiple doppelgängers to distract the enemies, weaving illusions that confused and split their attention.
Meanwhile, Venus rushed ahead to Ryuzen's side, striking with relentless punches. Each blow sent ripples through the giant's body, eventually blasting its form into smithereens.
Rudos remained in the back. His eyes cold and unreadable, he lifted his staff and muttered, "Regeneration Aura."
Immediately, a pulse of healing energy spread across the group, restoring stamina and soothing their injuries with dark efficiency.
"Grrrrr..."
Suddenly, black tendrils erupted from beneath one of the giants—and lashed toward Ryuzen.
[ Warning! Vitality Drain Detected! ]
As soon as one of the tendrils coiled around Ryuzen's feet, Dracina's alarm rang out in his mind.
He couldn't react fast enough. Because he was already locked in a brutal clash with a charging giant, holding back its massive trunk-like arm.
"Not good... It's draining my stamina too quickly. If I don't get that off soon, my stamina would be completely drained away..."
But shifting focus now would mean a crushed skull.
These Hollowfied Giants were no ordinary monsters. Each was at least Level 25, their raw physical strength bordering on monstrous.
Just as the tendril began to tighten, a blur shot past him.
Crack!
Venus slammed her fist down, shattering the tendril with a ruthless blow.
"Are you okay, Ryu?" she asked, her voice laced with concern.
He gave her a quick nod, grateful for the hand.
"Yes, I'm fine… but you should fall back now."
His tone held urgency. Not just to Venus, but to everyone.
They caught the shift in his breathing.
He inhaled long. And the air around him shimmered with rising heat. Fire began to swirl inside his open mouth, licking out between his teeth like a living inferno.
They all stepped back instinctively, recognizing the signs.
Ryuzen was about to unleash his devastating Fire Breath—and they knew better than to be caught in its way.
Ryuzen's chest expanded as flames erupted upward from the depths of his core. His pupils turned into thin golden slits, and a faint draconic growl rumbled from his throat.
The Hollowfied Giants didn't stop. One leapt toward him, tree trunk raised high to crush him.
Too late.
"Fire Breath."
BOOOOM!!!
A blazing torrent of golden fire erupted from Ryuzen's mouth, like a sun vomiting its fury onto the world.
The blast engulfed the charging giant in an instant. Its body was consumed by the flames, the air distorting from the sheer heat. Flesh bubbled. Armor cracked. Bones turned brittle and black.
The pressure wave blew the other giants back, flames licking their limbs and searing their skin.
Even the ground beneath the breath turned red-hot, scorched into molten cracks.
The party shielded their faces, bracing against the shockwave. Despite stepping back, the heat still kissed their skin, reminding them of the devastating power packed within that draconic frame.
When the fire finally died down, only a pile of smoldering ash remained where the giant had stood.
Rudos blinked, stunned. "That… that wasn't just a breath. That was a damn explosion."
Irina's ruby eyes sparkled. "Amazing!"
Felix grinned wide. "Monster. He's a walking flamethrower."
Ryuzen wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, steam rising from his lips. "Tch… that took more energy than I thought."
The others regrouped around him, the battlefield now littered with the wounded, burning bodies of the Hollowfied.
But the rumbling hadn't stopped.
From the far end of the ruined corridor… heavier steps approached.
Ryu narrowed his eyes. "Something bigger is coming."
"Not just one," Luthor added, peering through the cracked window. "There's a lot of them… at least a hundred."
Irina's expression tightened. "But why did they suddenly attack us like this?"
Ryuzen stepped forward, eyes still glowing faintly from the fire he had unleashed. "Someone intelligent might be behind this. These monsters… they're not moving randomly. They knew we were here. This was an planned ambush."
Irina nodded, her unease growing. "That's what I am afraid of."
Luthor's jaw clenched. "Then it's likely we've already been discovered long ago. Someone's must be watching us. They are pulling the strings. And if that's the case… we shouldn't stay here any longer."
"If stronger Hollows show up, we're as good as dead," he added grimly.
"Aye aye, Captain," Rudos said from the back with a smirk, saluting lazily. He remained calm, unbothered, as if this level of danger was routine for him.
The corridor trembled again, louder this time.
BANG! CRASH!
Suddenly a section of the building exploded outward as something massive tore through the wall. Shards of stone and steel flew in every direction. A monstrous claw, long and serrated like a blade, slid into view—razor-sharp and capable of slicing through reinforced metal like paper.
Then a head emerged, dark and scaly, with glowing crimson eyes filled with primal fury.
"ROOAARRR!"
It unleashed a deafening draconic roar, shaking the walls and making even the bravest among them flinch. The force of the sound pressed down on their chests like a storm, rattling the bones beneath their skin.
Irina stumbled back. "What… what is this thing?"
